There has been scarcely a ripple to break tbe political calm during the past week. The hitter contests waged is Ohio, Virginia and New York are not
felt here. This is unusual for it has bee
the habit of previous administrations to
m row tiieiaseives into tlie midst of sue
comasia wun an ineir patronage, ores
land however baa said that he will take
no active part in the, state elections and
his Cabinet have shown a determination
to Imitate his example. But this refuse
to euter the fray must not he construed
into any lack o( interest In Democratic success. It Is (he belief of the President
and hie constitutional advisers that they have a work before them of the grandest scope, and that the cause of
true Democracy in state elections wi
ue nest promoted uy the general gov
eminent in an example of rigid attention
to the work that strictly belongs to It.
The question as to who should be the
successor of Prof. Hilgard as Superintendent of the Coast Survey, has been the subject of mature consideration on
the part of the President ever since the
first Irregularities in that bureau were
discovered. There are so many and
such weighty interests involved that
was a difficult question to decide who would be the best man for the place. It
requires a man of good executive ability
as well as of eminent scientific qualities
It appeared to the President that these
qualities were united in the person on

Prof. Agafii7s name was the choice
of the President himself. No one ree

selection was tbe result of a desire of the

Justice is evidently slwut to catch up
with some of the township trustees who
have issued fraudulent orders. Mr.
Walter Stanton, of Coffin et Btanton,
went before the grand jury in Morgan
county and hud Jacob A. bhipley, true
tee of Gregg township, indicted tor con
splracy with the Pollards to defraud the
towuship uy issuing jo.oib.ho in warrants for which there Is no consideration.
Shipley was placed under $3,000 bonds, HHtl at last accounts was still in jail, and
he refuoes to talk about tne matter. Nr. Stanton says he has a, sure case against
him. as he made to him a state
ment which real I v amounts to a confes
sion. Up to date the following trustees
are mining, and all of them are supposed
to be in Canada: John B. Clawsou,
Logan townsliin. Warren county : Cass.
ii. Brown, Washington township, Daviess county; John Grirasley, Steele
township, Daviess county; John Clark, Iiarr township, Daviess county; Henry A. Tliorne. Morgan township, Harrison
county : Walter U. Ilodman, Monroe
township, Washington county ; Norman r,. JntiM. Liberty townshin. Parke coun
ty ; Robert N. Martin, Owen township,
JSCkSOB county. Petersburg News: The fast that within two months two young ladies have left here to become mothers, that three young men have 4,skipied" out to
avoid baetardy suits, that two "forced"
weddings have occurred and one young man has been placed under $100 bond;
to answer at the next term of court to the euarge of bastardy, to say nethlngj of the other scandalous reports in circu
lation. Is evidence sufficient that, the
morals of the town U on the decline.

Who Doe tli. BuIMfwIsif . Under the leadership of John Skrman the Republicans of Ohio are committed to the ridiculous doctrine of the bloody shirt, aud against plain Jgiiree are striving to prove to Intelligent hearers that the KepubUean voters of the south are deprived of their eufrage through fear. The N. Y. World has compiled the following table, which effectually refutes the slander and shows that the real bulldozing is in Republican localities:
Maleeef votkilC ate. 76.9M

According to these figures, taken from
the Tenth uensus and American Al
manae, the worst bulldozlug in 1980 was In Rhode Island and tbe least la South
Carolina. In Massachusetts 64 per cent
Carolina 84 per cent., in Rhode Island
w per cent. In litttt, with the same M sis for computation. Rhode Island stil
held tlie lead for proscription of voters, only 40 per eeut. voting in that 8 fate, while 99 per cent, voted in Florida. There was no eon test aud no campaign in tbe Southern states named, whUe ev
ery possible effort was made to eaptnre
and defend the electoral vote of Mas

Tenneesee' 78 per cent In Louisiana
and Mississippi only 60 per cent, voted,
and in South Carolina only 44, but the

looked down over the rotomac Bats in

The silence tint followed was painful.
The President returned to his desk and
