T an intwotflnj; aldmw by S. T, K. frimr. rwntly read in Illinois, oh the Mihjeet Of tile drain ajfe the advantage, of thorough drainavo m a neeeary part of effleient and profitable farming were predated in ft striking inacner. It i th only remedy, not only for e.v eetMive water on and in the il, but for the oolilpea, sotynus and hardness that cause seed to rot without germ inatinc;, stunt thn growth of phiota and deiirive them of the full sustenance whleh they need to bring themie huge sfate and productiveness. An annual eomplalnt with fcrmors hi the tpring U that their hwd are too wet to be plowed; they are soaked with water which must be left to run off or dry up before the task of patting in a crop eaa be commenced. TJ16 occasions delay at a season of die year when dan are moat valuable; audit is patul&riy disadvantageous to com, whieh ought to be Slanted eark that It may malum before be dry weather of the hater part of summer. But tile draining is expensive. This ! true; and though the very bent method of drainage that can he need, it can be afforded only tm farming land of the highlit value in the neighborhood of cities and towns. Tho cost of tiles, however, l distributed over a long series of year, for, one? laid down, they will do their duty for a lifetime; and, being covered up, they do not disfimire the around, stnee thev mav be plowed oTer without being dfetwrbed. This method of drainage is a neoesaarr part of farming in England and Belgitim, and it In said that those eountries eouUl not yield the large, crop they do yield and support their large populations but for the important advantages it secures. In the not-distant future, when the lerel prairie lanN f Illinois and MiMouri shall have largel v increaf d in value, every level farm will hare to he underlaid with porous tiles to bear off the execus of water. Underground draining will be regarded ai an indispensable, feature in agrieultnre. and improved health and larger crops will be Koine of th fruit of it. Vat, 8 ihere are comparatively few farming regions in MisDbtiri where un dergnHtnd tile-drainage can be aflonled, there are few lerel farms afflicted with execs of moisture in the spring of the year that cannot afford, the trifling cost of the cheaper method of draining by open ditches. Ojien dltohea are mt ai rood for many reasons, as underground drains, but they are the next thing to them. They would drain many a rich, low ground which cannot he efficiently cultivated on account of the water which stands upon It at certain seasons; they would dry much Mat land thai cannot be plowed till late ht the season; they would hnpart greater warmth and, lightnest to the soil, and they would hvuire hotter health to the distrfett where they are generally used.-.. A Female Lawyer. Mr. Belva Loekwood, of the Washington bar, seems to be no better than a man aad a brother. It seams that a Mrs. Fanny Kelly Gordon sued Mr. Belva Loekwood as joint maker with one Elisabeth (J. Clark of a promissory note lor tUfiot), whereupon Mrs. Lookwood promptly pleaded, "I am married, and my note Is void." To this plea followed divers replications and surrebutters, which brought before Justice Me Arthur, who held the court at the Federal capital, the fact that the note had some relations with Mrs. Belva Iook wood's prvctioe as a lawyer. Then the Justice, waxing wroth, and speaking out with a decision that should shame his brother, Judge Cox, told Mrs. Lockwood that her plea was probably good, but that it was a fraudulent one as regarded her standing as a lawyer, and that unless she withdrew the plea he would not allow her to practice as if she were a single woman. Mrs. Belva Loekwood, according to the local journals, "talked back" at the Judge after the fashion of her sex, but she withdrew her 'plea all the same. Justice Mc Arthur is a sensible man. If a woman can be "husband lees" enough to be a practicing lawyer, she ought to consider herself "husbandless" whenever her professional debts are concerned. V. . World.

Exhausting the Timber Supplies. The now well-known fact is that we are rapidly exhausting, largely by reckless and improvident wante, our supplies of Umber in the Northern States. The demand for it increases at the rate of thirty per cent, a year, snd even thoe J who are interextea in sign prices ana immediate sales of what U left of it admit that in twenty years or sooner building timber will be extremely sc arce, and that in roaiy parts of the country, yet supplied in part from their own soil, it will have entire v disaDoeared. It is I stated on good authority that more than G6,uuu estabiisaments, employing w,000 persons, and wring material to the value of over .0,OUO,000 a year, are engaged in the United States In manufacturing articles entirely from wood, in addition to 8.0UO,OOO persons partly employed on wood or using that material yearly to the value of 6.000,000. No country can be or ever has been despoiled of her timber and flourish. United States Kcunomut. Sueeess la Farming. To be sucoemful in farming one must always be careful in selecting his seed, use good judgment In selecting animals, keep his farm well cultivated and free from weeds, keep fences in order, and take good care of tools, lie must also, as an exchange says, be one who keens out of debt, and has a contented mind ; sends his children to school, and takes one or more good papers devoted to farm and stock interests. A farmer who never reads is like a machine that Is never oiled it wears. He wears himself out, exhausts his land, and dies poor. One good suggestion found in a paper or book is worth to men more than half a life of trials, when not made Intelligently. Ikm't he afraid to read and acknowledge that you can learn from others. No one knows it all. Somebody knows something you don't. Let your aim be to acquire everythins anyone can teach yon, and it will pot money in your purse, brains in yout head, and influence in your presence. The ancient device of pouring oil upon the troubled waters w to be revived. A Mr. Shields of Perth has invented a piece of apparatus for the smoothing of broken seas by means of oil, and a few days ago the contrivance was tried at I'eterbead, in Scotland, with considerable success. The oil was convened to the North Harbor entrance by means of a pipe 200 yards long. The pumping soon took effect on a piece of rough water. The oil spread and ran. dcred the harbor quite smooth over large area. THE XASOm JIBW YMMF. January si, MSI. CATTT.15 Kxporta....... SS SS S) M (KrTTlJN-Middlina. ....
