trtksaigktlR tk East. The rortohestsr (N. Y.) Jour ml, says thst lisrgh and his iiimiRiie society have driven cook-fights Rlmost otf this island and out of the surrounding countios of thin Statu, and that the town of Greenwich (Conn.) has becoie the headquarters of a regiment of the raisers, fanoiera, bottom and fighters of game cocks. Thu Journal's invisible ronorter has ascertained the particulars of a doiien recent fight, which it gives, with the names of thu prominent abettors. It thou tolls its readers something about the "manly art" of slaughtering these poor birds. It says : If the cock is over weight, he is by medicine rapidly reduced to the required point, is shut up all day in a barrel without feed, and at night brought out and fed in a room, with a light kept burning all night, to accustom him to the light.and exercised in lighting othur fowls nightly, to give him the proper training, and after about ten days and nightH of such moral and intellectual culturo" and home training," he is ready for the pit to "battle to the death," to be killed hlmnelf or kill his fellow. Tho time and place being agreed upon, and all the preliminaries arranged, tho greatest secrecy is observed to balllo the olllccrs of tho la. The fowls are carried in bags, often for milee by their owners, ana by railroad for a distance of fifty miles in some cases. Arriving upon tho ground or building at about midnight, a rough incloeure of boards is made about ten feet square and nearly two feot in height. Tho cocks are then taken by the heelers who cut oil' their "spurs" dowu to tibout half an inch of their legs, and while smarting and bleeding they are burnt with a rod hot iron to stop the tlowof blood. A piece of chamois skin is then bound on and long I steel gaits iron ivvo 10 lurce incites long with a point as sharp as it needle arc bound firmly on with waxmi onds over tho stump. The birds arc then by tho "hoeleis" clipped of their hackle, saddle, breast and tail feathers, and thus shorn of their beauty, arc put in tho pit by tho heeleM who are their seconds, "bottle holders," spongers and managers throughout tho fight, until the death of their " champion" or his fellow relioves him from the charge. Death generally takes place in about flvo or ten minutes at farthest. As soon as the fowls are put in tho pit and catch a glimpse of their antagonist they make for each other and the battle commences amid the shouts and cheers and laughter of the mongrel crowd of well droesed, wealthy, seem to bo respectable, ' native and foreign element, with a o.ioice sprinkling of niggers, gin-mill loafers and politicians, dead-boats and bummers of the sur sharks and dock rats of New York City. Imagine such a mixed throng as this crowding around to see the dying struggles of these noble birds shoulder to shouldor, and cheek to cheek in loving, brotherly embrace, straining their eyes and ears, mounted on each other's shoulders, oftontimes breathing an atmosphere of smoke, stench, bad whisky, old pipes, butts of old cigars, foul breaths, and fouler oaths and words and obscene jests, and you only need the smell and contact of brimstone to make this picture of a cock-fight one of the "Devil's own." Tho long, sharp steel gaffs worn by theso birds soon wound each other and cover them with blood, until, smarting with pain, thoy madly rush and make desperate lunges at each other's heads and eyes with these swords of death, until they are driven through to the hilts, and death ensuos in a moment. A fight rarely lasts over eight or ten minutes, in many cases scarcely a minute, tho first thrust of the staffs killing in some cases. As mauy as twenty or thirty noble birds, images of which for years have been mounted upon many a church spire throughout this Christian land, are cruelly killed by each other, and their torn and bleeding carcasses thrown out to the dogs almost before Hie is ex tinct and their own murderous gaffs are cut off of the dying gladiator and fastened in turn upon a "fresh fowl," to murder bin fellow in turn, to el oat the appetite and satisfy the fiendish love of torture and put the coveted greenbacks in the pockets of the angelic throng. Hundreds of dollars thus change hands nightly, money in many cases taken from working men and those whoso families need every dollar to live in theso trving times. One of the most noted cock fiehta of tho season took place at Mamaroncck a while ago, in a farm-house owned by one of tho parties, in tho day time. There were gathered mostly tho woalthy sports of Now York and vicinity with a good representation from Greenwich. To guard against surprise from Mr. March and his ofllcors, about twenty guards with muskets were hired as sentinels. Tho fiehtiae was continued all day and into tho night, and thousands of dollars wore lost and won. hovers wealthy men from this placo and vicin ity wt-ro badly bitten. No regiments encamped in au onomy's country over night were better protected by a con tinuoiiH line of surrounding sentries than these high-toned sports, Hv a svstoni of signals they could be warnei! In time to put every thing away, and when the officers came upon them they would only he a company of " innocent lambs" on a Sunday teacners- piomoin the bracing air of the country. '- - - On the 29th, Norman McQualg shot and killed Jas. U. Jackson, ageu uu and i s aon. aged 21. at a ranch on Horso Creek, 30 miles north of Choy

