aiense tail, fully 160 feot in length, rose a few inches above the w:iter. This Uil I saw distinctly from its junction with the body to its extremity ; it scorned cylindrical, with a very slight taper, and l cstimatcdiU diameter at four feet. 1 he body and tail wore markml with alternate bands of jaripe, black and pale yiillow.iu color. The stripes were distinct to tbe very extremity of the tail. I can not say whether tho tall termi nated in a fin or not. 1 examined it carefully at the above-mentioned distance, but could not satisfy myself how lift til torminated. The creature pos

sessed no fins or paddles, as far as we could perceive, never having seen any part of its belly. I can not say if it had legs. It is very possible that the creature was much broader ami more massive than the dimensions above given, for the greater part of it was evidently under water, and we never caught a glimpee of any but the extreme upper wart. It xiiueared to me to progress

by means of an undulatory motion of ! the tail inn vertical plnnc. The tail seemed to have an independent motion ; that to to say, a quicker nad a different one from the body. The head would rise slowly and the body become simultaneously lower, and vice versa, The undulations of the tail were brisker and very distinct, and I closely watchod them through good glasses. I had for some womttiits the idea of running the creature down, but I shortly dismissed the intention on account of the danger of breaking the screw-blatiss. The creature showed no sign of fear. I can not even say if it was conscious of our presence. It finally dropped under our stern and passed over to tho port side, somewhat slackening its speed. Some time aflerwards, however, it increased

its paee, and when last seen was on our

port beam, at about one and a half to two miles distance. The creature formed a distant wake, and seemed to exude aa oily matter as he moved. And, acondlv. I. the said James Anderson,

do solemnly and sincrely declare as follows, namulv. that the shano and color

of as much as was distinguishable of

the creature bors an almost exact re semblance to the upper part of a sala
