Editor Courier It is seldom we eee

anything in the Coukikr from this cor

ner of our State, and if you hare space,

you can iusert what I hare written in re

gard to it.

Here in this cheerful village or five or

six hundred inhabitants, is located Han

oyer College. It is situated on a very

high blutt on the Ubio river, about one

mile from the landing, and six miles be

low the city of Madison, which affords

the nearest railroad facilities. The steamboat ride of three or four

boars up the river from Louisville, was

te me a very enjoyable one, mooalight,

gentle breezes, freedom to move about at will, aud sociable passengers, made traveling very pleasant, even for this

warm weather.

Hanover College wae the outgrowth

of a deire on the Presbyterian church

to provide for herself and educated ministry. In 1826 the Salem Presbytery aud

Synod of Kentucky requested the pastor

or Hanover, Jtev. John Fiurtley L'rowe,

D. D., to open and conduct an Academy

until further provisiou be made. The

school was opened Jan. 1st, 1827, in a log cabin with six students, uear where the

Presbyterian church now stands. This

was the humble beginning of Hanover

College, and McCormick Theological

Semioary, of Chicago.

The Academy was very flourishing,

and in 1833 by act of the Legislature,

the institution was incorporated as Hanover College. The euceeee of this

pioneer institution waimost remarkable,

the catalogue of 1834 5 ahowiug an attendance of 238 student!.

But to provide for thie large number

of st ad eel in those pioneer days, aroet

have beee a sou roe or great auxiety to

the treat eee and profeesers ; but every generation bee always bed its benefactors, and tbey bed been provided lor this.

Judge Williamson Dunn donated 900

acres of land, Mrs. Mary Lapsiey. ot

New Albany $30,000, while nearly all the

t'rofeseorsbips have been endowed by

the liberality of other friends of the col

lege. Although the past of colleges in

by a revolving dome, and supplied with

a 7j inch equatorial telescope. Prof

Hunter tskes great pains to snow you

the titsrry heavens.

The view from the college campns of

the Ubio river and surrounding country

is most neauwai indeed. Dr. Fisher, the President, Profs. Gar

rett, More, Young, Keil, Hunter, Adair

and Mcuomb complete tbe faculty,

There have been about 200 students in

attendance this year. Tbe graduating

ciats numoerea eignteen. and their ad

dresses on Commencement day, were evidences of scholarly attainments, and

a credit to tnetr teecners.

Charles M. Leslie, of Versailles, took

the first honors or his class, and in ad ditiou to receiving bis diploma was ore

sented with a $100 check given by Judge Baldwin,, for the ablest eseav on tbe

XcKiuley bill, by any college student of

inuiina. There were able addresses on Wed

needay before the Young Men's Liter

ary societies, by Shackelford Miller,

&eq., oi liOimviiie, Revs. Ualdrige and

Bridges. Mrs. Weill, of Fort Wayne,

maue a moat appropriate address before the Young Ladies' societies. A visitor

is readily impressed with the care which

the students have received at the hands

oi meir proiessors, by tne appearance

wnicu tney rnaKe, and or the bleb de

gree of social refinement of the eltieens

of Hanover and vieinitv. The citisens

are noted for their cordiality, and take

great paius to make visitors enjoy them

selves, no immoral places are per

milled here. Surely parents could be

well eat i fled that their children here would escape many temptations to which (hey would be exposed in other

place?, and Knowing tuer would re

faculty. The endowments of the college

Think what rule maue iu a country like this. It means the admiaUt ratio of larger interests than were ever intrusted to any one nation before. Hera are queetione of taxation and currency, affecting every home in the land. It ie a serious matter. Somebody must rule. If the virtue of tbe republic does not rule it, the voice ef the republic will. Wbtt shall we say, then, ot christian men who abstain from duties because the discharge of them might involve annoyance or lose of bueiuess? Tbey are doiug all they can to bead over the resources ot civilisation to the devil. Tbey are traitors to Jesus Christ. Do not tell me that the vioious elements iu the community can rule. They never did, they never will, if only christian manhood and ehristiau conscience are aroused. Political unrigbteoueueis and social wrongs are due more to the indifference of good men than to the activity of bad men, Tbe christian eitiien will always be found at the polling booth. Ha will take trouble to understand the political situation. He will not he like tbe multitude who regard politics aa a subject which any one is qualified to act upon without any previous thought or instruction. To him politics is a serious business because be takes Christ into it." Politics is a serious business, and there hae never been a time when it was more

necessary that it be considered serious

But even intelligent men will not dee intelligently with political questions

Ifae first duty of every eitixeniato vote, the next is to vote iutslligsntly, tbe
