Antipathy to Cat. Tlie IN'V. S. Iren:riM Prime, tlie wellknown editor of tlie New York Ohaervrr, I'urnUlie-i that aM-r with tlie following remarkable Inntanou of Riitii'iit.iy to tlie feline racv. Inays: Within twenty-live inilf- of CanibrMtfe, X. V., the homo of my youth, the lU v. pr. tc-ldml. It was infirmity of constitution for which he was not reejtonMble. lie vrs by birth an Kujrlihmari ; came to ttiU country with a young l;imily, ami wa tlnully nettled as a jiator in the St te of New 'ork. lle'Vi.H the father of seventeen children, two of whom were clergymen, one u l'reeidentpf a College, one a (lUtin?ui.heil lawyer, and all who grew ui oct-niifd ldaee "of hun f hiiJ ueful-
iie.s. lr. Sprajmu says of him, tha. he whs "one of the h ailing men of his day." He was a man of large frame, gtnut Kng-li-li bullil, etronir eon-titution, full habit, ami corpulent, the very la.t man to be susH'ftel of wcakncM or fool1h notions, or ath-ctations of any kind. His only peculiarity, of w hich I have any knowledge, wa inability to exist in the same immediate atmosphere with a cat. That the disability was real nd not Imaginary, I have the most painful and abundant testimony, and the facts are worth recording as thev establish a physiological point vt preat interest, and it may Ih of value. " Mv lather anil the Dr. were members of the Trcsbytery of Troy, and of the Synod of Albany, and as those eecles-ias-tical lilies fifty years ago extended over a large territory, attendance upon the meeting required long journeys. On these excursions as the lr. and my father were warm friends, my father lieing much the younger, aeted the part of fiJus AchaU. to prevent any collision lietween the I r. and hU nitural enemy tlie euf. Hfort) he was admitted into" a hotel or private houe, my father would inform the tUmilvof the lr.'8 jHt-uliarity of temperament! and every one of the feline folk would Ihj removed or earefullv cloete 1. rutting up together for the night at a rural inn in New Hampshire, my tathrr had taken the precaution to coHsnlt the landlord on the subject, and received the assurance that no cat was on the" premises, the landlord having long Mnce hvirne I that cts were more of a mii-atife. than the miee tlcy were fabled to d -troy. In this 1 urn very much of th same opinion with the New Hampshire landlord, ivver yet having seen a house less iiifested by mice lor tlie presence of a cat. rVititied with tlie assurance, the two elergvmcu took lodging, and after an early Mitii r, l.ing wari-d with their journey, retired to bed in adjoining room. In the d ad of night my ft! her awoke to hear the -cu!i tr cry of the cat, and evidently in the iiad by the diKr of the I'r.'s tiedi-haintier. Leaping from his lwd "aeeoutred as lie was." lie ruhed out into the hall, ar.d the joie o the animal ceased ; but returning to his room and lixlitii'.g his can lie lie pursued the eat down et;iin into a lower room, where he mvlo her a prisoner, lit hojw.l that the Dr. had not heard the cry, but thi iking it prudent to look in iiion him. I.e tj i;ed hl dtor Mi l found him lying w ith his head over the si ! ef tlie lied, the sweat in big drop standing upon his forelieji , and in a f tint voic he aid, " I'm better now." lie was greatly exhausted, but was recovering as from a swoon. At another time the Dr. came to our hou-e. In Cambridge, X. V., and as his -iit as anticipated, the usual preparation had iecn made, t fiat of sending the cat away to one of the neighbor. And a it happened at this time that the cat family was somewhat cnlargtd the kittens were cart fully convey d with the cat to a sate retreat. Dr. entered the room from the hall, and instantly retired to the piazza. Mid there fat down. My mother went out, and, jrreetlm, him. b-d him into the parlor. Again he retired, saying with his usual urbanity. "My dear Madam, you have not considered my infirmity." She assured him that he was for once at Iea-t mistaken, and at her urgent request he returned, but on th threshold again paused, and said he coulu not enter, lie resumed his scut on the Crch, an 1 a m arch was made. Under a d in a room opening out of the parlor, was found a kitten aleep. The atmosphere of the whole apartment must have been no impregnated, that his rtem revolted, and to have remained In It, would in all probability Lave been followed by the most serious cons-quence. This Infirmity, a he himself always used to call it, when it was necessary for him to allude to it, lecame well known in the community where he lived, and it Is fai l that at one time dome mischievous hoys put a cat into the box-seat of his chaise. In which he was going out to ride, and although the animal made no noise, the Dr. soon became sick, and with those peculiar sensation that made known ro him the nearness of his enemy. lie was obliged to return home, and a 'arrh revealed the cause of iXi trouble. I have heard many anecdote-) of the eatim kind respecting the Dr.'s Infirmity, all going to show something in his physical condition so susci jw tible to the cat power, that it felt its presence without the intervention of sight or f "ind. Ir was a subtle but very cttieient jntltit nee flowing from the cat ami pervadc'Z the atmospii, re very widely. Ilow far tU- unfriendly effect extended, or how J'-J it remained in the room after the cat had retired. 1 cannot pretend to say. Xor what catastrophe would have followed it the Ir. had lecn contlned in a room with I"' foe, pecn or unseen, I do not know, hut I presume that he would have died In v ry ghort time. It is an unquestionable fact that the InPrmity was wholly physical, and utterly -Tond the control of the w ill. It was not to any of his friends to great an oc-oa-ion of regret aa to him, the victim and sufl.-rer, and he would have submitted to ny treatment, medical or moral, that promised to eye njm deliverance from t' afflictive bondage. He brought the forces of a vigorous Intellect and sound reason to bear upon it. but In vain, and it continued to be h's misfortune until the close of his honored and useful life. The books furnish similar Instances, inl generally they are attributed to the Inngination. We think that a man might pet over it, if he would, and that U Is very iO)lih to be a slave to such notions. Hut In this case, and doubtless rnanr others, there U no room for the I -? of fancy, and weare compelled to the
admission that some undefined repug nance in the constitution made the Invisible presence of a cat incompatible with the lifo of an able-bodied and strongminded man.
