THE CREDIT MoBILlER. At the tatting of Judge Poland committee, on the 7th met.. John I. Blair was examined by representative Steveusou. Tbe witness testided that he was an original corporator of tW Sioux City and Iowa Falla and Dubuque railroad, with Pratt Smith, of Dubuque : JoW F. DuncomW. of Fort Dodge, and V. W. Walker, of Cedar Ratad. He detailed the history of building the road, the legislation by Congress renewing the land grant in 1S56 to tbe State, and tW legislation of the State giving the grant to the road, and test tried that not a dollar was expended in procuring such legislation, either before Congress or the State Legislatur. TW witness never eipeuded a cent for blackmail for any one. either a member of Congress or private citizen. There was not a single road across Iowa to-day tWt was worth tW monev it cost to bnild it. The wit ness referred to the list of subscriptions and testified that William B- Allison took ten shares. He paid for his tock and never got a penny for bis service. Tbe firm of Samuel Hooper also had stock. The committee heard tbe testimony of Mr. Hooper: after which Mr. Stevenson undertook to re-examine Speaker Blaine as to his former testimony. During tbe examination, the Speaker, upon being catechized in a manner which seemed improper, characterized Stevenson s conduct as on becoming, and said it was against ccmrnou decency. He added that it could W shown that Stevenson had an animus against him (.Blaine i. Judge Poland requested both to stop the contest. Stevenson wanted to examine the witness in relation to the transactions of Blaine of a private nature but Judge Poland thought the testimony already covered tW points. Oakes Ames waa a large subscriber. J. P. Wilson and Oleum W Scoöeld wer subscribers alao. TW Govern ment need not talk much of band given to I Iowa, a it amounted to nothing- nearly all of it being w jrthless. It reminded him of the Frenchman who bad given away 92.000 before breakfast, and when asked how W made it. replied : I Wve just marked nay gooda up." Laughter. B. F. Ham, Secretary of the Credit MobiWr. and Auditor of the Union Pacific Company in New York, was examined by tW Wilson committee, sitting at Boston, on the 7th int. He stated he bad eearrhed the books for tW coat of the Hoxie; contract on tbe road Wtweeu OmaW and the 100th meridian. It cost 1197t. 41AM. of which 1.994. 769.96 remained unpaid. TW t2.000.OOQ note wa not given on account of this indebtedness, TW cost of I building was 7.806, 183.33 : could not give the cost of the first fifty-eight miles west of the 100th meridian- He knew no adjustment of profits on the fifty-eight miles, but tl. 104.000 were paid on it by the Credit Mobiliar on per cent, interest and the prospective profits. TW Credit MobiWr advanced 723.600. on the Ames contract. No adjustment was ever made to witness' knowledge, and W knew nothing of the cost of the 138 completed miles included in the Ames contract, nor of tbe 58 miles built on tW Hoxie contract. Tbe amount of stock of tW Union Pacific railroad sold during tW execution of tbe Hoxie contract waa t-.00O.ü00. a million and a quarter of which went to tbe Credit MobiWr in Government boo is. Have examined tbe balance sheets presented by Crane yesterday, and find them substantially correct. The Trustees' profits were described as in securities and stock, of which Crane gave the footuigs. and several items were testified to. The summary ia aa follow : Profit n th Am omtract. At the request of Judge Hale, counsel for Mr. Colfax. tW committee directed that Ames W notified to bring hi memorandum book, referred to in his testimony, on his return. TW Wilson committee exanained uo witnesse on tW "t b. Judge ('. T. Sherman, of Ohio, was examine. 1 by the Wusou committee on tW lOtb The witness thought tW pnee allowed under the Ames contract were double what tWy should Wve Wen. At one-half that price tW contractors could Wve made fair profits. TW Hoxie contract was tW one entered into while tue antuen held tW position of Government Ihrector. TW manner in which the road const rnrted under tW Hoxie contract satisfactory. Had not the Credit Mobilier

been formed and taken hold of the road the work sould Wv beeu stopped in silly days. If the Crrda Mtdalier expanded t3U.000.U0u and made I&.000.000 profit they made bo nacre thau fair profit. He did not think that 941.tKi.000 a an ettraragaut price for buildiug iW road. Hie 1'oland commit lee met mi the 10th. but uothuig was done, it is probable that several days will be iccupted in examining tW evidence before further afuxi can be determined. Tbe committee will ask leave to alt during the session of the Senate. A Washington dispauh of the 11th says: Nearly the hole attention of Washington ha

