KEEPING HIM BUSY. Khw h CU)4 fT Pwcm TIhmI iUil m Catttaa In tha spring of lX'tt a pair of red faxes took up their home on a Dakota farm. They dug overl holes on a knoll in n whcat-fle'd, mihI soon aftr four "kits," or young foxe. arrived. Krery day, while harrowing and "owing wbtMt in t be field, say the farmer, I saw thM two old fux lying on the little mound in front of their houie. The kite rolled about in thesiui, playetf with tfm bufrhy tail of their parents aud enjoyed thttmaelvc appareatly as much as m group of kitten?. One morning h neighbor came to work in a field adjoining, taiuglng with him h djf, and the dog, with all thJ curioity of his kind, soon began tho investigation of both farms. H was still a Ion;' distance from the fox-den when I heard a kharp, warning bark anil saw tli kiW diapnoar. A I looked, the mother fox
lny on the mournl, hor ereet, her ntfcso on tho f round, an auenuon. father of the family, with Ms big tall twinging in th ' wind, trotted toward the dog. Can he intend to attack hiiu? I wondered., I had never heard of such a thing.'and tho dog, though not a large one, was still larger than the fox. Hut ltaynurd knew his business belter than J. Ho approached tha intruder unit! the dog saw him, when both stopped for jm insUtnt, and then tho dotr gave chase. Tho fox, with h bark of defiunce. turned and ran in a direction away from his home. At first the dog seemed to gain rapIdly upon the fox, but I watched thorn for nearly a mile before they dUapp'jtirod in tlie prairie grass and concluded that the fox was abto to keep out of tho other's way. In about an hour the dog rftturaed, from a fruitless chase, and for a time be contentedly followed hU master. Then he began prowling around agaiu. All this time tho mother fox had remained on the mound, a picture of quiet vigilance, but now, as the doj: ventured near, sho rose and trotted toward him, and tha dog wa soon, chasing her over the prairie. Hardly liad they disappeared when the male trotted back from some hiding-place and took the position vacated by his mate. The dog returned after a time, unsuccessful as before. During the day ho was again and again tempted to a chaje, first by the male and then by tho female, and. while tho one kept him busy the other watched over the young, who did not show themselves after the first sight of tha dog. It is hard to say which wo admired most the bravery ef the pair in chal- , longing the dog to a race that would have proved fatal had he caught them, their ingenuity in taking turns so that eaoh might be fresh when chasm, their skill in leading him away from their young or their cleverness in throwing him off their track when farenough away.
