AiHH-dote of frof. Morse.
The story of the early life and struggle of the late Prof. Sa'ai'l F. B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, are pretty well known. Colonel Slrother, the 'fort Crayon" o the mapaiineM, teil the following story of hit early life: I engaged to become Morse's pupil, and subsequently went to New York and found him in a room in University Place. He had three other pupils, and 1 soon found that our professor hsd very little patronage. I puid my fifty dollars; that settled for one quarter's instruction. Morse was a faithful teacher and took as much interest in our progress more indeed, than we did ourselves. But he was very poor. I remember that when my second quarter's pay was due my remittance Irom home did not come us expected, and one day the Professor came in, and said courteously: 'Well, Sjrother, my boy, how are we oft' for money? "Why, Professor," I answered, "I am sorry to say I have been disapjointed; but 1 expect a remittance next week." "Next week!" he repeated sadly, "I shall be dead by that time." "Dead, sir?" "Yes, dead by starvation." I was distressed and astonished. I said hurriedly "Would ten dollars be of any service to you?" "Ten dollars would save my life; that is all that it would do." I paid the money, all that I had, and we dined together. It was a modest meal, but good, and after we had finished he said "This is my first meal for twenty four hours. Strother, don't be an artist. It means beggary. Your life depends uion people who know nothing of your art, and care nothing for you. A house dog lives better, and the very sensitiveness that stimulates him to work, keeps him alive to suffering." 1 remained with Professor Morse three years, and then we separated. Some years afterwards I net him on Broadway. He was about the same as before, a trifle older and somewhat ruddier. I nsked him how ho was getting along with his painting, and he told me that he had abandoned it; that he had something better, he believed; and told me about his proposed telegraph. I accompanied him to his room, and there found several miles of wire twisted about, and the battery, which he explained to me. Iiis pictures, finished and unfinished, were lying about covered with dust. Shortly afterwards Congress made an appropriation, and Prof. Mors.- was on the high road to wealth and immortality. Lying aud Swearing. Old Pardon S., of Connecticut, was a particular kind of a person. One day he had a man plowing in his field, and he went out to see how the work was going on. I he grouml was very stony, and every time the plow tiuck a stone the man would swear a little. " Look here," cried Parson S., " you musn't swear that way in my field." " Well, I reckon you'd swear too," said the man, "if you had to plow in such a stony field as this." " Not a bit of it," said the parson ; " let me show you." So the parson took hold of the plow, but he very soon had great trouble with the stones. As stone after stone caught the plowshare, the parson ejaculated : " Well, I never caw the like." And this he repeated every time a stone stopped his onward way. When he had plowed "around once he stopped and -aid to the man : " There now ! You see I can plow without swearing." " But 1 guess it's pretty near as bad to lie," said the man, "and you told a doz'n o' lies. Every time the plow struck a stone, you said, 1 I never saw the like,' when the same thing had happenrd the vrv minute before." Combining Piety with Profit. In Keokuk, Iowa, recently, a saloonkeeper was arrested for selling liquor on Sunday. In court he explained that he was a Seventh-Day Baptist, while his his wife belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church. He kept Saturday holy, and she sold beer on that day. On Sunday t-he observed the day and he carried on the business. For the privilege of combining piety with so much profit the enterprising dispenser of the ardent was compelled to pay a small fine, and was then released with the understanding that the partnership with his wife would not legalize the breaking of the Sabbath dav. Adding Poison to Poison. There is no urease in which the blood is not more or les3 impregnated with unwholesome matter, and the direct, inevitable effect of all preparations containing pirituous excitants is to increase the volume of poison in the veins, and thereby aggravate and prolong the malady. Hence it is that dy-pepda, bilious fever, cholera-morbus, lung-complaints, gout, dropsy, rheum itism, nervous disorders, and ca.-es of general and local debility, originally mild in type, are frequently rendered chronic and dangerous by dosing the suitV-rers with the alcoholic bittters advertised as medicine stimulants. As a counterblast to the canard put forth by the proprietors of those pernicious com i mil nils, the plain, honest, philosophical tatementa of Da. Joseph Walkes relative to the nature and effects of his Jalifohhta Yin kah liirTf as, sre doing a world of good. He haa oppued the eyeB of the public to the important fact that a pure vegetable tonic and Iterative, unp Muted by alcohol, if not an absolute specitic for every varhty of disease, "I (be nearest approach to it yet attained. His 'iNfcoAH Bitters are unquestionably working such wonders in affections of the stomach, bowcla, nervous and muscular system, and the 6'anda and respiratory organs. Com. Lord Ciibsterfiild and Col. Aaron Burr, wh o wire noted for their amatory conquests, were both extraordinarily illfavored men.
The Philosopher's Stone Found at Laut.
Manufacturing gold in S.n I rancisco is a good deal like carrying coals to Newcastle. There is a man in that city who virtually claims to have discovered the philosopher's stone, or the art of transmuting the baser metals into gold. It U declared the product of his art has been searchingly tested by the mint assayers und pronounced the genuine article. With proper facilities ne says he can manufacture gold by the ton, and produce a sufficient quantity in a few wcoks to height a ship. We do not observe in the meantime that the discovery has as yet had any perceptible effect in bearing the article in the City of the Golden Gate. M. Dufour has made observations as to the rate of growth of the nails. Here are some of the results : The nails of the little lingers "tow more slowly than those of the other finger and the th unib. The difference in about oneninth. The moan rate of these (excluding the little lingers) is about one millimeter (100th part of an inch) in ten days. The rate of growth od the thumbs is probably greater than that on the six longer fingers. There is little (litlerence between the rates of growth in different Hiiiinals. The nails grow at about the same rate on both hands. The rate of growth is not constant throughout the length of the uail ; it is greater near the base. The rate of growth at the side parts is probably the same as in the middle part. The sub stance of the nail advances eouallv throughout its breadth. The rate of nail growth in an individual at intervals of several years shows sensible differences.
