Death efaDeg Detective. "Allen Pinkerton," the dog detective of the St. Joseph police force, is dead. Hundreds oar people who for tbe past eight years have stn a queer looking little black dog, with white hair around hU neck and a bushy tail that curled over his back, will read this announcejmnl witn surprise and genuine regret. The first known of the dog is that 10 jours ago be mysteriously turned up at the resilience of John O'Connor, where he remained for about two years. He prowled about the darkest corners in tbe alleys and whenever an intoxicated man was found, a yelp or two was sufficient to bring up the nearest oflfcer to look into the matter. Ms well known voice was relied on with as much conidence as the rattle of a policeman's whistle, and it was always answered. At roll-call he waa as prompt as any of the men, and on suck occasions he was the pet of the office. He had the moit wonderful ig&city, and appeared to almost comprehend the orders of the chief. Nearly every lady who rieited tbe morning market 'knew the dog, and spoke kindly to him, while the market women petted and caressed him whenever he came about, aad always had a dainty morsel with which to tiekle his palate. Of late years Allen has been growing feeble, and for the past six months or a ycT be has been able to travel with hie old associates but little. Since his health became poor he has made his home with ex-Policeman James Hudgens, at the corner of Sixteenth and Jule Streets, and has bad the utmost attention paid him bv tbe whole family. On Thursday laet Allen was taken sick, aad notwithstanding every thing was done for the poor dumb animal that man could do, he calmly died on Tuesday. During tbe laet two days aad nights that he lived Mr. Hndgese, who more than once while patrolling his lonely night watch real, laed the value of bis cheerful presence, nursed him continually, and when his death wae announced every member of the force felt the deepoot regret.
