On WtHlncMhty iNight t )mt wek. nehta half down men (?) frnm Orauxa county, attempted to play the vigilance committee dodge, and visited the house of Thomas Evans, in Columbia town ship, ia thi county, tool; him out ot lih bed, put a rope around his neck, and drew him tip to a cross piece in hip smoke house until he was nearly Strangted, when they let him down. and after he bad recovered sufficiently lo talk inked him m regard to some money of Gcorxe Flick's, whiuh h had been ac cused of taking, and for 'which he bad been arretted, taken before a .Justice and irquitted. Evans denied bavin any knowledge of it, but they refused to be lieve him, and following up tha old witchcraft law of Now England, told him ho must acknowledge or they would bailor him again ; putting tbo rope wound his neck again, one of them suggested they had better take him to the woods ; where tliey led him by the rope, in his night clothes, through a large briar patch, laughingly telling him they would warm Ida clothes for him as the thorns lacerated his skin. Arriving at tho woods they drew him up to a limb of a sapling, and let him bang until bo was nearly strangled again, when thev asked about the Flick money again, but he again stoutly denied any knowledge of it. He called one of the men byname, but the man told him ho was mistaken in the name. After giving him ten days to return the money, or leave the settlement, they left him iu the woods While all this was going on, a part of the men were guarding the bouse to keep the women from giving an alarm. Evans thinks W knows all of them, though they were all disguised. The good citizens of Columbia think they are competent to sec the laws enforced themselves, and are indignant lo knew such in outrage should be perpetrated iu their midst, by citizens of a neighborimr countv. OtrThc excitement in regard to who shall be President, is settling into good humor since tho long delay, aud the report of the Committee on counting tho electoral votes, which we publish on our first page, has been made public.