FAKM AMI IIOUSIIHOLI). One hundred parts ot water to one pint of pure carbolic acid, is said to be an excellent wash to rid fowls anil poultry houses of lice and other vermin that infest them. Here Is a recipe for ginger cakes, a kind that will keep u long while. Take two cups td molasses, one und a half cups of lard, two cups of sour milk, or water, one tcaspoonful of soJa, one tea.snoonful of ginger, mix. roll thin, and lay on buttered pans, ami bake quickly. The Uurdewtrt Mmthly says no one who has not tried it can have any idea of the luxurious growth of a cucumber when trained on a stake which tias a set of stubby side branches left along its length ; and the crop on some so trained was enormous. Ily this plan the vines ceupy less ground, and It is the natural habit of the cucumber to climb, instead of trailing on the ground. Sweetmeat jars or bottles can be cleaned without scraping them, by injuring in the jars hot water and ateaspoonful of pearl-ash. The contents w hich remain sticking to the side and bottom of the jar will 1! disingaged by the xarl-ash and float loose in tne water. Wash bottles the same way. or kettles, or any vessels which you wish to purify or cleanse from grease. Strong lye poured off from good hickory allies will answer nearly as well for the same purpose; and for kegs, buckets, and other large cooking utensils, lyo from good ashes may always be used. A writer In the American Bee Journal for several rears has practised the following method of preserving old combs from the depredations of the moth when it is not convenient to melt them up at once, ltv them in the sun until they lceome softened, then roll them up and press them with the hand into hard, round ball. In this condition they may be kept without loss or danger for years. A wholesale honey dealer says honey will not candy if a tablcspoonful of cream tartar dissolved In water lie mixed with a gallon of. honey when scalding hot. Care must Le taken not to scorch the honey. During a late conversation with one of our dealer, he advanced the theory that eggs spoiled beca ie the yellow or volk came in contact with the membrane ictwen the white and shell, and if eggs were turned occasionally they would keep for an hide Unite length of time. He further stated that if a sitting hen did not turn her eggs every few davs, they would Invariably spoil, and fail to 'latch. His theory was, so long as there was a portion of the white or albumen between the yellow and shell, the egg whs practically air tight, but when the yellow came incontact w ith tlie shell it adhered to it, and allowed the access cf air. Journal of the Farm. For pickled cnuliilowrrs, take good white heads, break them into small purees and boil for ten minutes in strong salt and wa'er. Skim out the oieces which should N so tender that a splint of broom corn can be run through the stems. Lay them on a towel to drain oft the water, and when thoroughly cold put them into a pickle Jr, with a few w hole cloves, allspice. jKppcr, and'sticks of cinnamon tied up in a cloth. Koll an 1 skim thoronghly ; then pour it directly over the cauliflowers. It :i few beets are sliced up in the vinegar while boiling, they will color the cauliflower stalks a bright coral red, and make them more attractive to the eye. CWifry (irul Itmnn. A K.imantic Life. The romance cf Senator Houston's life is hardly known to the present generation, and yet it contained enough to furnish material for half a score of novels. His escape from his mother, when, at the ; age or seventeen, lie l. ll madly In love with the Indian maiden Tootooloo (Sun flash), and following her to her home, adopted the habits of the Cherokees, married her, and for three years, nnder the name of Oolooteka, hunted and fished and fought as a young Indian brave and acknowledged chhf; his unexpected return to his ftmilv, grown during his absence, though still wanting six month of his legal majority, to that heroic stature which then, dres.-ed in hunting-shirt, moccasins, blanket and head-gear, and ever afterward, however clothed, made him a man of mark : his abandonment, sixteen years later In life, while Governor of Tennessee, when his early pranks had tx'en forgotten lu his success as a lawyer and triumph as a politician, of his young and accomplished bride the day after marriage ; his resignation of olllce, and w indipg up of business, and settlement of affairs, with the utmost deliberation, gainst the earnest eutreaties of friends, and jeers of foes; his securing by deed all his not inconsiderable property to his mother; his return. as an Indian chief, to the wilderness, reclaiming his native wlf-?, and dwelling three years longer with bis trile;and his sudden departure at last, for Texas, for the purjKse of Ixvoming a herdsman on the prairies all show clearly enough the large element of savagim there was In his character. And yet he was superbly endowed by nature ; was a great soldier, lawyer and statesman; possessed an execitive ability unsurpassed; w hether as Governor or Senator, was the most opular of men; and in polished society was its ornament and deIiXt.
