Many have discoursed learnedly upon dreams, propounding wise theo ries and making plausible suggestions, yet no one has ever arrived at any real solution oi tho matter. It is only barrier of cloud that bars tho way to kiwwlodge thereof, yet no fortress wall could bo more imnroirnable. It is but a stop from our noisy, busy world to tho vague and vast territory where Hollow as a breathing spell, Dreamland Ilea forlorn ot light but no man may set up milestones along that trackless waste. Wo only know that, when all things lapse to a sleep and a forgetting," tho imagiaatton becomes a fly-by-night, and tho witn Hjteed nvor land and sea liko wild birds set free from the cage. There are few creatures exempt from these nocturnal journoylngs, however brief and circumscribed tho' may bo. The dog "hunts in dreams," the cat fights ia battles ever again and tho bird sings in its sleep, while oven tho most commonplace person can usually give some crudo account of his ex iMjriences In slumber. Certain dreams are common to all people falling from a precipice, down, down, to riomo unfatbomed gulf; striving to walk upon a tloor that sinks horribly betiouth the feet; endeavoring, In urgent haste, to put on garments that drop off, turn wrong sldo out and dovolot! other Impish propensities; riding in a conch that suddenly crumbles to pieces and leaves one staring in tho middle ( Die reed. Nor can the last impression received by tho mind before slumber overwhelms It he calculated upon, for we may read of Mother Wood's execution, and dream, immediately afterward, of a cabbage gardon; or, transversely, we may bo cradled by most soothing, placid meditations, yet tho weird magician, who kt.vh tho branch of poppies, will beckon us to follow through soaa of gore. Kxperlment has proved that dreams may be influenced, if not controlled, through the Inlets of the senses; the thunder of drays upon the cobble stones suggested a tempest to tho dreamer, and the fumes of sulphur or tho pleasant odors of aromatic water near tho nostrils transport him to strange countries. For this reason tho noises of awakening life give color and movement to the visions that "hang upon the edge of day," rendering them more roal and vivid than those which come at dead of night It is somewhat disenchanting to realize thatdysopsia is one of tho prime factors in dream making. At a meeting of the Academy of Sci ences of San Francisco, a number of years since, Mr. Stearns presented a paper upon tho money of uncivilized man, in which ho remarked that the durability and ouso of manipulation of shells have long caused them to bo em ployed In domestic intercourse and trade; nnd, among these, ho first enumerated the common clam of the eastern coast of tho United States, tho purple portion of which constituted tho wampum, or one class of their money, while another was made from tho axos of a species of Pyrula. In each shell about half an Inch in diameter of the inside is of this purple color, and this was converted into heads, which they called Sucknnhock, or black money, and.had twice the valuo of their white money or wampum proper, which was made of the Motauhock or Pyrula. This Was used not only among tho Indians, but among the whites; and it is remarked that the solid cash with which the salaries of ministers were formally paid Included black and white wam pum. Iho money of the west-coast Indians is a species of tusk-shell, or Dental lum, resembling a hollow elephant's tusk, the worth depending upon tho length of the shell. These are strung on corns and worked up in various forms of beaded and other ornaments, having a distinct valuo among the Indians, according to the size of tho shell and their number, quite at fixed us that of the specie or tho paper money of the United States. Theme of the money cowry in Africa is well known, many tons of the shells being annually Imported to Great Britain, and again exported for barter with the native tribes. Cfiristtan at Work. In a certain sense it is true, as an old lady once said, that if you have thirteen children, you'll find mo two of them can be managed alike." Complain as you will about it, the human frame is a machine, and all human frames are pretty much alike, and, as Mrs. Urownlng says: "need ono flannel, with a proper sewso of differonco ia tho quality." The vast majority of children should be brought up to go to bed early; to rise early; to oat three wholesome, abundant meals per day, and absolutely" nothing else; to be scrupulously regular ia main taining both inner and outer cleanliness; to live as much as possible In the open air; and to abhor idleness.
