their only hoi: of escape whk ly ooats that they thought their landlords would send to bring them to dry land. The landowners, however, did not appreciate the dire necessity of the poor wretches until many houes had been swept away and their occupants drowned. A letter was received here last nU?ht from one of tlie sufferers, and his story, told in simply negro dialect is most pathetic. The cattle, says he, took to the high places, ami for sustenance began to devour the branches of trees. Chickens flew to the tree tops and remained there for three days until, weak from starvation, they fell into the
water. He says that no estimate can be made of the number of lives lost,
but makes a rough guess that from Saturday until TuesOay night 300 negroes perished. Seth Jones' case is like dozens of others. This negro lay in his hut with a wife and four children Sunday morning when the water came rushing in upon them. Jones attempted to escape with his children, but all avenues were cut off. He and his family sought the roof of the house and watched the water making its way up to them. As the current grew swifter the house began to tremble and in a few moments the logs began to float away one from the other. Jones took up one of hk childrenhis wife and the other three were drowned before his eves. He held on
to a log and attempting to place his child on it she fell and sank into the water, ne alone escaped after floating around for several hours. The Missiamppi river here is almost at a stand within a foot of the danger line and within three feet of the highest mark. The weakest point is at Helena, Ark., bat all is safe there according to late reports. The levees along the river are in good condition
and planters have no very grave tears that this will be such a flood as that of 1SS4 or m.

Detective stories seem to have had their day, Gaboriau ami De Montepin now being comparatively neglected. "German
Syrup
I must ".y a word as to the efficacy of German Syrup. I have used it in my family for Bronchitis, the result of Colds, with most excellent success. I have taken it myself for Throat Troubles, and have derived good results therefrom. I therefore recommend it to my neighbors as an excellent remedy in such
cages. James T. Durette, Ivariysville, Va. Beware of dealers who
offeryou ''something just as goou.
Always insist on uaviu uu" -German Syrup.
