The reason may be that much nonsense has been published about the difficulties of raising it, and that we have to wait two or three years for the full maturity of the plant. It is true that a full crop will not be given in leas than three years, but when the bed is once made, the job hi done for a dozen or twenty years. If made this spring, there will be one year the less to watt. Anv good, widl-dralned soil that will bear corn is suitable for asparagus. Put in a half-cord of manure to every four squire rods of ground. Work it in thoroughly. Bet out one-year-old plant, in rows four feet apart, end two feet in the row. They can be kept clean then with the harrow or cultivator. It should have cultivation once kt two weeks, through the growing season. Cover the beds with manure in ihe fall, and fork it under in the spring. Cultivate thoroughly through the second season and topdrens as before. The second season a few stalks may be cut in April and Mny, but there should be no close cutting until the third year, snd this should not be continued later than the middle of June. The plants most hare time to grow, nnd recuperate in midsummer, or the bed will soon fall. The secret of large, fine asparagus is abundant manure, applied In the fall every season, thorough cultivation until the tops prevent, and stopping the cutting by the middle of June. The blanched asparagus that is so popular in stwne markets, is secured by covering the beds with sea-we si, straw or other mulch. Late eAueiiments on Lake Zurich. conducted by M. Asper, show conclusively that light will penetrate water to the depth at least of 90 meters. He used emulsion plates, and sunk them at depths of 40, 60, 60, 70, and 90 meters in the lake one aiarht last autumn. In the moraine- all the olates showed that the tight had acted upon them. Substantially the same method bad been tried by Piofeesor Forel in Iake Lemaa, but he did not think that light went further down than 40 meters. The difference in oonoUision is due to the fact that Professor Forel used albunaeniied paper and M. Asper the moreaansitivs photoSTaphic emnlsdon plates.
