Almost daily complaints are heard ot seeds that did not grow and seeds that produced something different from what was bargained for, and it often happens that a large part of the year's labor and consequent income is lost. THE WEIGHT OF HOGS. Tmm MMt rroataW War erf Fattealaft rrkrM for Market. Any one who will visit the stock yards when large numbers of hogs are being received will notice a great difference in the else of those marketed now, compare with what were to be seen some years ago. Then the course followed quite generally was to keep on feeding hogs until they reached a weight of from for hundred to five heedred pound, which neceeeitated keeping them through two winters. This manner of feeding for market was less profitable, to be sure, than that followed now, when comparatively few hogs welch over three hundred pounds, but it took farmers some time to fully comprehend how much better in eve.T wav it was to crowd the swine by full feeding from birth, so that they would reach three hundred pounds weight when a year ohl. ' When they came to realize the advantage of the earlier maturing system, old-time methods were abandoned, ami now very few nogs are kept till they reach four hundred pounds. Those that weigh from two hundred and fifty to three hundred pounds sell as readily and at as good prices "as those weighing mote, and these veights may be made by the time the hog is ten to twelve months old. This plan is in marked contrast to that followed before when pigs were kept along on a light ration the first winter, and often had not made a weight of over sixty to sevettjy pounds when they were eight to ten month sold. The fanner had not then calculated the cost of feediitg as he has done since. His idea was simply to keep the pig until they had reached a certain slae ami then put them up to fatten. Ofton the expettee of thie was nearly or quite what it would have been to feed them in such a way as to reach a marketable Im at about the same age. The question of feeding is better understood now among farmers than it was in those years. They now know that it takes less food to put a pound on a pis: two months old than on one double that age, and kea, to put weight on a pig that weighs one hundred pounds wan one that we srht two hundred pounds. Thoyounger the animal the less wed it takes to make the same gain. Generally speaking, the older the animal the mora food must be given to add to its weight, and this continues to increase until maturity is reached. It Is estimated that it takes from thirty to forty per oent more to make a full ration tho second year than it did the nrst, and at the same time the gain i only about two-thirds n muok mcillful feeding must be followed in wder to grow the largest amount of neat at a given cost, and the smmer pig has rtaohad amarketaMe weight tat better the profct.
