confederates were to he on hand to take the horse off, and the heme accomplices

to assist in searching for them. For fear a murder wiflJp committed at Mr. Beadle', itJ1"J"Teonel best to attempt to arrest the bovine party at Jtobiafson's granary, and so a Humber of men were concealed in it, and Kr. Kobinwin iiinseir took a lot ofatrov frem a neigbhoring slack and laid it down by the iside of the granary, with tbe. expectation of concealing himself umler it, and when the thieves bad entered the granary, closing the ddor and fastening it on them, while tha citizen inside would make the arrests. At the appointed time a wagon wm in readiness to convey the whftat , and the party visited the

granary, it being arranged t Hat McCor-

mick was to keep watch outside Willi a revolver, while Thomas, Garling, and

Camnoe II carried out the wheat. But

the etraw pile attracted the attention of

Thomas, and he went to invetigate it,

kicking It, and finding something inside,

jumping on it, which wm too wueh for

arrests may lead to the exposure of the rest of the hand, and their punishment.

t - Baii.koad Extknsio.v. "We are reli

ably informed that at a meeting of the

directory of the Nahville and (;hat

tauooffa rallwav. which was held at

Louisville, Kv .'on last Monday, and at which Mr. G." ft Eager, of Boston. Vice

President of the Cincinnati and Rock

port railroad, was present, arrangements were entered into lietween them, for

carrying the business of the Chattanooga road north over the Honk port road, and

that the Itocknort road i to be coropiet

ed to Mitchell or Worlhiiigton. hy the

time the Chattanooga road is completed from Nashville to Owensboro. This

will put Jasper on one of tbe great

thoroughfare for business of the country,

and we congratulate the managers of tbe

Jtockport road on their goon lortunc in

securing the arrangement, steps wu

from the townshlns from here to

County SurMtjfTissoKST. Tbe

County Board of Education on Monday

elected Prof. Geo. C. Cooper, County Superintendent, hy a vote of 7 for Cooper, 3 for Brundick, and 2 for Sweeney. The selection is an excellent

to sav that, if the Spring fetation route was built, it would be of no uso either to us or to Kvansville. No uso to us. because exhorbilant rates would uompull us to go elsewhere to have our irui&portatiou done, and because there are no wholesale bouses in Kvansville of an v consideration lo Minnlv our

jobbing trade; aud of no uxo to Kvansville, because of these consideration

Ev'HMsjVillc could not reach or ho aule to bundle our products. After listening to this stitiin of argument for a short

time, vour correspondent, came to tne

conclusion, mm, u iubw n eiu mi tou,

the excursion party might possibly be on a "fool's ci rand", and as soon as

breakfast was over next inorninu:, we

struck out over the various purl of the city, to investigate tbe matter, and with

the following results: Ve round in the city II foundries, 10 wholesale dry-

goods stores, la wholesale groceries, lu

w ho usalu U'jot and .shoe stores, i cotton

factory, 3 plotv liicionm, i steam power

furniture factories, 2 steam power waon

shops, '& Stettin power carriage fliops.

3 Kluam power marble worKs, & mimm

piwer cooper shops, 1 steam power wah boird factory, 5 extensive saw mills, making large quantities of tbu very bst poplar, oak ami walnut lumber, ami

number ot other imuistrie. Mr.

Ivratz showed us the be-it agricultural

engine we ever saw, ami uiiormeii us

that it was wholly uu own luveiuiou.

This shows that Kvansville is not desti

tute of either enterprise or invcuiive ingenuity, as Mr. Shaiiktiu would have

us think. The abundance uu cheapness

of coal and timber at Kvansville, con-

sidered with its favorable locality, would

make it the leading tHauufacturing city

of the West, if she had some additional

rail road facilities, and the citizens ot

Dubois aud Spencer c unties cannot

afford to loose the opportunity ot con

nection, by rail via the Spring Station

route. UBSEKVKE.

ExcURStox Noteh. We bail intended

publishing some notes of the Kvansville excursion, but our correspondent "Ob

server" has done the work so well that

it is needless. The excursio. lists from

Jasner were all much pleased, and au

informal meeting was held on the train,

with Mr. M. Friedman as Chairman,

aud J. M. Deinderfer and A. M. Sweeney as Secretaries, and resolutions of thanks

to tbe officers of the railroad, steamers

Grey Eagle and Fashion, anil hotels St.

George and Sherwood, passol, and pub

lication requested, but we did not re

ceive the proceedings in time for publicationthe Secretaries, we presume,

both were too "tired" to write them out.

The ladies on the excuriiou added

life aud gaiety to it, and were welcome

aiders. Mrs. Y. requests us to say that

Mr, SwiRt displayed fine taste in his

selection of a boquet, principally iron

weed and horse thistle.

The bend was a good addition on the

boat, and the dancers were happy.

The business men of Kvansville say, nearly universally, that they are in favor of the Spring Station route, and it will be put to a vote as soon as the necessary preliminaries are arranged, when we expect to sec a large vote in favor of it,
