I adjourned on the knife-

Reaching the haunted bonne tut the shade of evening were falling, we found ; eTen these were not able to lend an air of romance to the place. It was the moat unromanUc, uughostly looking house possible, being, in fact, nothing ' m re nor less than a perky villa, of the kind usually abutting on the main thor- : oughiare of a suburb. Cheater had the kev, and between us we had brought material for a mild symposium. We did not want to give warning to the aborigines of our nocturnal visit, by purchasing articles on the spot, so we brought down everything even candles with us, and we had every reason to believe we entered the house unperceived by anv one. Rrnh" was the first to make an hk siwvtion of the basement, and we did the

containing the ghost of s deceased mouse. It did not take as long; for the villa was not extensive. There were sundry articles of furniture left behind by the lat family who had skedaddled all the heavier movables, in fact. We lighted candles, therefore, in the front parlor, c!tsed the shutters and drew the cur-

We were quite prepared to make a of m ÄQJ namber of for matter of that. Brown, Jones and Robinson, who assumed the humble position of " supers" on this occasion, lighted pipes, and after duly gaining permission, devoted themselves to the unspiritual amusement of , three-penny loo. "Brush'' coiled him- ' self up on the hearth rug, having no Jonbt exercised his invagination so far L t. there was a good fire in front of him. We that is, Tom Chester and myself as the chief actors of the occasion, devoted ourselves to semi-spiritual conversation, so a to keep ourselves en rapport with any ghost who might wish to communicate with us. We had purposely left open the doors of both the front and back parlors communicating with the passage or entrance hall, and also the folding doors letween the two rooms, so that we might hear any noises about the bouse, and also . place no material obstacle in the way of the ghost's entrance, if he thought pr per to pay us his r.-j Of course the stairs creaked, aud the - boards in the door and cupJoar: doors eresked in the usual way, and, as t'.- f did so, drew our eyes ever and anon to the door in expectation of seeing some- i thing. There were noises like things tumbling down in the kitchen, and the equally lucid explanation of rats. e tc. Gradually the Saturday i-rawier. in the cockney village grew quiet, and as the church clock struck twelve. Chester enunciated, in his mot sepnlchral tone, I the words: T c-'W tkr very arise hkag xiaar s night. Whan gTBTryarda tin "I wouldn't continue the quotation," I said ; " it is sugg -stive, to ssy the least.' The trio, tired of their loo, began to bk insufferably bored ; and Brown, or Jones, or Robinson was in the act of making up the following practical remark : " Last up train gone ; we're in for the night now," when how shall I describe what occurred ? The first thing that struck us all simultaneously was the sensation of an intensely cold draught of air so we should have termed it under ordinary circumstances rather, let me say, s violent cold wind, which chilled as all to the marrow, making our fiesh creep and our teeth chatter. Unlike ordinary draft", however, this came with sufficient force to blow wide the door of the back parlor, which had previously stood half, or perhaps threequarters open, with s bang. It was s deep house, though, and the back parlor door was, therefore, quite out in the darkness ; so after a preliminary start, to which ibme of us need have been sshamed to plead guilty, we sat straining our eyes into the gloom to see what was coming next One of the trio very feebly remarked that the ghost must be the spirit of a departed Esquimaux, and had brought the Borth wind with him. It mav safelv be saie! that none of the party was in the least degree frightened i
up to this point. Tom flutter'- reuiark waa to Um purpose : "Somebody has quietly opened a door down stairs, and let in that draft. Well soon fiud out. Hi. ' Brush !' " Xo ned to call "Brush.' He was
w ide awake directly the back door , opened ; but, to our astonishment, instead of rushing at the door, he bolted hastily from it into the extreme oppoait corner of the room where we were aitting, and there sat with his face to the wall, howling with terror. "Why, 'Brush,' old man. what's the matter? At 'em, 'Brush.' pin 'em, gixid dog '." But " Brush " would not stir. This waa not reassuring ; for there was nothing mortal, from a torn cat up to a prizefighter, "Brush' was not ready to "tackle." It certainly startled us. for we all knew the old dog's mettle. Now occurs my great difficulty as a faithful chronicler of my own and the others' experiences. What followed was instantaneous ; but what was it ? Nobody saw anything, and yet everybody was, at the same moment, conscious of something that passed right through the two rooms from the back to the front, and out of the front room into ! the passage. The candle on the table myseH did r.ot feel the actual contact ; but still we knew that something had passed so close to us as to touch us, had the touch been recognizable by the ordinary sense. Finally the door of the front room was thrown wide, just as that of the back room had baWB, after which it closed with a bang, and left us starStill nobody spoke. By commot. -on-sent we all arose, took a candle with us right out into the front garden before we extinguished it, turned our head toward the city, and tacitly agreed to walk home. In plain English, we had leen scared out like the rest. , When we got to the village church we , say that it was not yet a quarter past twelve. Our ghost experience had been if not "delightful." The brief. night in the ghost chamber, properly so called, had been a matter of minates ordv. It was not until we had leen toned by a good spurt on the road that we found our tongues. When we did, however, we agreed, one and aB. that no imaginable form of horror, no apparition, however hideous, could have so knocked us over as that invisible yet palpable presence of something that complete evidence of personality unaccompanied by any of those appeals to sense or sight by which, in onr present condition, and under ordinary circumstances, such personality is proved. Even " Brush," who usually "rampaged" about the roads during anything like a noctural ramble, expressed bis rympsthy by dangling to our heels. It would have been interesting if he could have found tongue to tell us what was the impression made on his senses by a night in a ghost -chamber. I have not the slightest explanation to offer of this circumstance. I can ouly say we are none of ns anxious to sit again ; and Tom Chester has decided not to hire the villa for dark seances. It is a pity, perhaps, to spoil a good ghost story by anything like an anti-climax ; but the practical man who got the key for us never passes any of us on the street without expressing the tenderest regard for onr salubrity, and a fervent hope we will not endanger our health or ' nerves by sitting in a thorough draft." Hess is another proof that dogs have the wer of reasoning : A sagacious canine at Rnmney, N. H, lately pursued a woodchuck, which continually foiled him by running through a drain. When he had played that trick two or three times, the dog gave him a rest in the drain, and trotted over to a neighbor's ami brought another dog, a frequent sharer in his youthful sports. Statu .timer his companion at one end of the drain, he entered the other and stirred up Mr. Woodchuck, who started again for daylight, only to be grabbed by the faithful sentinel. If this isn't reason, what is it ? A Western juvenile, who bears the burden of thirteen long summers on his shoulders with most refreshing conti
deuce, was served with s moderate allow- I of totals, with $160,000,000 ; Pennance of dessert, one day, at the dinner ' "-T'rni come" next, with $89,000,000 ; table; but the quantity was decidedly , n1 Massachusetts next, with $60,211,below his notions of justice or reason, as he evinced with a contemptuous curl of The inhabitants of San Francisco have the lip, and the dry observation to his i paid to the Collector, up to the present

