I hoy feci that they are their own mistresses, know just what are their nrcscnt ills, and fear that those thoy might lly to in marrying arc worse. But, though all this may bo true, if tho right sort of lover conies along, and tries to convince a schoolmarm so fortilied by sound arguments against matrimony, that she would be happier as his wife than as a single woman, we will wager that ho will batter down the walls and carry the fort. Yet so far as material comfort is concerned, she might do better to withstand the assault. As to schoolmarms assuming an attitude of superiority, perhaps our correspondent mistakes them. Their manner may bo one acquired in their profession, and not mean that they think they are wiser than other people, though it so imnrosses some observers. It is euge, nicy iiiaygi owiu nine ici iiuuk they can teach every body; but if they aro brought into frequent association with people who aro their intellectual betters, they will learn after a while that they do not know as much as they think thoy do, and will draw in their horns. Very likely the men about these school inarms aro their inferiors in nominal education, and they may bo really inferior otherwise. In such cases tho teachers aro unfortunately placed, for it is bettor to associate with persons who know more than you do than with those who know loss, as then you will keep down a self-conceit which is always offensive in its manifestations. Still, if a man is not actually inferior to a school-teacher, ho needn't bo afraid of her. There are none of them who know it all, though thoy may think thoy do. ARtkr iMftrtrMaMt Um TcliyhiM. Slnco the public were first hMtrifld by the exhibitions of the telephonic in ventloiw of Messrs. (iray, Edteon, and Hell, says t)i Detroit Free Press, nearly every electrician in this country ha been endeavoring to solve the problem of a telephone which would talk directly from a battery, thereby making it possible to communicate over long distances, and to repeat tho acoustical vibrations from one line to another as often as desired. This problem haa at leugth been solved by G. 1$, ltiohmond, a dentist and student of science residing in this city, aud in so simple and satisfactory a manner as to seemingly defy improvement. It has been tested by several scientific trcntlcmcn. among them Prof. Ii. C. Kcdzie, of the Michigan Agricultural College, who pronounces Mr. Richmond's invention a valuable and scientific discovery. We give tho following brief description of Mr. lMchmoiid's telephone from tlio model forwarded to tho United Statos I'atont-Ollicu through the mechanics' and inventors' agency at Detroit! A circular brass frame, about two inches in diameter, is secured in a perpendicular position, into the upper part of which is inserted a speakingtube, and to tlio lower part is secured a thin metallic diaphragm which can be tightened to a proper tension by means of thumb-screws. To tho center of this diaphragm is soldered a small platinum wire about an inch and a half long, projecting downward. Directly under this diaphragm, and inclosing the platinum wire, is a glass tube two inches long and about 0110 inch in diameter, with a hard rubber bottom. Into this bottom is fixed another plantinum wire, projecting upward through the centor of the glass tube, and reaching within about one-tliirty-seeond of an ineli of tlio platinum wire attached to the diaphragm. Tho glass tube is filled witli distilled water, tlio platinum wire attached to the diaphragm is connected with a battery, and the lower platinum wire attached to tho main line. There is now a constant current of electricity passing from the battery to tho main line by way of the platinum points, through tlio water. Tlio scientific fact on which Mr. Itichmond's discovery is based is that pure water oilers a resistance to tlio passage of a current of electricity over 2,000,000 times greater than platinum wire. Sue Miller's Chemical l'lvysics, p. ill. When a person speaks or sings into the speaking-tube, tlio diaphragm vibrates in unison with the voice, and the volume of water between the platinum points is alternately increased or diminished in unison with tlio vibration. It therefore follows that as tlio volume of
water between the platinum points is increased or diminished, currents of electricity of vary ingstrength are thrown into the main line in exact unison with whatever sound enters tho spoakingtube, and is conveyed over tlio line to the receiving-instrument, which is an electro-magnet and diaphragm of the ordinary construction for telephonic experiments. Tho entire instrument is perfectly simple in it construction, and the only wonder is that men of tho first ability should have labored so long and overlooked principles and facts witli which they must have been familiar, and which appear to be tho only avenue through which a successful solution of practical telephonic communication can bo reached. On tho occasion of our visit, the transmitting instrument and battery were located in tho oflico of Mr. Hielimond, and tlio receiver in another office several doors distant. Small copper wires, insulated, were used on the main line, and their was no tension, tho wires hanging on nails, and being coiled up carelessly in all shapes to get them out of the way, having been originally arranged for a much longer circuit. Tho battery was also very light, consisting of about 80 common water tumblers; yet wo distinctly heard talking and singing at the receiver, took it in short-hand, and repeated it to Mr. Richmond on his ' arrival at our end of the line, as we hud no transmitter, and consequently could not "talk back." .Mr. Kieiimomt claims for his telephone that it can be used equally as well as an ordinary telegraph and under the same conditions; either tho entire length of a lino or cut-off at any particular point, without impairing J tho distinctness of tho sounds 111 the least. It will soon bo tested to its .fullest capacity. Mr. Ricnmond calls ' his invention tlio 44 electro-hydro telc- , phone." I Seme Facts Abent Cholera Merbus. Cholera Morbus is now traveling through the country, ostensibly for its health, but really in the interest of Sorrow and Suffering. It lias been to Oil City, and having had a brief but spirited Interview with it. we desire to warn the public against it. Cholera Morbus doesn't say much. It appreciates the fact that actions spenk louder than a street merchant with a now kind of glue. It is quiet and unassuming, and allows its victim to make all the fuss. It is tho champion wrestler of the world, catch-as-eatcH-can, or any other hold, and as a prize-lighter is to bo avoided. It lias no respect for the rules of tho 1'. 11., and will strike below the belt nine times out often. Without a word of warning it will catcli a man in the stomach, ami double him up quicker than the kick of a mule. If tho victim bo a short man.ho will roll np liko a doughnut. If ho bo a tall man, ke will fly together like a watch spring, la this condition he is of no earthly use, unless as a worm in a distillery. A man rolled up like a thread on a spool can't bo expected to do much work. But to hoar him groan and complain and carry on in one way and another, you would
think he did more hard work for hm wage than any other mum on the face of the earth. In this condition he will do ftlmoet any thing. He will roll over the Door like a hoop-snake, to the infinite amueement of the neighbors' children, who are doubtless peeping through the blinds. And to hear him yell for the camphor, the mustard planters, the turpentine, his wife and mother, and all the doctors this side of the Rocky Mountains, is enough to move tlic stones of Home to pity. Rut it doetm't move the cholera morbus. Becaueo the cholera morbus is a stayer. Every time the victim yells, say for aqua fortis, the cholera morbus might bo heard to reply: 44 O, I'll give you aqua fortis, you miserable worm!" and then it thumps him in the bowels until lie prays for the rocks and hills to tumble in upon him. He does this because he realizes that, compared witli tho cholera morbus, the rocks and hills will sit. ..3 lightly upon him as an alpaca coat. '1 Iktc is nothing too mean for Cholera Morbtio to do. It will take a man of the build of Carl Schurz, tie a bow knot in his middle, and offer to sell him for a neck-tic. Avoid it as you would tho tax collector. Oil Cily Derrick.
