And thought we we ne'er could part;
Each day and night my vigu Kepi, Nor from it e'er my memory slept. Hut killing fronts came o'er my viae And nipped the tender hud ; In spile of love or tender care It withered then and died : No other flower can bloom so fair, Or abed a radiance half no rare. key. Many teachers, when in the school
room, talk in a loud tone of voice. They
not only talk loud themselves, but manv
insist upon their scholars doing the same
thing, lne writer has been at schools,
where the teacher was drilling a class on
the lirst floor of the building, and he and the pupils could be distinctly heard on the
second floor. And when making short
addresses or speeches to the school, the
teacher could be distinctly heard at tbe
distance of one square. If the teacher
talks loud the pupils are apt to do the
same thing, and it is generally true, that
a loud talking teacher baa a noisv school
"As is tne teaciier, so is the school.' "Loud teacher, loud school." The teacher that governs a school host is the one that talks in a subdued tone of voice, aud makes but little (use about it. The
teacher's voicb should be just lond
enough to be heard distinctly ia every part of the room, when every thing is quiet and in good order, and no louder. And the pupils should be required to recite or speak just loud enough to be heard distinctly by the teacher, and the rest of the class, and no louder. The
conversational tone of voice is tne one that should be employed by both teacher
and pupil in all ordinary recitations; in
reading, the sentiment ot the piece will determine the character of the tone.
It is too often the cae that loadness is
mistaken for clearness of eimaciatioH and tlistinctness of pronunciation. Chil-j drcn should bo required to .ecak dis-
tiuctly, and to make all hear who nre cx-
pected to listen; but they should not be
illowctl to kawi.. if pupils are allowed
lo use a high key in speaking, they will
he inclined to use tt in reading, and it coon becomes monotonous to the car to hear a person read a piece on a key that is hisrher than the sentiment of the
piece require?. This loud, unnatural tone of voice, o frequently assnnu d by teachers and pupils, is ruining the reading of hundredsyea, thousand?, of children. Hush! Keep quiet! Saxam.
