Hwm bitterly cold thai night The wind swept furiously down, the long avenues, a tiding the light enow, that had Just "eased to fall flying hither ' and thither through the air, sweeping it front om aide of the street and piling it up with methodical carefulness on the other; driving it in long, feathery drifts from the housetojn and dusting it down the necks of unfortunate pedestrians in spite of their ctosely-but-toned coats mid turned-up collars. All shivered as they -ame to thai ooraar. and then with naif-averted heads harried past into the wore sheltered street beyond. The Man ia the Shadow crouched closer vet into the archway of the big bank building and looked curiously out on the passing throng. Everybody seemed to ha anxious to get house as who wouldn't be in each weather but that was no reason why everybody should look so happy and expectant over each an ordinary event. Then, too, by another extraordinary coincidence, everybody' seemed provided with a bundle or package of some sort and each package! Whitey-brown paretis, tied np snugly, mysterious in their every aspect; brown paper parcels whose very folds breathed a delightful saggesiivenead of turkey and pudding; smooth, trim packages with leek, well-rounded sides, thoroughly conventional and respectable; broken, disreputable ones, with perchance a skate-strap or a china doll's head peeping out, and thus basely betraying its owner's secrets: long 'ones and abort ones, little packets that eonld be carried in the waistcoat pocket, aad valuable, no doubt, in inverse proportion to their sise, and big bundles tightly bound with manifold shawl-straps and proving almost loo much for their struggling owners. Everybody that was anybody seemed pasting that particular corner that particular sight and carrying everything thai could be sought m the city. The Man in the Shadow looked ptuxled. Acrws the wav the door of a shop opened, and a fair hair flying oui little girl, with long out f ram Maeslh her red worsted hood, cause ranninr aeur the crosains. Bat the around was silnoery, and the rash little adventuress suddenly disappeared into the big snowdrift beyond the curtMstoue. The Maa in the Shadow uttered a kw exclamation and, darting out. lifted her up. "Oh! I've broken K," she exclaimed, anxiously pulling out something from her tiny pocket. "No. it isn't either: Tm so glad. It's for Christmas, you know, and Tm ever so much obliged to you." Then, turning quickly around, she sped away again. "tXcour that's what Hall means Christmai Evc"-mttered the maa. spring back to hi old idroiter. "Much ood it does me" - and he frowned as he kicked the snow off his boots drew his threadbare coat yet closely about him. " It is showing late and the crowd U getting thinner. ,r Suddenly a tall figure closely enveloped in a long ulster hurried pa -t. The slouched bat was pulled low down over the pedestrian' forehead, but as he came into lite circle of light under the )amp-po4 a Midden gur of wind lifted It off his head and sent It flying on ahead of him. The Man hi the Shadow started and took a step forward as though about to follow him. " Pshaw, what a fool I am!," he aidt as he shrank bock, "as if H could be he and even If It were ' 'Come, my man. move 00: nokmfing around here!" met his ear. and Miceman Buffer looked in suspiciously upon th (Touching nadirs. A broad beau: of roddr lgh flahed out over the snow. A bfuff-tamt mas bent over him and shook him vigorously. " Come, my mam,' he said, "this won t do! Another half-hour and you'd never have beard the Christ bum tjells " The man dragged aim inside aad looked at him haH-curtonslv. half compassionately. "Tramp, eh?" be eacuUud. " Well, even a tramp aught to have shelter a night like this. Wait-here till you feel better." The stranger looked stupidly around him.
