'Liphlet had not an enemy in the village. Every ouo liked him. But there was ono roung neighbor who used to try now and then toteaso him a little. This wax a young man from 'daown b'low," who spent his sum mers in tho little village with an old j aunt and employed his timo in sketching all tho picturesque spots in the viciuitv. He often said to 'Liph- 1 lot. I "Now, it stands to reason, Mr. Cowdry, you'll forget something eotne 1 time, and I'm going to seo if I can't , catch you at it." ' "Try 'f yer like," Eaid tho carpen-, tor, with a good natured laugh, and evidently with uo fear of tho re&ult of the trial. Ouo day the young man hailed 'Liphlet as ho was starting off for a day's job in a neighboring town and naked him if ho would inako a certain purchaso for him, as ho could not get the desired article in tho village. There is a story of a Parisian woman who was a noted beauty and lelle. She was happily married, enormously wealthy, envied and worship, hut oue day at the height of her tri umph she committed suicide. Ami the r eason for her mad, inciimpivhcusible act. as discovered from a note she left, was that she had found a wrinkle on her peerless face, a gray lock in bur soft hair, and ! so she perl'orred to die rather than to benmiu old und ugly. Of courso the senselessness and absurdity of her act completely forces aside any pity Tor the woman, but there is a pathos about it alter all. Every woman has that feeling iu a degree, but in her it was intensified. -Chicago News. MAKINQ A TELFORD ROAD.

J:ujortunt Valuta to He Olicrvol In Snh I imvemont ml Toj Course. 1 Tho system of Thomas Telford, whoso ' tmuo has been used to designate the kind ' i'f roatl which ho advocated, differs from Iho rdiiaidam system iu many parlicu- , lars, tho most imiwrtnnt of which proscribes tho usoof u Bubpavcmcnt of largo stonea sot in courses upon tho earth foundation. In tho interstices between , tho larger stones should bo carofnlly and thoroughly wedged and packed with smaller stones, as it insures tho solidity 1 of tho snbpavomont and serves to prej vent tho dropping or settlins of tho m.tI torials that nro subsequently put on. When finished, tho suhpaveuient should 1 present a geucral uniformity of outllno ! with a rough surfneo caused by tho uni even edges of tho pavement stones a ! roughness which serves to prevent tho 1 sliil ting nnd sloping of tho smaller stones abovo and to insure tho compact binding 1 together of tho entiro structure. ' Iu tho making of n telford road it is I important to remember that tho stones 1 used in tho snhpavcnieut need not bo selected with regard to their hardues3,nnd that- stones may bo used in this part of tho work which would bo wholly nnimited to situations whoro thoy might bo exposed to direct contact with heavy vehicles. Another practical point to bo remembered in tho laying of tho sul-pav-tnent is that tho driving and wedg ing of chips and smaller etone3 into the mterstlct s of the subpavexnent must not bo permitted near tho face of tho nnnn isho'l werk, ns this practico would result in the loosening and forcing apart of tho larg'-r stones of tho suupavement. After tho completion of tho subpavement at least two feparato lnvcrs of broken stono are generally put on to form the upper and finishing; course of tho roadway. Tho interniedintoconrso nest to tho snbpavemout is mado of broken htonca somewhat after tho mannor of macadam material, although theso need uot bo, nnd in practical work generally are not, of tho samo uniform sizo n:ul quality as are required for the finishing layer. The stones used in tho intermediate conrso may vary iu sine from 1 inch to 3 inches in their largest diameter, and this courso should bo at least 4 inches thick, free from dirt, nnd lnid in a bed of uniform thickness to preservo tho regular contour of tho roadway. In putting down this courso tho heavy roller should again bo employed to compact and consolidate tho stones, so that tho repeated passing of tho roller over its surfaco will produco no settling, hollows or uneven places. Before completing the rolling a quantity of clean, sharp fand should bo laid on tho surfaco of the intermediate courso, evenly nnd in sufficient amount, and over this tho roller should bo passed repeatedly, after having first sprinkled tho sand with a sufficient quantity of water to prevent its sticking to tho surfaco of tho roller. Tho top or surface course is the finishing work in tho building of a telford road, and iu the making of this coue great care must bo had both in selecting the material to ho used and in the method of laying it down. All tho stones of this courso bhouhl bo of uniform size, and nil stones should bo rejected from this material which aro too largo to pass through a ring having an inner diameter of two inches. If trap rock can bo obtained for this course, it can bo used with tho assurance that a better material is scarcely obtainable, but if trap rock cannot lie had thero aro several varieties of hard granito ond limestono which make excellent substitutes nnd which aro frequently used with success. Tho top or surfaco courso should Im? laid with a uniform depth of not less than il inches, and after being compactly rolled it should show n thickness of at least 3 inches abovo tho intermediate conrso. After tho looso stones for tho top courso havo been evenly laid over tho surface of tho intermediate courso, eo as to show tho form of tho completed roadway, tho roller should bo run over tho now surfaco just enough to render it moderately compact, and for this purpose a light roller will bo sufficient. Thon a light coat of clean, sharp sand should bo put on and sprinkled as in tho case of tho intermediate course, after which, by tho uso of splint brooms, tho sand may bo worked iu between tho 6tones of tho surface, whilo tho heavy roller h mado to follow, pressing tho email stones firmly into a compact mass. Tho rolling should proceed backward nnd forward in lino with tho direction of tho road, lioginnbig at tho sido or gutter of tho roadway nnd working toward the center. Tho process of rolling and add ing inuist sand should continuo until each stone becomes so l'tnnl y budded and the finished surface so hard that moro nd cannot bo pressed into tlio surface, nftor which all looso material remaining on top of tho road may bo removed, so as to leavo tho surfaco smooth nnd com plete. Century. noncfll of Good Uoitrix. One of tho lxst arguments for good roads is contained in a calculation recently published in ono of tho engineering papers. It stated that on tho wont earth roads not muddy, but sandy a horso can draw only twice as much ns ho can curry on his back; on a fair earth road, 0 times as much; on a good macadamized road, 0 times ns much; on a smooth plank road, 2o times as much; on a stono trackway, JE) times as much, nnd on metal rails, 51 times as much. Tho men who uso the country roads can therefore make money by improving tho roads rather than by buying now bora's every year or two. Lot every fanner givo tho subject o
