Thk Bloomington Progress insists (hat it has an «original copy" of the Ulster County Gazette. William Black, an old resident of Cass Coonty, fell dead the other night while eating his sapper. Tans are 585 convicts in the Jeffersonville Penitentiary. Of these 400 are contracted for at an aggregate of $240 per day. Thomas Dole, an employe of the Terre Haute rolling-mills, stabbed Theodore Haggert, on the evening of the 21st, with a file, and fatally injured him. While playing at the Academy in Indianapolis a few nights ago Miss Busan Den in, a well-known actress, fell and sustained serious and probably fatal injuries. Oh the 17th a lad named Charlie Green was knocked down and trampled nearly to death by an excited crowd in a game of foot-ball at the Richmond First Ward Public School. The whip and harness factory of Herschman, McKinzie & Co., at Union City, and an adjoining millinery store, were burned on the night of the 20th. Loss about $15,000. A revival of religion of more than usual intensity prevails at Logansport. Hundreds of converts have been made and all the churches have largely increased their membership. W. H. Reed’s drug-store, at New Coryflon, was burglarized the other morning. The safe was blown open and SI,OOO in currency and several hundred dollars’ worth in notes and other valuables taken. Adolphus Bear, noted for piety and respected as one of Gespaantovm’s best citizens, attempted suicide a tew evenings ago by shooting himself through the head. His injuries were very severe snd probably fatal. The Irish Catholic Benevolent Union of Indiana recently met at Indianapolis and elected the following officers: President, Edward Burns, Indianapolis; Secretary, Lawrence J. Geraghty, Rusliville; Treasurer, John Costello, Anderson. Joseph Wings,, of Liberty Township, Henry County, recently sold a lot of hogs for S7OO and “ deposited” the money in his breeches pocket. That night some one got into his room, abstracted $l4O and left a note saying he would call for the balance some other night.
The following were the postal changes in Indiana during the week ending Nov, 20, 1875: Discontinued—Corn-Stalk, Howard County. Postmasters appointed Big Indian, Cass County, James N. Long; Cartersburg, Hendrick County, A. 8. Grave; Friendswood, Hendrick County, Jackson Jessup; Lamong, Hamilton County, David O. Illyes; Paragon, Morgan County, Mr*. Ann Byran; St. Omer, Decatur County, Israel D. Jewett. The Circuit Court at Greencastle was occupied lately with the case of the State ts. Charles Lemdy for cruelty to animals in overdriving a horse. The evidence showed that defendant drove the horse ninety miles inside of twenty hoars. At the end of the journey the horse fell in the harness and died. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty on the 20th and fined him $lO and costs, amounting altogether to $2lO. At the election in Decatur County last fall there was a very close vote on Auditor, »o close that Frank Weadon and John D. Dobyns each thought he was the one whom the intelligent public wished to honor, and the case was taken to the courts, which decided in favor of the former. The Supreme Court reversed this decision and ordered a new trial. Pending this new trial the parties compromised, and on the 20th Mr Dobyns received his commission. At a meeting of the Republican State Central Committee at Indianapolis on the evening of the 24th the following official call for the Republican State Convention was promulgated:
The Republicans of Indiana are invited to meet in delegate convention in the city of Indianapolia, at the Academy of Music, at ten o'clock on Tuesday. the 22d day of February, 1876. to give expression to their political faith and purposes, and to nominate candidates for Governor, LieutenantGovernor, Secretary. Auditor and Treasurer of State, Attorney-General, four Judges of the Supreme Court. Clerk of the Bupreme Court, Reporter of the Supreme Court and Superintendent of Public Instruction to be chosen on the second Tuesday In October, 1878; also to select delegates to the next National Republican Convention and fifteen Presidential Electors to be chosen on the first Tuesday to November. 1876. Upon the basis adopted by the State Central Committee the representation is fixed at one delegate for each 100 votes and one for each fraction over fifty votes cast in the several counties for W. W. Carry, Secretary of State, at the general election in October, 1872. County committees are requested to call county conventions on Saturday, the sth day of February next, for the purpose of appointing delegates on the above basis, with the view of having a full representation.
