VITALITY Of KCtM.
My eapsrieaee in seed -abating, need raising and ssJsetion places the per sent, of vitality quits low in sssds par ehassd or home-grown. Dnring tsn years I kavs foe ad the average loss to be near 87 par oont when the plan nag alone to taken into aoeonnt;ajt when both planting and non-sIsetion ars reckoned, at loast half the seed and plants of any rains are lost. a" If ws would kave a thing dons wall wit should do it ourselves," to an adage particularly applicable to the seed-raising business. It most be done with the greatest oare and elossst attention. It is a sxpensive bneiness to buy 'and plant cheap non-selseted seeds; crops toe) often show a large proportion of them to have been not only lifeless but in many eases criminally ad n Iterated. While testing all kinds-exotic and indigenous tkat ean be grown in this latitude, many of thorn coming through the Agricultural Bureau at Washington, I have found but about 88 per cent. vital enough to germinate and not I more than 80 per eent, of those germ inating prodnoe crops of any value. I j have Vet to obtain from any source samples 100 grains of which have produced 100 healthy plant To illus trate: From over 500 packages of different seeds I selected 100 of the beet sHH.imens from each, and carefully planted them in good soil and under the most favorable conditions. Five of them will show the highest and lowest number germinating: M klmlnoT eora. C S n kiwis or ImM..... H T m kirni or beets W S M kind or oM M ' 44 MS kiwi of wheat W SS In counting all that oame np of each the per cent, did not reach fifty except in the oats and wheat, tke seed of which I raised myself. In selecting seeds of various plant! the following suggestions will be found valuable to the producer: Select the head, ear, panicle, raceme and spike that ripen earliest; because such repeated and continued selection has a tendency to shorten the period of maturity. Select the upper ear on medium and the mot prolific stalks: the middle or main stem on the raceme and panicle; the parent head of the stool of wheat, rye, barley and timothy; the first pistillate flower on the mam vine of squashes, pumpkins, etc. By following up such a system of selection I have made the cereals double the yield in two seasons and quadruple it in live. The quality also will be improved in proportion. For many years I have sown only thirty inmndsof wheat, oats, barley and rye per acre in field culture, and only ten and tweHty pounds in experimental work. Under favorable conditions thirty pounds will invariably produce more and better grain than sixty, ninety or one hundred and twenty. Of course the seed must be sound, clean ad genuine. This season, on ordinary elay loam, a single ounce each of 158 kinds of wheat was sown to the square rod. The whole numler of pounds raised on the 168 square rods was 2,499, averaging li 1-8 Sounds per square rod, or over 48$ ushels per acre. With two ounces of seed per square rod, of twenty pounds per acre, the yield was a very little more in tke experimental work. Trtf, A. E. Blount, t K. Y. Tribune. AN INSUFFICIENT TEST. They can not settle the breed standard of milk for the reason that tkere is suck a difference in animals of the same breed. But they are valuable in etabliehiag outline judgment. The question of the superiority of tke dairy breeds fordairy purposes can not rest on a qualitative analysis. Suppose the Mesh of a Jersey, a Holstein, a short horn and a Galloway steerwere submitted o Prof. Brown to determine by analysis which is the most profitable breed for Imeh'ng purposes. He would say: "Gentlemen, I can give yon an understanding of the relative elements of the several specimens of Mesh before me. .They may vary somewhat in their constituent relations, but simple analysis will throw no light on the aptitude of the animal or breed for forming Mesh profitably." The same principle holds good inmUk, The question "which is the best cowP" must be answered in the light of several other questions. Chief of which is the purpose she is wanted for; whether butter, beef or cheese and milk. In this division of purHK we are but obedient to an established drift or tendeney, made so by years of special purpose breeding. This principle is clearly sen and obeyed in our understanding of horses and dogs. A man would b eminted a fool that undertook to hnnt snipe with a bull-dog. ImieWte TrMtmwil. Paralysis in horses almost invariably afteets the hind limbs, and is due to a disordered condition of the sciatic nerve. The attack to generally very Midden and occurs when the animal is ia harness, the f rat symptom being a weakness in one hind leg, which will be thrown out toward the shaft or traces, aeeomnanied bv a knuckling of the fet lock. Tke first thought that usually occurs to the driver to that the animal must have stenned upon someta'tar that has injured its foot. Unless the horse is stopped and active treatment begun at once tbe other leg win generally be affected in a short time, when il the attack is severe the animal will fal tinon its haunches aad ean not rise. Upon the fret appearance of faltering and knuckling the horse should be stopped and covered with blankets so as to keep the loin and him warm. The kin marter and gaekia should then be rubbed briskly for a short time. Call ia the assistance of some strong men, and after removing the patient from the shafts place a blanket, robe or strong piece of canvass under the belly, well hack toward tbe hind lege, and let one or two men take hold of it on each side to help support tke animal, which should be. led carefully to the nearest stable. Any attempt at hurrying will aggravate the complaiat, ami k the sufferer falls the ehanees for recovery are very much diminished. Call in a veterinary surgeon at the earliest possible moment. In the Meantime, after reaching the stable, apply water as hot as it can be borne to the loin, hip and thigh. A little mustard added to tbe water will increnee its stimulating properties. As a remedy give a half dram of mix vomica in a mat of milk night and morning. Paralysis is sometimes mistaken for spinal meningitis. A horce suffering from the latter complaint, when he is placed upon his feet by means of a slinr, can support himself, while in paralysis it is inipossible for him to bear his weight upon his legs. The fact should be borne in mind that R to of the utmost importance to stop the animal and take him from the carriage, if upon the road, the instaut any indication of faltering or knuckling is noticed. N. Y. Jlernk. WHY SEEDS FAIL. aw saw inv a rwvfr nvrpnif 0 SMMW The proper keeping of seeds has much to do rvith their germination. While there are many eeds of perennials tkat should 1ms sown as soon as ripe, it to different with annuals and biennials. The carrot, parsnip and meet other garden vegetables are in an uanataral condition. Cultivation has caused these to produce root many times larger and much more Htcculcnt that in their wikl state. The ceds of thee whan self-sown a soon as ripe, produce degenerate plants, which have reverted to the natural state, and are no longer useful. In the experiments of Prof. Buokman and M. Vilmorin on the improvement of tke carrot, radish, etc., from the degenerate forms known as weeds, it was found that keeping tke seeds dry during the winter and sowing them in spring wae an important agent in restoring these plants to their useful condition. Ket, suspended growth for a time, lias an important influence in keeping such plants in the artificial condition produced by cultivation. The manner hi which seeds are kept during tke winter kae much to do with their value at wowing time. We should keep in mind the fact, that seeds mm not a collection of fragments of vegetable matter, like a lot of shoe pegs.
