Death of Gen. Geo. H. Thomas. Major General George H. Thomas, the hero of Mill Spring and Nashville, and commaned of the Department of the Pacific, died suddeutly at San Francisco on Monday last week. General Thomas was born in South

ampton county, Virginia, July 31st. 1816.

He had beguu tne study of law, before

attaining his majority, but obtained a

cadetship at West Point in 1836, graduating four years later, the twelfth in grade in a class of forty-two. After performing duty at various posts, he entered the service in Mexico under Gen. Taylor in July, 1845, with the rank of Lieutenant. He was in the battles of Resaca de la Palma (May 9, 1846), Monterey (Sept.

23 1846) - where he was brevetted Cap

tain for his gallautry and Bueua Vista (Feb. IL 1847), in which he won tbo

warm commendation of his General, and the brevet rauk, then rarely and discriminatingly bestowed, of Major. The command of Gen. Thomas formed the centre of Gen. Sherman's army in the earlier part of his Georgia campaign, aud took part in most of the engage

ments from Chattanooga to Atlanta.
