The richness and variety of American slawg i remarked upon by all Kaelhtk traveler, who, howtivt'r.ndii'lith'nd at home hi tlw) language of high-born people uepnriuree iron, purny piue as ttcqmni and a great as those prevalent with us, althnigh perhaps not m gioss; for it intifet le confessed tin t most of our (dang is coarse and offensive, Ht least in form. Hut the moat remarkable American iHJtuHttrity in regard to slung, or indeed in regard to any new htnirle in luiiiMiMire. is the miiukncss with which it ft adopted, and comw, if not into general use, into general knowledge. : "jrrn: Vftliil IIIUUll 111 to slang may, however, be attributed ahuoet ontiroly to the reporters and cor-1 rtMiiom enta and " iiutkers-un " of our ! newDuauers. a . i wito eaten eagony at any thing new iu phraseology as well 8 in fact, to give a temporary interest to their ephemeral writing llere.for example, ia the word "bulldoze,1 the occasion of our remarks. A man who went on a journey to South America or to Kuropofour months ago would have departed in the depths of deplorable ignorance as to thu very existence of tub! lovely word ; returning now, he would linddt in full possession of the newspapers appearing in correspondence, in reports, in sensation headlines, and oven in leading articles. Although to the manner born, he would b puzzled at the phraseology of the very newspaper which mingled itself with jus earliest recollections and with his bn akfast; for there ho would fined the new word in all possible forma and under all possible modifications : Imlldoae, thu noun, to bulldoze, the verb, bulUfa&HQ, the present participle, bulliloxd, the past participle, and even to the horror of the author of "Words and their Uses," and in spite of him, king bulldozed, "the continuing participle of the passive voice." Such a phenomenon in language is peculiar to the country. But notwithstanding the fears of the purists and the philologers it docs not threaten the hnglish language here, nor is it at all likely to affect it permanently even by the addition of one phrase or word. For our use of slang of this kind is the most fleeting of temporary fashions. Such slang passes rapidly into use and into general recognition, and passes as quickly out again. Uartlctt's "Dictionary of Americanisms" Is full of words of this kind "locofoco," for example which lived three short lives, and then passed not only out of use, but out of memory. While they are in vogue, however, they deform eur speech, and they tend to decrease our habits of looseness in language ; and they bring reproach upon us such as that with an allusion to which we began this item. For oar reputation's sake we should stop this; it subjects us with somo reason to ridicule. Hut we shall not stop, because the men who could stop it the editors will not do so. Very few newspapers in the country only two or three are really edited as to the language used in them; and as to slang of this sort, it is regarded as something pleasant to the ears of the average reader, who is supposed to think it funay, January Galaxy. Winter RailrMding en Pacific. tha Xarlhern Admirable arrangements are in. operation for the handling of trains on the Dakota Division of the Northern Pacific this winter. Heretofore trains have been suspended jon this division during the winter for trie alleged reason that the business of the line would not justify its operation. But this winter at the earnest request of the military authorities the line is being operated. The line was thoroughly snow-fenced, but this precaution was not enough. Every train that goes out is accompanied by a commissary department carrj ing ten days' provisions, together with blankets and other comforts for passengers, should the train become blockaded at any time. Each train is supplied with a snow-plow and an extra engine called a "pusher," and with a force of eight men. In case of storm, or threatened storm, the trains are not allowed to move, and in case they are overtaken by storm they are stopped at once and remain in place until the storm is over, provision having been made through the commissary arrangements for the comfort of passengers. So far no serious difficulties have been encountered, and the train has come through on time except on one or two occasions, but in February and March, when our heavy snow falls come, the commissary arrangements are liable to 1)0 appreciated by travelers on tnis line. Bimwrck Tribune. Anna Dickinson is a failure in the love scenes of her own plays. When the experienced actor sidles up to her and roaches his arm around her rigid waist, she grabs him by the wrist and holds him off at arms length while he says his piece, and then, when she reaches the melting moment, she lowers her head to let it droop upon his shoulder, the constrained action is so like the gesture of a venerable William goat in the actef assisting a teasing boy over a pasture fence, that the audience gleefully look to see the unhappy lover butted clear over into the orchestra fiddles, and there is a general murmur of disappointment when he bracee his feet and receives the drop of her head with a scarcely audible grunt ,Iimk-eyC' The Boston lMMw suggest "Mated and Cremated" as an appropriate head for the "Marriage and uenth" column of the future.

Reports made by exploring parties, consisting of geologists and mineralogists, under the lead of Captain Murray of the Royal Engineer service, who recently journeyed into the unsettled Western part of Newfoundland, furnish most interesting details of the appearance and resources of that section of the island. They frequeatly encountered closely grown forests of stately birch and pine extending many aiiles without an opening between the thicklv matted branches aad foliage. Hay of a wild description had grown to the height of nearly six feet in some instances. The horses seemed to relish it more than the ordinary grasses. The soil upon which this hay grows is said to be chiefly nurtured by the moldering trees. A little island in the Gambo Kiver, a beautiful and partly navigable channel of fresh water, which, according to fome vague tradition, had been believed to be the last remnant of territory inhabited by the original red men, was found to contain no vestige of Indian life. The numberless lakes, gulleys, and rivulets team with trout. Muskrats and otters abound in various quarters of this uninhabited Western coast and give promise of a very lucrative industrv. Here, rabbits, deer, sil ver gray and black foxes were met in numbers. novers, cunews, ana partridges were very abundant. In spite of the fame this country has acquired for fogs and storms, the weather was almost continually dry and salubrious, while the sky at evening exhibited splendors unequaled by the heavens of Italy or the East. Frezen Bits far Hersee Meet. Lot any one who has the care of a horse these cold, frosty mornings deliberately grasp in his hand a piece of iron ; indeed, let him touch to it the Up of his tongue, and then let him thrust the bit into the mouth of his horse, if he has the heart to do it. The horse is an animal of nervous organization. His mouth is formed of delicate glands and tissues. The temperature of the blood is the same as in the human being, ami, as in man, the mouth is the warmest part of the body. Imagine, we repeat, the irritation that would be caused the human, and consider taat.if not to the same degree, still the suffering to the animal is very great. And it is not a momentary pain. Food is eaten with difficulty, and the irritation repeated day after day causes loss of appetite and loss of strength. Many a horse has become worthless from no other cause than this. Before Indiarubber bits were to be had I myself used a bit covered with leather, and on no aooount would have dispensed with it in freezing weather. ifswew HvrH.
