The labor of 130 of the convicts ia the Northern peniteutiary was sold for two veer to a Boston shoemaker at n"ftveight ceate per day. These 130 will throw apoa the market about as many shoes aa aay equal number of shoemakers, while there will be purchased from fersaers and others, with the proceeds of tbeir labor, less tbaa half the amount of feeds that 130 mechanics would h?. The contractor e the only one to profit by the contract. Evansville Tribune. Don't the State, and consequently every laboring tax-payer, profit by their labor? Tie true, their labor will enter Into cow petition with that of honest meebonies, as it will if they are put at any ether trade, and if tbey are put upon the highways at labor, as Gov. Ilorey reeeenRwads, they will compete with honet labor. Which is better, to endure tele competition, or for the honest laborere, ia all occupations, to pay taxee to support the raeoais ia idleneea? Theee are the only ways in which coevicta can be diepoeed of, and if it i deterniHed to Mppert them in idleneet their numbers would largely increase, and the expense WMld be enormous. SiagHlmr Ignorance. Gev. Hovey made a singular mistake in hk inaugural addr8a published, in regard to the school funds. He said : j "Seme confusion and inequality has arleea in reporting the number of pupils ia each couaty as kaving attended the common schools. As the distribution ef the funds depends upon the number thus reported, I would suggest that each superintendent and teacher in reporting the numbers bo required to give the name ef each pupil who haa attended during that period, and in no case count the name more tbaa once." A moment's examination of the law would have informed the Gov. that the dlatribntion ol the school funds are made upon the basis of enumeration, of persona ef school age, by Township Trustees, without regard to the number attending schools. His recommendation to difert the license and dog tax funds from the school revenue to the road revenue will hardly be received with favor by any party. rrSenater Tray lor takes a prominent nosition in tea Lefffalattir ar t.,i:.,. lie is Chairman of the Committee of the oosnue on urgaaization of fjourta, and member of the committees on Agriculwre, on Federal Relations, on Mines and Mining, and the joint standing committee oa State Li bra r. His step-father replied "all right," and tak in a light went to the store with hirn. Two of the children, one a bro titer of Kesterson and the other a son of Nicholson, started with them, but Kf s lersoa sent ihetn back. In a short time the family heard a pistol shot, and daughter, looking toward the store, saw a man leave tt by the imck door and run She told her mother and they started for the store, where they found all lights out, and were compelled to go back to the huue fur a liuht. Died on the 9th, ef Jan. 3886. Miss Lenora L. Green, aged about 19 years. Again death has visited us and claimed for his victim one who had but ittst en tered into the full bloom of womanhood, fully equipped to assist her fellow mor tals ia lighting the battle of life bravely, and few can be missed more bv a wide circle of friends, or be a greater lo-a bv death to home and loved ones. With her energy, and love for books, she had ac quired sufficient education to teach in our public schools, and had taught the greater part of her first term. Altertbe Christmas holidays were spent with her ioved ones at borne, she bad but iut re turned to her school, situated in Columbia Tp., when her father was summoned to her bed side, and all that kind and loving hands could do to baffle the ravages of the disease, was only to allay her suffering, aud she passed awav as gently and peacefully as she had always lived, to that bourne from which no one can ever return. Ia her delirium she often spoke of being taken home, and those anxious ones could only wait for her return, who had so shortlv before seen her go away so full of life and ex pectant hope, now cold and lifeless, clad in.her burial robes. A good heavenly Father had seen fit to call her awav from the cares of life, and give her that sweet rest for which the tired spirit often grieves. It or a, as she was famlliarlv known. professed Christ, and his love, when quite young, and united with the Cum berland Presbyterian church, but was in after life convinced that the M. E. church was her choice, but bad yet never made any change ia her relation ; yet she olten expressed her favor for that church. iter life was one of purity and use fulness, and the swwst smile that linger ed round her shrouded features, seemed to say "do not weep for me." But when we see our young friends, that are so full of life and expectant hope eo suddenly etricKen uown, now sod indeed are our hearts, and their sweet rest seems to only mock our anguish. Yet la the death of our dear Nora wa are only reminded that to die the christian's death, is only to leave all our troubles ef earth at the threshold of the grim- monster, and silently and peacefully enter its dark por tak.
