Last summer, aowever, tut came trora lowa I as ne sayj, in tne cnaracter of a pvacemaker, when his father and brother were captured and tried for some of their misdeeds. He says he succeed- , ed, and at the same time he won the heart of Miss Moliie McLure. When the new vear came, he returned to claim Ins bride, wa? duly married, and, after a week of merry-making, started in a , two-hotse conveyance to the Ohio River, to take a steamer and return to Iowa with his youn wife. He reached s Vauceburg'late in the day on Tuesday, and drove to the house of the jailer, who is a relative, and asked to be allowed to stay there until the steamer T elegxaph came down the river. The jailer, knowing there was a reward for him, warned him that it would not be safe. "Very well." said Underwood. "let them try to take me. There'll be be a first-class funeral if they do." He then started down the river" to the next landing, the town of Concord, 12 miles distant. The sheriff was notified of his destination, and at once made arranirements for his ctmture, He detailed a loree to go down on the telegraph, and himself and three others started ou horseback on the road taken by Underwood and his party. About 5 o'clock , at night, in a little" ravine where the road" makes a sudden bend, Sheriff . Warder ami his partv suddenly found themselves upon Umferwood, who had stopped to water hia horses. The moonlight was dim, but the Sheriff was certain of his game. " He called upon Underwood to surrender. The desperado, who had alighted and was standing between his horses, want- - ed to know who ordered him to surren1 der. The Sheriff replied that he was the heriffof the county, and demanded the surrender of Je!e Underwood, whom he wonld protect. Underwood declared that his name was Baker, and drawing his revolvers, one in each hand, was preparing; to meet the four men who t were there to arrest bim. His father-in-law and Mr, Elijah Vest, who were with him, were unarmed, and busied themselves in comforting his wife, who was screaming with terror. His defiant altitude led the Sheriff's posse to adopt summary measures, A gun was leveled at Tnderwood and discharged, but by a quick movement he struck the barrefup so that the charge went over his head, . Then, with a terrible oath, he presented one of his revolvers to the breast of , .John Rugbies, one of the Sheriff's posse, ' and tired, the ball piercing his : heart aad killing him insfantly, Upon this the Sheriff himself fired a pistol, the ball striking Underwood in the wrist and ranging upward to the elbow. Upon receiving this wound Underwood fled, but not until he received a charge of buckshot in his shoulder and a oall in bis left thigh. In the melee, Mr McLure, his father-in-law, ' received a ball in his side, that made a wound supposed to be mortal. Underwood made his way to a school-hou-e near by, and crept "under it. The Sheriff and his men brought the dead body of Ruggles Into the school-house, and then Underwood crept out and started away. He was so severely Injured, hower, that ke supposed himself mortally hurt, and stopped at the house nf Imis Uugirles, where he frankly told that he had Killed a man. Iluggles took him in, disarmed him. and sent fr the Sheriff, i who soon after came and took the desperate prisoner to Concord, where his terrified bride was permitted to care for him. Younjr Ruggles who was killed, was the only support of his widowed mother, and lived at Vanceburgh. Stre the Old Paper. i Never throw away old paper. The town of Gritlin is supported by buffalo hunters, and is their general rendezvous in this section. The number of hunters on the ranges this season is estimated at l,5w. We'saw at Griffin a plat of ground of about four acres covered with buffalo hides spread out to dry, besides a large quantity piled up for shipment. These hides are worth in thi? place from $1 to $l.Co each. The generally accepted idea of the exciting chase in'buffalo hunting is not the plan pursued by the men who make it a regular business. They use the needle-gun with telescope, buy" the powder by "the keg, their lead in bulk, and the shells, and make their own cartridges. The guns in a party of hunters are used by only one or two men, who say they ususallv kill a drove of thirty or forty buffaloes on one or two acres of ground. As soon a? one is killed the whole herd, smelling the blood, collect around the dead body, snutltng and pawing up the ground, and uttering a singular noise. The hunter continues to shoot them d.r a, I7g he c re-aiH conceal. ed, or until the last animal "bttes the dust." The buffalo pays no attention to the report of the pin, and flees only at sight or scent of his enemy. The others of the party then oc-upy themselves in 44 peeling." Some of these have bv-onie so skillful they offer to bet they can skin a five or six-year-old buli in five minutes. The meat is also saved and sent to market, and commauds a good price.
