JASPER:' FRIDAY, : : JUNK IG, 1893. Knteredai thtl'oMomceat Jper Itidlina, fortun. a.Uon tliroiiKh the mall & ecoua-clas nutterl CTTlietown trustees of Jasper ou " ivjti-iou an vi lliu LUIS tor tho electric light plants, being satisflßll linnn PVamiiialmti thai ai- - 'uiiunuu tum 1IUI1U Cli them compiled with the requirements ol tho statutos under which bids wore asked for-tho bids all requiring naymoot in 30 days after completion,! while no la.v reserves a cortaia proportion for JO days, in ordor that tho plant may bo thoroughly testod. Thoro was also other minor defects iu each of tho bids. Uad thero uot been tho Hoard would havo contracted with ono ot tho bidders, Vut these dofects prevented. Tho petition for the plant is yet bofore the Board and they should re-advertise for new bids. Two-thirds of tho citizens of Jasper are iu favor of any public improve-ments-an electric light plant included -and aro willing to pay for it. If the Board has any aoubt of this let them call a mass mooting any uight, and take the votes of citizens upon it. This Would nccossitato no outlay of money, and would readily determlue the matter to the satis. action of all reasonable persons. Jasper has no "bosses," to dictate what tho people must do, We are all ou a political equality, from tho poorest to tho richost, irom the most ignorant to the most learned, from tho stupid hoarder of bis woalth, who is afraid of payiug out a nickel without ho is sure a dime Is comiug back for it, to tho lavish squanderer of hi wages. All alike aro entitled to tho sarno voice and inlluence as to what shall bo duno by tho public authorities. Tho towu board should not assume tho position of "bosses of the people, but rather carry out their requests when proporly made known. The wish for au electric light hag been madekn .wu to them by a large majority of all the v ters. If they supposo there has beeu a change of sentiment since that petition was presented let them hold an e lection on it some night, and they can easily lind nut. Don t bo afraid of the People! UCrTlio Comrnencemont exercises of the Publ.c School last week iu Jasper was largely attended, tho speeches and music were highly appreciated by all, particularly tho lino instrumental music rendered by the Ourlauf trio. Those Durlaut boys would be hard to beat anywhere. The entire exercises rcllectgreat credit on tho scholars and Principal of the School, Mr. T. K. Dougherty, and to Miss Miuola Friedman, who exerted herself iu training the vocal class. OCrAnent the electric light question tho Couhier has no question but the bids were wrongfully hidden by some ono to prevent tho public from seeing them. The cditoi spent several hours looking for ttem in vain. They were public documents, under tho law open to inspection, and the only proper place for them was among tho town Clerk's records-but they were uot there, and no ono was permitted to see them, not even a member of Board ! until an illegal Sunday night caucus had determined what actiou should be taken!
