THK TKOUBLBS IX MA1NK. The Maine Logl-lature formally organized
oa the 7th. In the Iloiue, Assistant Clerk Glides called the certified roll of memlicre,
and 7 answered to their names. Eugeno Hale, Republican, stated that the names of certain elected memlrers were not on the roll, and moved that they be included. Otyectioas were t made, and the Clerk refused 'to put the motion, whereupon the Republicans, with the exception of Hale, withdrew in 'a ImmIv. Upon notification that the Hott.e was then ready to organize, Governor Gareelon appeared and qualified the member. He announced that 7S members, being a quorum, had taken and subscribed the necessary oath, and were regularly and duly constituted the House of Representatives. Thin announcement was received with applautc from the outside. Governor Gareelon said he would now put Into their hands the opinion of the Supreme Court as well as the petition of the gentlemen from certain cities claiming teats, and invoked their careful consideration of the same. Three Fusionlstff, Sprout, Voter and Snow, refused to participate in the proceeding. The House then completed Its organization by the election of John C. Talbott as Speaker and Wingate E. Glhbs as Clerk. The Senate organked by the election of Fusion officer!. TheState-hotise was densely packed wRh spectators, but no disturbance occurred. Tbe Maine Republican assert lliat the puhlkhed affidavits of Swan and Harrltntn, declaring that money was paid Fusion members of the Legislature to prevent a quorum from appearing, are unsupported by evidence, aad challenge the opposition to produce the names of the Republicans alleged to have pakl the money. Xo event of Importance occurred In the Maine Legislature on the Mh, further than the appointment of a Joint select committee to investigate the alleged hrilery and Intlmkktiotiof members. throp was the man who paid him the money. Mr. Swan produced a draft
which he said he had purchased with the $1,000 as soon as it came into bk possession, and which he now declared himself ready to
turn over to White as he (Swan) had no
'claim upon It. A similar statement was
made by Harriman of Kennebttnk, who dis
played the hills he had received. Clark of Xobleboro said he had been approached
for the same purpose. Senator Blaine pubIkhed a card denying unequivocally the re
ports that be was concerned In or bad any
knowledge of any attempt to bribe mem
bers of the Legislature. The official term of Gov. Gareelon having explrod
by limitation, during the Interregnum Gen. Chamberlain, Commander-in-Chief of the military forces, temporarily assumed the direction of affairs Incident to the protection of State property.
Neither bouse of the Legislature bad a
quorum on the 10th, and after brief sessions both adjourned till Monday. James D. Lamson, President of the Senate, announced
that ho bad assumed the duties of Governor to ill the present vacancy
in that office, as authorized and required by law. Wallace R. White, charged by Swan and Harriman with paying them $ 1,000 each for purposes of bribery, puhlkhed a card declaring tho charges " absolutely, unqualifiedly and maliciously false" so far as they referred to him. Ho declines, however, to be Investigated by the, present House of Representatives, whom he terms tbe "co-conspirators of Swan and Harriman." President Lamson of tbe Senate having assumed tbe duties of Governor and been formally sworn In, on the 12th, Senator Ellk was chosen President pro torn. It appeared from tho report of the Committee on Gubernatorial votes that the four persons receiving tho highest number of votes and therefore eligible to tho Executive office- were Daniel F. Davis, Joseph L. Smith, Alonzo Gareelon and Blon Bradbury. But 00 mcmlers of tbe House were present and It adjourned without transacting any business. AlKHit 0 o'clock on the evening of tho 12th the Republican Senators and Representatives quietly proceeded to the Statc-hott-c and took possession of tho same without opposition. Upon learning that tbe movement was in progress, Acting-Governor Lamon proceeded to Gen. Chamberlain's headquarters and protested against hk permitting them to come In. Gen. Chamberlain k reported to have said In reply that be should permit them to come in and to May as long as they pleased." The Senate was then organized by the election of Joseph A. Locke, President, and a full set nf officers, alt Itepublicans. A quorum of 18 Senators was declared present, one of whom, however, Andrew R. Smith of Lincoln County, did not bold any certificate of election, but was declared elected " on the face of the returns." The House was called to ohler by Eugene Hale.
Eitthty-ivc members answered to their
names on roll call and were qualified, and six more alleged eountcd-out members were subsequently admitted by resolution. Geo. E. Weeks of Augusta was chosen Speaker,
A committee was appointed, to co-operate with a slmiHr committee of the Senate, to
ascertain the opinion of the Supremo Ju
dlcial Court as to the legality of the organization of the Legislature. The Fusion Legislature qtllctly assembled .In the State-house on the morning of the
i:ith, and as quietly adjourned without doing
any business. The Republican Legislature; oceupied the Legislative Chambers In the af- i tenioon and adopted a series of questions to submit to the Supremo Court, after which they adjourned to Saturday, the lTtb. .lasD. Lamson addressed a communication to Gen. Chamberlain, Commander-in-Chief, stating that he had entered upon the duties of Governor under critical circumstances and asking the latter If he was prepared to recognize hk authority. Gcu. Chamberlain replied that In the present attitude of affairs he could notrecognlze Lamson as Governor, but would hold fast to his place a a barrier against anarchy and bloodshed, and urge both parties to submit their claims to the highest legal tribunal. Recent investigations of tltc Postoffices authorities havo added several to the list of preposterous swindles which are carried on through tho mails. Under laws lately passed to break thenl up, more than a hundred fraudulent enterprises have been detected. A high sounding advertisement of a United States Syndicate, professing to havo been formed to aid tho Treasury to dispose of surplus bonds, is a prominent example of these cheats. In another case the advertisers promised to send a solargraph watch, described as inclosed in a neat metallic case, compact as a ladv's watch, furnished with a neat chain, and worn like any watch. It is, in fact, a l)CtJ $un dial, costing the dealers about nvo cents. The public can not be too careful in
mitktng purchases through tlitv Postoffice, from unknown, irresnonsilne ad
vertisers.
