The new dress skirts measure from four ami one-quarter yards in width around the bottom to six j'nrds, and the woman who decides upon tlie skirt with the latter measurement must also consent to wear its inevitable accompaniment, the odious hoop skirt. I'relty surahs and marveilleux satins dotted with sillt of a contrasting color, are sold in all the leading shops at very low prices; these are icnlly beautiful even though inexpensive, and are made up into dressy toilets that have a rather full medium-length skirt and low-cut corselet, with guimpe with Queen Anne sleeves made of plain silk the color of the dot. .Short and fanev laelicts form a nnr.
Hon of the waist of nearly all youthful gowns made with round shirts that have slightly gored . outs and full backs, llretelles are also in high favor, and they are made of every sort of fabric from velvet brocade "and silk, to lace chiffon, chaille and pointed French muslin. Trills and flounces, rows of braid, tiny ruches and ribbon velvet are all used to decorate new dress skirts, which Hare more and more as the season progresses. Hoops of quite modest dimensions have already been noticed on various fashionable thoroughfares, but there are yet no positive indications that they will prevail. No one wishes them to prove a success except those who have manufactured them and are striving with might and main to "mako a market" for them. C I). F.
is the name given to a new street shade of that color which appears in cloth, vigogne bourettes. and silk and wool mixtures in expensive materials. It is a handsome dve between that of a crimson rose rind a. rich dahlia color. It is remarkably becoming to both fair and dark women, and one of the best shades that the neutral tonen type could possibly select. The color is so subdued that it is not at all conspicu

The shoulder scam having been mi much lengthened, it follows that sloping shoulders will once again assert their claims to recognition, for the second empire bodiee is hardly compatible with the square-shouldered ideal. The sleeve seam on this peculiar style comes entirely off the shoulders, and the puffs are distended in many cases to ridiculous proportion: but the balloon sleeves hare one virtue to recompense their lack of pace, which is that they make the
AMERICANS TO THE FRONT. Uxlillilta r Domestic M:iuiir.trttiri ArrlrIn ;.--at Ouantitirt it tin- l'jirk. American exhibits are now coming in with a rush. Heretofore the bulk of
the exhibits received has been from
foreign countries, but for the past two
üays American manufacturers have outstripped all competition in landing goods at Jackson park. This argues
well for the American section of the fair, which has heretofore been somewhat backward in the comparative number of exhibits received. Secretary Hurst, of the installation department, reported that a larger quantity of domestic exhibits had been received in the last eight hours than during any similar period since exhibits began to arrive. , In connection with the foreign exhibits have come many letters recommending the appointment of foreign c.vparts as members of the juries of awards. The men recommended are eminent in their respective lines, and have in many cases held similar positions in former international expositions. In making the recommendations world's fair commissioners abroad have generally on tined themselves to staple manufactures, iu which departments some strong men have been indorsed as jurors. Midway between the foreign and American exhibits now arriving could be classed the vesel load of exhibits from Liberia. That country is a foster child of the United States, and the display which has arrived in Philadelphia will do the African icpublic great credit. The industrial and agricultural resources of Liberia are fully represented, and the entertaining exliibi' will arrive in Chicago in a few days. A GIGANTIC GLOBE.

Royal Baking Powder Is Absolutely Pure AHILE there are so many alum baking powv " ders in the market, the use of which all physicians decide render the food unwholesome and liable to produce dyspepsia and other ailments, housekeepers should exercise the utmost care to prevent any powder but the Royal from being brought into their kitchens. In the use of Ro3al there is an absolute certainty of pure and wholesome food. The official State Chemists report: The Royal Baking Po?,'der does not contain ammonia, alum, lims, nor any injurious ingredients. It is absolutely pure and wholesome. The Government reports show all other baking powders to contain impurities. In the use of any baking powder but Royal there is uncertainty if not actual danger. It is unwise to take chances in matters of life and health.
