THE BUKMK8K MOKKOK. UMparalbriad AtroMtUs at thm Maaaaer mt the frtHM aad tkatr Kclallvca, Tae following are wail advices giving the pertioulara of the massacre of the Bemeee Princes and their relatives: Kamooo, March IS. Tiw King's fears eontiasied to gain upon aim, as om after another of the Princea pined sway and died in tb frightful undergrouad prisons of the Palace loathsome with filth, and never moved since these deas were conetruoted years ago. The fears of British intervention alone prevented him from putting them all to death month ago. Suddenly news of the disaster in Zululand reached Man daisy. That apparently decided him, and a work of cold-blooded butchery began which will hardly find a parallel ia history. At first the massacre was carried on according to the old Burmese wont. The victims were led out of their colls in twos and threes, brought to Thekha to the King, and disposed of in the ordinary Buddhist fashion. The head of the victim waa lied down to his anklos, and a blow on the back of the neck
from a heavy club put him out of pain. Sat this soon proved too mild a specta ole for the fiendish mind of Theebau. ' The Fhonghai Prince, whose insolenthearing English visitors to landalay will remember, on being brought to do reverence to his young brother (the King is' past twenty-one years) profeeeed an utter scorn for what eould be done to him, and was flogged truculent Mekhaya Prince, who used to to acain. xne late xtng'a son, the look upon all foreigners as so much dirt nnder his feet, turned craven, and was taunted and driven to madness before receiving the blow, which only half sunned him, when his writhing body was thrown into the gigantic trench dug to receive the victim. The massacre was carried on in a leisurely fashion, extending over several days, fiendish ingenuity being taxed to the utmost to devise fresh horrors. Moungoke, the Governor of Rangoon when it was capturea by the iintisb in icwv, nu sun buu uiuuiu mint nuu ganpowder, a light was applied, and he was then flung into the trench to be stifled by the bodies of succeeding vietorn u: j ......l cii i :.t.

WTO. ' from tea Demaetto Moataly for May. Coatidariag that fashion k poised npoa a pivot, and has bo more stability thaa the wind, it must be regarded as fortunate that human taetos are yielding and easily transferred. Tbe pettier, scarcely more than hinted at three months ago, ha developed like politician's pet measure, and take He place without so mnoa as hesitating for the favor of acceptance. It is simply in fashion, and the rest roes without saying. The extent to which the panier is represented is left entirely to the individual; for it ie chiefly, and, in a large proportion of oaees, produced by drapery, pleats, and trimmings, it interferes but little with models or designs. Basques are finished off with wKe revere aad high pockets which enlarge the hips, or, in the case of grenadines, they are supplied with a drapery sewed in under the veet-front quite smoothly, und lifted at the aides in two or three curtained or festooned loops. Upon the back of a grenadine basque a pleated width is added as an extension to the center, and this is looped into a
aanler, trimmed with lace, ribbon, or eta. Fine crinoline is required to stiffen amer draperies ot irrenadine and tin. sue, also for man v faucv fabrics of crane. or delicate silk and wool. A handsome basque for the above mentioned materials has pleated centers both at, the Tront and back, and the sleeve i$nade to correspond. The general outline of j J"'? g3ure:"tt th? Bid9 are cut up high above the hips in order t? snow rae loopea drapery of the overskirt beneath. Vests are seen on almost every basque this season, and when this is not included in the design proper, the center-front of the basque is filled up with a showy Jabot of lace, which may match the trimming of the drees, if that is lace, or it may be a detached article of lingerie. The first named style is most admired. Prince? e dresses, more than other designs, may be conveniently provided with panier effects. The drapery is easily arransred t. t l li " j 0 . Polonaise?, so fur from being rejected favorites this season, are much admired for their adaptability to new ideas of drapery. Those that are originally closed in front are sometimes left lua. auove in . asm, n(i hantulna , ua 0usrrn .,.,. r OUSS IbUi SiO UAbl a garniture or draping; ladies wear them ' as they are, quite as frequently as otherwise, and it must not be supposed that uwTme uu." -"Sw "J vneuwi ui uy icvuiunuu iu i&Kiuuii nas laxen l?lace bccus0 8 r foci of puffed drapery is suggested, for unless the Panler 13 wcoming to tho figure, it is by no means adopted. Overskirts arc now sharing the general liking for handsome draperies with trimmed skirts which always have the advantage as regards convenience. The newest designs are exceedingly dressy, and show quito mends overskirts which are draped in dependently of each other on the sides. For instance, the right side will show its depth taken up by pleats laid in a cluster, while the leftside has simply lines of shirring uniting the sides and back. A etylish design for grenadine mixed with damassee silk has panels, similar at both smee, ana the tront is made dressy with widths of grenadine earned across, in nipiuju ior grenadines ana sou sum mer silks, and fancy crepe-like mixtures called mummy-silks. Skirts are occupying more than their ordinary share of attention this spring. Trimmed ikirts prepared for the street are not over three yards in width, and the same rule applies to house dresses. Walking skirts, when plain, are made from two to two and a half yards wide; the kilt-pleaded addition to the yoke of such a model affording nil the room that is required. Vests separate from the basque appear to he neeeseary this season, and these are of every imaginable material.
