THE OHIBCHAS
1.HUKhwm CeatoMipnraHoa ef Ik AaThe rleh rstrion tin Astees were discovered In 119. and the eon, irerof Xontexnina was already rutMriiiiiK- to Spain when Plamrro Mt sail for l'erw. In 1JWW the empire of tke Ines was entirely overtnrowa; while in iftan thnre still exited, nnknewn to the world, upon Uh Hkjfh tableland of lite eastern conlillera of the Andes an ajrrieultural HMpVe composed of more Oihh a million hhiU, possessing populous cities, fortius plneee anl paved road; hii etllhthed priesthood with temples, altars mid sacrifices; en orgniiixed, hereditary government and h standing army; an approximate computation of time; and various industries, and no little intelligence in liuslMiidry. Over this grow lag civilization of theChibehas the conquest swept like a hurricane, devastate inK' villages, archives, manufactures and cultivated fields dispersing the bones and annihilating the traditions of the miserable Indians. In the course of a few 3'ears they were deprived of their independence, their chiefs, their liberty, and even of their language; at the hands of the most cruel, blind, and persistent persecution; their very name was stricken from the catalogue of existing nations, their descendants were condemned to complete oblivion of their origin, while the antiquarian was left iu the doubt and confusion of fabulous ages with respect to events which immediately preceded this epoch. The hurriedly written narratives of the conquerors speak of the grandeur of the "Valley of Castles" llogota, so culled because of the high etliiices of its cities; of the extensive salt mines of Zipnquira; of the potteries of Tinjaea, and especially of the great riches, the golden decorations, ,h:k1 thu upright mummies covered with Mm! mantles, that were inclosed in the temple of Suamoz, the principal sanctuary of the Chibohas. Nor were these descriptions exaggerated. In our day there have been found in ancient sepulchers the most delicate cotton fabrics, well-preserved mummies, elaltorutcly carved wooden articles of furniture, exquisite vases of baked earth, often imitating the human form and the figures of animals, and an infinite variety of golden ornaments and Images. Iteyond doubt the Chibchas had attained the third place in the civilization of aboriginal America; yet volumes have been written ujon the Aztecs and Incas, while the name of this enlightened contemporary is almost unknown. They are said to have In-en denominated Chilrchas because of the frequent recurrence of the syllables "chi" and "cha" in their tongue, but Humboldt calls them Muiscas or Moscrh. According to the distinguished historian Acosta (whose excellent work has been freely consulted and often translated in the preparation of this paper), the term muisca merely signified "people'' iu their language, and mosca (Cast Ulan for "fly") was proltnbly a corruption of the former, or may have been applied to these Indiana because of the great number that appeared before, and endeavored to stay the progress of the handful of Spaniards led by Qitesada. As sneeeMfnl aa Cortez or Pizarro, unlike them, this famous captain was never rewarded with the coveted tnarquisate of Spain, and has lacked the master hand of Prescott to portray the thrilling incidents of his no less remarkable conquestLieut, l.enily, in Century. "So that's their trick, k i" she muttered, scornfully, tossing her head toward her enemies. "Well, it's fame two ou play at." The next morning theold man Ilrown got up rather early ami started to walk down-town. He had barely reached his front steps when he atraek something. It carried him off his feet like a cyclone. He went bumpety bump down the stops. At tle bottom he struck something else. It carried him along a few feet farther and then shot Win into tt barbed-wire fence, which had been mysteriously strung across the path during the night. The fence stopped him. Hut what a eight he was! His clothes were torn and covered with mud and ashes. The mud and ashes had also mysteriously got on the path during the night His ncsh was lacerated and bruksed and his little finger was broken in two places. Ho picked himself up and crawled Imck into the house and up to the room of his youngest son. "Hen," he said, "was it you put that fear ana peel on the Widder Smith's walk yesterday?" "Yep." THE SCARLET CLOVER. ti Is Vsnr lelr m Alt fart WkM It YjAjLja Ksah Tmt m 1 1 "W mmm. riPem Of late years scarlet eJover has bsome a great faToriU with the farmers ef Deieware, and there are now prt acres sown for one a few years ago. The uses to which it is ap plied are principally three. First and most important as a fertiliser, espe cially oa light and poor land where the eomnsoa red clover would not do welL On suck lead, when aeeompaaied with a small application of superphosphate of lime, it will make a fair growth, Whea iu full bloom it should be plowed under and the ground tilled in say orop desired. But the most popular aae iutde of it as a fertiliser is In oer peach orchards. As soon as the fruit is gathered the ore hard are pre pared i or the elover seed by plowing, karrowlag and rolling. The seed k then sown broad east and, brushed er relied is. By brushing ia meant the SCAJII.ST CI.OVKR. FOI.UQ1 u FLOWrKS. AXD dragging of a large branch of a tree with the foliage on over the seeded ground, than smoothing it sad slightly covering the seed at the same time. The second use is for feeding green to stock. With dairymen aad farmers who soil their cattle St is highly prised for tliis parpose. Many feed it 'to their horses also, and veterina rians say that it is an excellent forage for driving horses, as it does aot scour. The third use is to grow it for seed for market Whea this in. the aim it should not be cut till mature, and then early in the morning or late in the evening, an the seed shakes out easily by handling, and much will be lost if h nulled when very dry. The same care must be used afterward when caring to be threshed. The yield of seed is usually about six bushels per acre, ami the market price about five dollars a bushel. Although elover will do well on poor ground it will respond to generous treatment and make a much larger growth in a richer soil. I hare measured stalks over forty inches ia length, aad I diave no doubt that it ean be grown much taller aad so rank that plowing it under becomes a serious task. When in bloom it is a brilliant and beautiful sight, and very striking to tlte rcye. It is sometimes sown in the head rows, and makea a very handsome border. Flower and seed spikes ami foliage are seen ia the engraving, an average-sized leaf, reduced, being shown ia outline. Ameriesa Agriculturist FACTS WORTH KNOWING. Shoots growisg around the trunks of young trees rob the trees of nourishment They rhoeld never be allowed to start If kept back for a year they will cease to appear. Grass around the trunks will be more serviceable to the tree if the sod is cut and inverted. MAsr treea won hi bear fruit if they had about one-half ef the limbs and branches cut eut, so s to allow the sun to act on the leaves and assist ia preventing- mildew. Too much top anl too many branches draw from the soil the nourishment that should be used f r fewer branches. Now that the time is ooming when there is liability that the pastures will be cropped too close, look out for the in. It is better to do some feeding in the barn rather than that the root of the grass in the pastures be so nearly killed that they will not recover till very late in the spring. Tmk plan of making witless war oa birds Is already beginning to bear adverse fruit in mny sections of the country. Itefore a man begins to kill off the feathered songsters lie should acquaint himself with their customs, so s to lie able to distinguish the injurious from the beneficial, and to carefully protect and foster the latter. Usisfl ewes that have born twin lambs, using young ewes from twins, and using rams that were twins, has given good results in increasing the prolificacy of the flocks where experiments have been made as testa ia that direction. Even triplets have been secured by breeding for greater prolificacy, and by selection for that purpose "a" t C JMtJp Parties wishing to tnke up longwool el sheep should be careful in the selection. If thorough breds are detired and only wishing to purchase a few head, he careful what you are Inlying.
