from the beginning. The dismissed aad disgraced Commissioner of Pen

sions, with all his faults, blunders and

perversa ways, is worthy of mere respect than Hussey. who tried to bring

down the pennons to the lowest level

mad to make the Union veteran the fellow of the blackguard and mercenary. Tanner did not spend ail the saonev that lias made such a hole in

the Treasury. Bussey's decisions in

eases which were passed upon during

the former administration form no in

expenditures for pensions durinir the

past three or four months. 1 here were seventy-seven of thoe decisions alone which cost the Government in the neighborhood of $'200,000. Hut Bussey U Noble's creature and Noble ban the ear of Harrison. When he was at Indianapolis. Inst summer and fall, and the pension sharks were gnashing their teeth because the Democratic 1 'resident and the Democratic Commissioner of Pensions stood between them and the appropriation for Union veterans, Harrison was loud in hi demagogic speeches on unrestrained liberality to the veterans. It was easy for him to promise every thing there and to intimate that the veterans had the first aall at the treasury without limit. He outlined a policy that made the mouths of the pension sharks fairly water. He took the man the sharks

wanted and made him Commissioner

fair Is the sudden ehaage on the part

of the Republican organs. Tanner is ao longer the model Pension Commissioner, the pride of the Grand Army, the most valuable member of the Administration. It hi said that when a traveler in Russia is pursued by wolves he contrives to galH a little on the ravenous pack by shooting seme of them, which causes the others to stop aad devour their fallen companions. How the Republican papers pounce upon the stricken Tanner and tear him to pieces in "ghoulish glee!" Hut they seem to forget that, apart from their inconsistency in aimsing what they a few days ago slobbered over, they are making a serious mistake in thinking that Tanner has ao friends. Tnnner labored zealously for that organization, Mil is entitled to its support. While the Grand Army demands unlimited pensions It can not find fault with the man who was doing his best to procure them. The Republican party is pledged to unlimited pensions, and on the very day that Tanner was bounced the Republican President pro torn, of the United States Senate. Senator Ingslls, who represents the banner Republican State, said, at a gathering of Kansas veterans: "There are just three things that might to be done: First, the limitation on pensions ought to be removed; second, the disability pension bill ought to become a law; third, everv soldier who received an

honorable discharge ought also to roosive a pension. These were the result that Commissioner Tanner had

sought to attain In his administration of the office of Cummlssloner of Pen-

HOME, FARM AND GARDEN. It pays to occasionally invest a little money la ohelee shrubs and vines. Take a few beets, paralps and earroti, cut away the others, leaving a spaee around such, aad allow them to remain for seed. Very little good is done by cutting down weeds that are in full bloom unless they are burned before they are dry. Cut the weeds before they bloom, Squashes should be carefully handled, as the slighest bruise will soon be a dcoayed spot Hubbard squashes may be kept till spring if stored in a dry, airy place free from frost, Snow Drops. One cup of butter, two cups of sugar, whites of live eggs, one small cup of milk, throe cup of prepared flour; flavor with vanilla and nutmeg. Bake In small, round tins. Success In farming comes princiclpally from learning how to do every thlug and the exact time when it should be done, adding the not extravagant presumption that the larmor is industrious and frugal. Ono of the most beautiful sights is a lawn composed entirely of portu-

laccas, whioh bloom until frost, and are of all coIom of flowers. They seod tho ground for the next soason. and make a greon appearance when not in flower.

When poultry Is kept In yards, whether largo or small, a portion of the ground should be left for grass, and the rest should be frequently turned over by plowing or spading. Worms, fresh earth and green food will then be supplied, all of which is necessary. Roao slugs will do damage If the bushes are not guarded. A solution of an ounce of pyrethrum powder in a gallon of water sprayed on the bushes is excellent, but tt stream of water from a force pump, applied daily, is one of tho best remedies that oan be used. Among small plants no cultivator

is better than a good, sharp-toothed rake. Stir the nurlace every few

davs with this, and the labor and cost

of cultivation will be reduced oy nan,

and the better growth secured will be surprising to one who has never tried

the plan of killing the weeds in their erly youth.

HOW TO DISINFECT. The West Ways T KtMlas; B4mm Gctmm 1m Clothing sad Me. Clothing which requires disinfecting should be submitted for about

three hours to a temperature of S50 degrees in a chamber charged with sulphuric fumes from a large quantity of sulphur. The chamber should be so constructed as to prevent the fumes from passing off. No germs can stand this. After a room has been used by a nerson sick with anv contagious dis-

it becomes necessary to disinfect ; It before it is fit to be used again, j This is done by removing and burning the paper on the walls, temoving the bedsteads and other furniture, and exposing them to air and wind, and giv

ing them a fresh coat of varnish; by having the mattress made over new and the hair boiled; by burning in the room three pounds of sulphur, and by whitewashing, painting and papering tlie room anew. Now that it is generally conceded that consumption is caused by germs whioh multiply in the lungs, a method ef disinfecting them which shall be harmless has been sought for, but as yet without avail. The vapor ot creosote, the oil of the eucalyptus and carbolic acid have been tried, and, to some extent, they may paralyze or stun the germs and prevent their rapid increase, hut as the passages of the lungs are delicate and the vapor can not be brought very near to them without Injury, the good effects are slight But there is one method which oaa not fall to prove beneficial, and that is the inhalation of large quantities of fresh, pure air. This is worth more than any disinfectant for the lungs, and oan done harm. Prao Ueal Farmer.
