consequences of which wo have neither

the time nor space to notice. It isoucot

the most serious obstacles in the way of

our success in the countrv. It is the

cause of a large portion of the disadvan

tages under which we labor. Its direful

effects are severely felt iu a majority of

country schools. It is impossible to

grade or classify a school properly where

it exists. It imposes upon the teacher

much extra labor to interest the irregular

pupils, and to assist them to keep up

with their class. It causes an abate

tneut of interest in those who do attend regularly, aud demoralizes the affairs of

a school generally.