MINT rOK THE MOUtHEMOL. J$lly CVtte. Yelks of i eggs, 1 oap of cream, 1 of sugar, flavor with lemon; salt and soda Cure for (fripb-vine jSitMW.M. Chatot, a Frenchman, recommends common table-salt a an antidote for oidium, or grape-vine disease. He says that his ves and grapes were covered for scwe years with a fungus-like substance, and that last spring he sprinkled a handful of salt about the roots of each vine. The etleot was marvelous, the vines grew luxuriantly, and bore an abundance of grapes entirely free from the fungus of oidium. 2b l'rcvtnt Catching Cold. Tho mistake is often made of taking great care to put r extra wraps and coats when preparing for out-door exorcise. This is not always necessary in robust persons. Sufficient heat to prevent all risk of chill is generated in tho body by exercise The care should be taken to retain sufficient clothing aftor exercise and when at rest to prevent the heat from passing out of the body. Indeed, persons very often catch chills from throwing off extra clothing after exorcise, or from sitting about in garments tho material of which Is not adapted to prevent the radiation of heat from the body. Linen and cotton underclothing, when moistened by perspiration, parts with heat very rapidly, whereas flannel and silk, being non-conductors, prevent tho rapid loss of heat. To Treat Felons. 'Elder Evans, of tho Lebanon (N. Y.) Shakers, says: " For the past 10 years wo havo treated folons with hot water, and with unerring success. No cutting, no blistering, no any thing, but immersing the finger, hand, or oven the whole arvn if necossary, in water as hot as can be borne, until the pain is gone and tho core is loosened and drawn from the bone. When rusty nails have produced wounds, the same courso has been pur
sued. If oh hand or foot, keep it in lot water." ' How to Treat Insect Hlinns.X writer in tho London Garden gives the following hints on this subject; The pain caused by the sting of a plant or insect j is the result oi a certain amount oi auiu poison injected into the blood. The first thing to be done is to press the tube of a small key firmly on tho wound, moving tho key from side to side to facilitate tho expulsion of the sting and accompanying poison. The sting, if J eft ih the wound, should ue eareiuuy extracted, otherwise it will greatly increase tho local irritation. The poison of stings being acid, common sense points to the alkalies as the proper means of cure. Among the most easily procured remedies may be mentioned soft soap, liquor of ammonia (spirits of hartshorn), smelling salts, washing soda, quicklime made into a p-ste with water, lime water, the juice of an onion, tobacco juico, chewed tobacco, bruised UOCK leaves, loinaio juicu, wouu aasiea, tobacco ashes, and carbonate of soda. Baklna Meats. Baking is a more economical mode of cooking than roast ing, especially in small families whero economical stovos or ranges with side ovens are used. In baking there is less oss of weight than in roasting, as the oint is less dried. Care should be taken that tho floor of the ovea is not too much heated or the fat maybe burnt, which causes a bad flavor. A groat advantage in baking is that It re quires loss attention man roasting, ana that potatoes or a batter or Yorkshire pudding can be cooked under the meat. This latter maybe made by taking four tabiespoonmis oi nour anu ruoumg them into a smooth batter with a pint of milk which has previously had a well-beaten egg mixed with it. If eggs are abundant, 2 or 3 may be employed th advantage, the quantity oi nour being lessened. The milk and egg must be added gradually, the batter being rubbed until uniformly smooth after each addition. A Care lsr B aliases. Persons afllicted with baldness will be glad to hear that a luxuriant growth of hair mav be produced by a very simpie process doscrieed oy uousui oievens in his commercial report on Nlcolaef for the nast voar. which has Just been - T issued, in tne summer oi ioio ousu Stevens's attention was drawn to several . .! o r rs ..1 cases of baldness among bullocks.cows and oxen, and the loss oi manes anu tails among horses. A former servant of the consul, prematurely oaio, wnoso . . i dutv it was to trim lumps, hud a nauit of wiDinir his netroleum-bosmenrod hands in the scanty locks which re mained to him: and after throe months of nractical lamp-trim ming oxporiesc, his dirty habit procured for hipi a much liner head of clossv black hair than ho ever oossossod befora in his recoUeetion. IJ V . . . Struck: by this romarKaoio occurrence, . Consul Stevns tried tho reraetly on two retriovor spaniels, that had become suddenly bald, with wonderful success. His exuerhmce. tlwrafore, Induced him to suuuoet it to tho owuer of several blaolc cattle aad horse affected as above stated, and white it staved tho snroml of th disease anion i? animals in the smi nhods and stables, it effected nuiok and radical cure on the animals attacked. The uetroleum should be o the most refined American quality, ruhlMMl In viirnrmislv and auicklV witll tlie palm of the hand, and applied at intervals of three days six or seven times in all. except in the oase for horses' tails and manes, when more aunlicalions mav be requisite. The world had about bestun to despair o finding a genuine remedy which could be relied upon for restoring hair to a bald hoau. it is true, tiair-uressers anu oar bers usually claim to be in possession o
some Marvelous compound, whioh they
are willing to warrant as sovereign lor that purpose ; but failures are so gobatant that, on the whole, common experience is against .their popularity, and they are tried with any unug out implicit faith in their virtues. What shall be said of petroleum for such purposes? Ths remedy is not expensive, and, therefore, so far as cost is concerned, may be freely used without injury to the poekot. Hut the smell, we fear, would be againBt its common utse. Another method that costs nothing and is, be sides, without the disagrceabln odor of Iietroleum, owes its discovery to Gen. .'leasanton, of Philadelphia. Among iue wonuenui oiieeus oi ouw mini, jiu has found that not the least surprising J is mat oi covering in a snort' time the waste spot on the scalp with a luxuriant crop of the product natural to the soil! If such be a fact, then the barbers and wig-makers are in danger of losing a large part of their occupation. All that appears to be necossary to obtain beneficial results from blue light is to live in a room having a few panos of blue glass in its windows. That is all and nothing more! TheTong-Yeou, a tree which flourishes in China and Cochin-China, produces in large quantities a fruit affording a capsule filled with rich, oil-yielding kernels. The oil possesses a number of remarkable properties. It dries more rapidly than any other known oil. One of its moat notable properties resides in the fact that, simply under the influence of light, the atmosphere being excluded, it becomes solid, ft likewise solidifies when warmed in the air.