been directed to Judge Poland's eunimittee- j room to-day. Ames, after a dewcieion. pro- , riding tWt uo entries, except in regard to tW i Credit Mobilier. should be niade pubiir. pro- I duccd In memorandum Looks for 1867, 1S6n aad lttStf. TWy were diaries with a page-dale for each day in tbe year. On the, in the proper place, and in entries which all agree were made at the time, were ail tW transactions a ith niemhers exactly as he ha testified to them heretofore. In addition to tbe entries in order of dates there were at the end of tW books a calculation of tbe amounts due each memWr, and of tW payments mad to each. Nothing additional was discovered ex cept au entry in tbe book for 186s of a pay- ; niciit to Mr. Colfax, Jan. 22. of 960.75. Wing interest ou certificates for stock of th Union Pacific road recieved by Mr. Colfax a divi- ! deuds from the Credit Mobilier. Judge Hale, counsel for Mr. Colfax, then began a cross ' examination of Arnes, almost tbe only effect of which was to excite the committee very strongly against Hale and call out several very pointed and sever reprimand from Jndge Poland for the course Hale attempted to pursue. TW cros examination did not destroy tW force of Ames testimony m any material point. Jodge Hale then called Dillon, tbe book-keeper of Ordway, who had Wen called when the 1.200 check was first produced about two weeks ago. to testify that he had not paid the check to Mr. Colfax, and had no remembrance of paying it to any one He testified to-day that his im pression was that W had paid the 1 1,200 check to Mr. Ames. He refused, however, to swear tWt he remembered it. Wt would only say it was his strong impreeaiou. At the evening session Mr. Colfax again denied receiving 1.200. and also deuied receiving the 940. j in te ret-t on certificate which was eutered on Ames' book aa paid to him. He then gave an explanation of the 1.200 bank note deposit : 200 came from hi elep-fatWr. Mr. Matthews aa part of d bt due for piano purchased : 1.000 of it was in a note of that dm. ruination received by mail from a man named N es bit in New York, who wrote to congratulate him ou the nomination to Vice-Presidency and tendered him the money as a compliment. He could not remember the exact date, as the letter had not beeu preserved and Mr. Nesbit was dead and his executors bad not Wen able to find any record of the sum sent. Mr. Matthe we waa eworn. aad recollected the 91.000 btll being received in tbe man and exhibited at tW breakfast table. No date could W fixed other than approximately. The object of fixing the exact date waa that tW explanation, as given, might Wve applied as well to the deposit of about 1.500 made three weeks later. After tbe examination of Mr. Colfax ended. Ames was examined in regard to Butler asking 10.000 from tbe Union ' Pacific railroad aa retaining fee for Mr. Carpenter, of Wisconsin, to help elect bun Senator Ames said Butler did not solicit the money, intimating that Carpenter would be a fnend. and bad a tougue in hie head. Mr. i Bnffington. of the House, waa sworn, and tetilled tWt bei ire Carpenter' election to tW : Senate. Butler told bin (the witness) that friends of Carpenter had sent down Wre to f obtain 10.000 from the Union Pacific to help i elect Carpenter, but that Alley had objected. , Ames testified that he referred the matter to tbe director, and W felt sure tbe money had not been paid. Tbe testimony taken in Philadelphia Wfore Hon. Jeremiah Wilson. Chairman of Investigating Committee No. A exonerates Hon. J. F. Wilson, of Iowa, from all connection with the 10.000 check, as sworn to by tb witness H pence, and shows that the same was paid to Thomas A Scott, and was deposited by Scott in the Guard Bank, of Philakelphia. to his own credit. At tW sittings of the Wilson committee on tbe 12th. 0. J. Dickey, formerly a law partner and tW executor of the late Thaddäus Steven made a statement that Mr. Stevens never had bond or atocka of the Union Pacific road. The Poland committee took no testimony on tW 12th. TW three Credit Mo Other investigations were in session on the 13th. two in ojen and one in secret session. The Senate committee appotnteo to cousioer toe tesiunouc u.eu u7 . - i - i .i . . . 1 t the House committee which inculpated Sena tors, had Senators Logan. Wilson and Harlan before them. Tbe former, not Wring taken the Credit Mobilier stock, said be had nothingto add to his statement made to the House committee. Senator Harlan admitted receiving over 5,000 check at one time, and the same amount at another time from tW Vice-President of the Union Pacific railroad, to aid in hut election as Senator from Iowa. He maintained that this wa needed to pay hotel bills, printing, etc. Senator Wilson detailed again his statement that it waa has wife's money which went into tbe Credit MobiWr stock on Ames' dvice, Wt that a W (Wilson ) had also advised the investment. W was alike legally and morally responsible, and did Bot want to shirk ! nor hesitate to tell the whole story. U insbrted that a soon a W Ward there waa anythiiuT wrong about it, W at once had his wife , j sell the stock, which sW did wit Wat making a cent of profit. TW Wilson committee beard some important evidence on tbe Central Pacific road, while the Poland committee remained in secret ession writing upon their report.