It is intended for the convenience of gentlemen and ladies and West End tradesmen who might find it inconvenient to journey to the city in order to transact their usual , business. H is not, therefore, ordinarily concerned with the large bill trau sac - tions of city commerce, auu in consequence is less bound by strict regulations in dealing with any business of that nature which might accidentally be brought to it. The conspirators must have been aware of this, and they laid their plans for approaching the Bank of England by this weaker portion of its defences. Warren, an American who managed the plot, was in no hurry, aud took care to gain a good footing before he ventured on his ultimate enterprise. He lx haved for some time just like an ordinary customer of good resources. He drew upon his balance and renewed it, but kept it always at a good figure. After a while he deposited some bills. They were good and genuine bills. Still ' he was careful not to be hasty, and he continued his transactions with the bunk ! until he had acquired the reputation of a person engaged in lcgitimateconimerce, and thoroughly trustworthy. At length ' the moment came for the presentation of the forged bills. They were discounted without hesitation, and the authors of the fraud had, to all appearances, .succeeded in safely pocketing alnuit 100,000. All these arrangements were masterpieces of ingenuity and patience, but the bills themselves must have required the greatest amount of labor. In the first place many of the larpe firms upon whom the bills purported to he drawn are in the habit of.usiug a peculiar kind of Per, 'with certain water-marks and printed mutter. All this would have to bo imitated, and as the bills were tlrawn on more than one firm, there must have been several of such imitation. There reraaineil the drawing of the bills und affixing the signatures, and each bill must have requiaed a series of feats in successful forging. Some of the bills were backed by sound acceptors, so that there might easily V as many a.s half a dozen signatures on a single bill. Yet the bills were so perfect that not one of them was questioned on the gronnd of the acceptances not iqniearing genuine, bnt the men who had exerted their skill, foresight and perseverance sufficient to insure the unhesitating acceptauce of the forged bills could not escape one trivial blunder, which revealed the whole plot. They presented two bills in which the date ef acceptance hael Itee-n oinitteeL Inquiry was, of coarse, made of the firm whse acceptance was thus undated, and it was discovered that the bill was neit genuine, and the whole series were then found to be forgeries. How much further the plot migat have been carried it is ' impossible to ssy. The loss to the Bank of England is stated at 180,000. The Roth- 1 schilds are mentioned as one of the firms on which the forged drafts were drawn, bnt no other names are given. DE A TH BY TUM AX. Since the invention of the guillotine aud the garrote, that old -fashioned in- 1 strnrnent of execution, the ax, has fallen into disuse, except upon the melodramatic stage. Recently, however, two criminals were decapitated by the ax in Naples, probably in order to make a distinction lietween their crime , and offenses of ordinary felons. The t criminals in question were women, who had lieen convicted of having delilerately munleresj a large number of helpless infants who had been left in their care.
