do, but have been putting in their time
in a vain irl'ort to serve their party at
the tax payer' expense, is attracting at
lention all over the county. In addition
to bonding the county to the tuneot

that they wore tightening the tax-payer' load.thev have compelled the trustee
to vet out and borrow money of private individuals, paying S per cent, interest, in order to meet the expenees. Add all
the amount th trustees will have to borrow to the $'JO,O00 already borrowed by
the countv, and Ihe probability is the county orlker will have to bond the
county for 15.000 or 420,000 more to
make up this year deficiency." The above article proves bow !o
some of the Republican press will stoop
to serve Us ma-tern Every intelligent, fair-minded tux
paver knows that the fiscal vear for set
tlements expires May 31, 1S92, and that
only tor tun first installment of the tax duplicates made from the levies tinder
the new tax law. The second install
ment does not become due until November, IS92. Any county issuing bonds in
tho spring of 1893, must have done so 'ot outstanding debts ol previous years
ier!n tor reducing interest and get-
tmjr thing' into a belter shape, lue
new ux law could have had nothing to do with it, under any circumstance
Even had thu Democratic county official
of ell county, of. whom the lSlutlton
Otirouicle article lies, mule a levy large
enough to pay any outstanding county debts it cotiid not have paid them yet 1 the duplicates under tbe new tax law are not yet collected. The Republican press and Republican
county ouicera have leen schooled to
make the hictl countr and township
levies of this j eara high or higher than heretofore, regardless of any increased valuations, in order to make tbe uew law odious.
Mot of the Democratic county officers
made their levies in accordance with their wants, and increased valuation of taxable. In counties that have had
standing debts for years past, it wa not the intention to nay thy debts at a
dngrle levy. There, of course, has been some exception? to this rule.
For instance. Perry couuty might be
termed a half-way Democratic county.
which has been cursed by corrupt county
treasurers; tirat a democratic treasurei that defaulted to tbe time of $12,000, and

right side up with care. Perry countv
did not reduce its levy in proportion to
its iucreased valuation, but on the con
trary has iticreasod it. Xo doubt but the Republicaasof Perry county will blame ihe uew tax law, when in reality the necessity of their increased levy was
trona an agreement to pay a portion ot
the debt saddled upon the county by
dishonest treasurers elected under the
old Republican boodle election laws.
We invite tbe Indianapolis Journal
uid its Republican followers to investi
gate Democratic Dubois county, where
the sn.styied "rascally Democratic conn
ty officers reduced the local levies" in
accordance with tbe increase of the vat nation of taxabtes. and yet collect h
much money from the tax-payers as they did In previous year, both fer county
and township purposes, and yet pay to
Ihe State its increased portion but not from the pockets of tbe poor and medium
tax-payers, as fully two-thirds of Dubois
couuty tax-payers pay lese, while the other third pay in accordance with their
wealth, and these eves share tbe benefits
of the reduced levies.
The Indianapolis Journal endeavors to
mislead the rank and file of its party by misrepresentations in order to favor its party friends, the wealthy corporations,
railroads, etc. or shame'. Comedown
to Dubois county and learn eoue correct
methods.
To prove that in the event that the
Republican party comes into oower in
the state oe account of tbe tax law, they
would not reduce tha State tax levy to what It was before, we iiuote some bier.

Thee are the hen! liue the Journal

thus the Journal eulogizes a Democrat