i HINTS Ffft TNI MOU&CIML. Dried beef eaa he out oft with a plane ia the thinnest shavings, aad, is atteh nieer than with any ether method. Pare white eestile is a little expensive for washing fabrics, but its purity preserves the color of silk baaderehiets, ribbons, etc., wonderfully. In tbe washing of children's stockings a great help will be found ia using wooden stocking forms on which to dry them. You can obtain them at the stores, or have them made to order withoat much expense. One of the infallible rules of knowing a careless housekeeper is observing where she keeps the matches. If they are scattered over every shelf in the house, be sure she is earelees; but if she has a match-box in nearly every room, there must be a different decision. Cup-puddings: Take 1 quart of milk, 5 yelks and 1 white of egg, 6 tablespoonfuls of flour, and about i pound of butter, and as much sugar as required ; bake in cups, beat the whites of eggs and powdered sugar to a froth, and
. jjuo uu iujj , serve wuu aauce. For washing red table linen, use , tepid water, with a little powdered borax, which serve to set the color: ..u .i. i ; j tit ' using very little soap; rinse in tepid water, containing a little boiled starch ; hang to dry in the shade, and iron when almost dry. There should always be hanging above the sink and dish -pan a pocket of wood containing the bowl of a broken brittania spoon, and a small knife about 4 inches long, made of very hard wood, and sharpened at the comers. The spoon bowl will be found serviceable for cleaning and scraping kettles, and tbe knife for a multitude of nses. Clothes-pin bags are usually made with a shirstring run in the top, and are always a nuisance. They are much nicer hemmed round the top and hung up by means of a loop. A basket with a wire hook fastened on the handle to hang on the line, or a box with cords fastened at the corners, and finished with a hook to allow hanging on and slipping along the line, is nicer still. Baked Rice Pudding: Boil together , in a saucepan l pint oi milk and the grated peel of a small lemon. In another 'saucepan boil a teacupfol of rice until tender, and, when done, drain off all the . water. Beat 4 eggs till light, stir them ' in the milk, with 1 ounce of fresh but- , ter, a of a pound of stoned raisins, a 1 4 of a pound of sugar, a little grated ' nutmeg, and 2 tablespoonfuls of roseI water. Add tbe rice. Stir all well tof ether, and bake in a buttered tin i an our. Potato Yeast without Hops: Having noticed a number of receipts for making yeast in your paper, writes a housekeeper, all which require hops, I oiler mine, which will be found more simple and a decided improvement on the old method of making hop yeast. Pare and grate 4 large potatoes, over which pour 3 pints cf boiling water, stirring thoroughly. Let it boil slowly five minutes ; then add 1 teacupful of sugar and 1 of salt. After they have entirely dissolv ed, empty into a vessel to cool. When a little more than lukewarm, add a large teacupmi ot yeast, and put it m a warm place to rise. When sufficiently risen, . it will have a light, frothy appearance, I and will remain sweet for weeks if kept in a oooi piace. Ha-nesiHjc an Elephant. An elephant keeper In Philadelphia tried the other day to get a venerable animal named Old Chief to draw a wagon. The Times of that city thus re ports the result: "Old Chief didn't object much while tbe harness was being placed on him. tie merely blinked steadily, and now and then east a glance at his persecutors, as though he would say that his time would come. His actions puzzled tbe keepers not a little, and they began to suspect that he was brewing some mischief. At length they f;ot him hitched to the wagon. Tfaegapng spectators looked on with the deepest interest. Chief manifested no sign that he was going to move. The trainers put their hooka into his trunk and began to pull on him. Chief snorted a little and shook his head disapprovingly. They pulled harder. Chief snorted and flapped his ears like the roofs of two houses coming together. They gave his trunk a jerk. Chief lifted his ears with a veil and made 'a dash forward. jerking the trunk free of the hooks and proiectine it out before him like a bavonet, tearing through the yard with the wagon at his heels, scattering the affrighted spectators in every direction. ue went tearing Uiaeonallv across the long yard, taking in a pile of tent-poles in his course and making straight for the gap in the lower end of the inclosure. As he dropped the wseon over tho pile of timber a party of half adozen, who had retreated there for safety, ran for their lives. One man tried to jumn a six-foot wall and fell back to the ground, white as a sheet. When he looked up he saw the wagon, a comBlete wreck, not ten feet from him, and Id Chief, with the broken karness clinging to his body, standing wedged in between the corner of the wall and the corner of the stable. He bad knocked out the whole corner of the stable, scattering 40 or fiO brieks on the ground at his feet. After a good ileal of trouble, the keepers succeeded in backing him out of his tight position, and be was sent back to the stable, still snorting and del ant. No moderate estimate will cover the ameaat el punishment Chief wUl have to receive hefere be is red need to Mbjtotie."
