Mr. Hanlon's most formid able competitor, however, wae Repre sontative Clark Creclius. of Crawford cotinty, who had a numerously signed pt lit ion, iuciu4iing mauy -proKiinent Indiaa Democrats. Terre liante and v ansville also contest! strongly for the appointment, and Mr. Han Ion's success is, therefore, a most gratifying victorv to him and equally gratifying to the citilens of New Albany the more so ae it will make Xew Albnny again the head quarters of the district. As Auditor of Fiord county Mr. Bill ion made a most honorable record. Du ring his entire term not a single error occurred in the complicated records of office, and after two terms he retired and made his final settlement with the Commissioners in half an hour's time, so exact had been the book-keeping of the office. As a Representative in the Legislature he has been diligent and faithful to every interest of hk constitu ents. He will doubtless make an equal ly favorable record as Collector ot In ternal Revenue of the district. Mr. Hanlon is in the city to-day making the necessary arrangement's tor filling his bond. Xew Albany Ledger. Everybody who knows Tom. Hanlon. and very few active Democrats in South era Indiana do not, will rejoice at his selection. Faithful, honest, mdustrious, the soul of honor, a Democrat in whom there is no shadow of guile, and a wholecoaled, genial Irish American, bis ap pointment is an assurance of proper condact in the office, a thorough collection of the revenues, and will not be objected to by anybody but plaoe hunters, lie re's to you, Tom. Uanloa I Major Carter, the present Republican Collector, says the collections in this district from June 30. 1SS3, to June 30, ivs.i, were i.ai,54 74. There are thirty-three eeuntiss in the district. For fat eattle, line horses, brave men and pretty women, particularly the young ladies, Topeka takes the entire cake. Parties are held by the yonnar folks every week. At Jim iIhjh s last week one of the young bloods, F. II., got so exciieu he pushed a lauy throneh a win dow, and had to buy new sash and glass. The next party is to be held at M. Til man's Saturday niuht, and a show of an imsis ana other performances is arrang ed for the occasion by Lee, as manager, wiwi jvsasae cow eoys, as ciog aancers, The people here think Jack and Jerry were mistaken in the voice that hollered "Go-preachee," and that it came irom the two cow-boys. a wo young genuemen wanted to go and see two young ladies last week, but hadn't the spunk to go in at the front door. They went slipping aronad the house, and tried to peep in at a window when one 01 the ladies called to them ill they were alter chickens they would Ind soma roosting in a tree a little farther back. The would-be gallants skedaddled in a hurry, and bow blush deeply if chickens ere mentioned. Trustee Green believes in increasing the population of his township. He sits back in his big chair now and sings "Oh, my Lord, ain't I happy ; sweet little girl to oall me peppy." 1 Sze. The Right et Inebriates. Feekskill man awarded f3,S60 for damages to his person, received by fall lag in a hole in the street. The ease was appealed to the Supreme Court, where it was argued the man was drunk when injured. In his decision Chief Jnstiee Barnard says: "I don't think a man is guilty ef contributory negligence if he rets drank and falls into a hole. A man wants a good street to walk in if be does et drunk." Public sentiment will up bold this decision. The Chief Justice might have gone still further, and said that a man never needs a good street so much as when he u drunk. When he is sober be may avoid pit-falls, holes, and e b? ructions althoagh he does not always succeed in doing so but when "under the influence' he is not responsi ble lor the bad condition of the thorough fares. He has enough to do to manage the "tangle-foot" part of this a flair with out turning himself into an object lesson to illustrate the earsTessaess or criminal negligence of those oflclal nersotts whose business it is to see that the streets are kept in proper condition. In other words, drunken men have rights whiek street commissioners are bound to respect. X. Y. Com. Adv.
