The Paris obervatory hue in successful working order an ingenious aad effective apparatus for celestial photography. 3ders. Paul and Prosper Henry, aWe and earnest workers at the olHrvator, photographed, by means of this apparatus, the well-known cluster of stars called the Pleiades on the 16th of la November. Greatly to their surprise, a new nebula made it appearance on the photographic plate. This wonderful agent pictured aa object wkich their ehwett ebervaiioa through the largi? telescope of the Pari oWrvatory failed to detect Ia order to make a&suranee doubly surs, the dut r wa? pltotographed three timoa iib5cquently, on the Bth and 9th of Hect'mher and on the SUt of January. The result was always the same. The nebula was plainly discerned ia the photograph, and refused to appear to the eye of the ol?erverin the telescope. The Mews. Henry have published a drawing of the new nebula. It ha a curious and weird appearance. It Hems to start from Main, one of the sfven sisters of the group, moving at lir-t toward the west and then turning suddenly toward the north aad at last fading into invisibility, and at a Uitance of about three seconds from the Mar. A more distinct and ill-donned Krtion of the nebula makes its way to the south. The nebula is very intense and takes on a plainlv marked spiral form, bearing a rWmblance to agr Kitie and one-snled' solar corona, aad Juggestihg the great nebula of Orion , The dlsn: of the nebula In the ' Pleiades has revived the memory of mytriona objects that have been seen from time to time among the stars of 1 this rreun. In 1779 Jeauri0.smbHW " a chart of the Pleiades sues aar which v nebula appears near the star Atlas. Ia 18o9 Tempel discovered a nebula in the same cluster, near the star Merope. which was seen by several other ob-H-rrers. Both of these nel-ulw have uisappeareti, and the nebula discovered by the Henrys occupies an entirely 4 if-1 ferent plaoe: apparently branchiae out Ironi Mala. Three, therefore, of the stars composing the Pleiades either are or have been surrounded by nebulous m&Ma. There are some men who ourht to be ashamed to look an honert horse in the face. None of our domestic animals, how ever much they may suffer from neglect, receive so much abuse as the horse. We refer more especially to the work-horse, oa the farm and before the cart and truck. Carriage horse generally fare well enough or at least as well as those having care of them know how to keep thorn since they are owned by well-to-do man, who take pride in their fine appearance and spirited action. Hut, as a rule, the poor worker receive no such advantage from the pride of his owner. There are many exceptions, bt the number of horses that fall under the head of the aba-ted is sufficient to establish the rule. Underfed, everworked, poorly groomed and ofton badly sheltered, every point in the poor creature k an expression of patient suffering. It is a painful sight to behold a horse with the sharp aagles of its bones sticking out in all directions and the ribs painfully eav to count, tugging along before a tooheavy load, and the driver, with his feet hanging over the end-board of the wagon, constantly applying the irritating hwh to keep the poor creature from dropping into a HstleW, droning gait; and sometimes a team is so far run down and exhausted that even the lah appears to make no impreeeion. At leatt, it fails to quicken the pace or to awaken even the faintest apparent recognition from the poor jaded beast. But the lah keeps flying through the air, all the same, and the sting of it must add to the sufferings of the stolid rack-o'-boneic This picture is not overdrawn. It may be seen in the streets of any city or large village every working day of the year. The owner may be in part excusable on the fcore of poverty but his beet excuse is his ignorance. For, if he did but know it, he oouM get much more value in service than the extra cost of feed eut of his horses if he kept thorn in Eood condition, while he would save imsclf the extra work and lame shea Idor resulting from the incessant swing of the arm in applying the lash. There can be no possible economy in starving a horse, or any other work animal; for the available force ia the horse is what is put into it through its food, and as true as the truism, "something ean not come of nothing," is true, the owner can get no more out ofkw horses than be puta into them. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ean do the animal world no better service than to adopt some aieans of educating the ignorant owners of live-stock as to the best methods of feed and care m order to secure the best paying results. ifm4ien ml Live-Steele Jmrmu.
