Maine ge not only behind tbe re-iK-itMtot'betitiKl tbe ballot? cast, and lite Uwt and eejr men were elected who liad t recalrW cm a majority of the oaiHKii cast. In Maine, m mi Indiana, the law requires that all the officers of tke election board should sign the certilicate of the returns, a4 It is no excuse for their faiftrre'to de, that the printer had not prHtiec a riuea line lor meir stgnwuros. Tliey wight to know tbe kw, ad if the ruled line ws not there, and they couldn't wile their names without one, peneik and a -straight rule are plenty, as well r fi Aldermen in Maine. No return, would be counted in Indiana, for any omce, wWck was not properly sipiea oy an the officers or the election board. But above and beyond all this caviling about Irawn loems np the grand prmr t a , - vipte iiwi ARnnn iiuenies are 10 ee iweserred, if at all, by giving to the people, of all ckeeee, at the polls, the chance of an HHiatimidated and free expression of their will, and the after carrying out of that wilt. And it Is now a notorious fact that the so-called intimidation of the negroes at the South sinks to utter insignificance, and dwindles in comparison as the small mole hill to the highest peak of the Andes, when put in juxtaposition with tbe arbitrary control of their hands by tbe despotic owners of the large manufactories and other corporations of Maine and the other Xew England States. These hands, with families dependent on their labor for sustenance, are boldly given to understand if they do not vote as the owners dictate, they will be thrown out of employment, and a Congressional investigation has shown that the eleetiea? in that pert of tke country have thus been materially inlueaeed by these owners tor years. There k no question in the minds of any well informed person that in Maine the Democrats and Green backers, new called the Fasten kts, com pose akrge majority of the people of the State, and the investigation in the Fu-

Fr the Jir Cricr. Mnrhm Township Institute. The teachers of Mariou township assembled in Institute at Schneider's school-house, January 17th, I80. As our lion. County Superintendent, G. C Cooper was with hs, but our worthy I'resident not liein? present, the hoHiewa called to order by Mr. Cooper and work resumed at onc. On motion, Mr. Felix Schneider, trustee of id towusbip, was chosen Chairman for the ensuing term, and Joseph Scbwartzmiller was elected Secretary. Then Mr. Cooper taking the floor, presented to the audience tbe subject of Penmanship, principles and spacing of letters and derivation of principles, showing by illustrations every thing be longing to that subject so plainly that every member present remarked that they now fullv understood the 6ubiect of Penmanship, and all our readers are well aware that when Mr. Cooper takes hold of a subject, he understand it thoroughly, and knows how to give it lucid explanation. Physical Geography Mankind, was then presented by Jos. Schwartzmiller. On motion, Institute took a few minutes recess. IIou;e being called to order Mi Kate Schroering took the floor and drilled a clas in Grammar Adjectives. The branch is no easy subject to handle, and to handle it well with the systemic order with which Miss Scbocring did, few would have taken the trouble to stndy over in order to present it so well. As all were very much interested iH the subject, Mr. Cooper carried it out farther, and we can safely say, that we have never listened to a subject so well treated in a Township Institute. Mr. F. B. Mueller then took the floor, and in an address, made a masterly display of his knowledge of Education, wh ich was also continued by Mr. Cooper, and in which he expressed himself very wen satisnexi with our schools. On motion, Joseph Schwartzmiller was appointed to arrange a programme for next meeting. It was agreed that a copy of the proceedings be furnished the Jasper Courier aud Iluiitingburg Signal for publication.. Un motion of Felix bchneiuer, Insti tute adjourned, tatiffied that it bad done good work in a good cnHe, to meet again at Schneider's &chool-bou5C, Feb ruary 2 1st, 183. mOGKAMME TOR XKXT MEHTtNT..
