London dispatches of the 96th say the leading Catholics of England had arranged to give Cardinal McCloskey an imposing welcome on his arrival in Great Britain. The British Admiral in the Mediterranean had been instructed to take action relative to the late attacks upon English vessels by Spanish pirates. According to a Montreal'dispatch of the 26th the remains of Guibord will be buried Nor. 18, the sixth anniversary of his death. A New York special of the 26th says a rumor prevails in that city that the members of the secret order of United Irishmen Redivivi of New York had recently held a secret meeting at which Thomas McGeaghan was accused of betraying the secrets of the order, tried, convicted and sentenced to die the death of a traitor. A young daughter of R. A. Hotchkiss, of Burbank, Dakota, was recently fatally burned by the explosion of a kerosene lamp. * The entire business and thickly-settled portion of Virginia City, Nev., was, on the 26th, made desolate, all the hotels, churches, newspaper offices, public buildings, telegraph and express offices, stores and business places and a large number of dwellings being burned. Ten thousand people were rendered homeless. The larger part of the business section of Austin, Miss., was destroyed by fire on the 26th. Loss $50,000. - The statue to Stonewall Jackson, presented to Virginia by a number of English gentlemen, was formally inaugurated at Richmond on the 26th. Fifty thousand strangers were present, and the demonstrations are said to have been imposing. Official returns give the following figares for the Gubernatorial tickets at the late election in California; Irwin, Democrat, 61,609; Phelps, Republican, 31,322; Bidwell, Independent, 29,762; Lovett, Temperance, 366. Irwin’s majority over Phelps is 80,187, and 79 over all. A Columbus dispatch of the 26th gives the vote for Governor and LieutenantGovernor at the recent Ohio election as follows: For Governor: Hayes, 297,813; Allen, 292,264; Odell (Prohibitionist), 2,597. Hayes’ plurality, 5,540; majority, 2,952. Lieutenant-Governor: Young, 297,931; Cary, 287,968; Thompson, 3,680. Young’s plurality, 9,968; majority, 6,833.

News was received on the 26th from the recent election in Oregon indicating the election of Lane (Dem.) to Congress by about 1,200 majority. The German Parliament met on the 27th and listened to a speech from the Emperor, which was'read by the Secretary of State. A Berlin dispatch of the same date says a council of physicians had declared Count von Arnim to be unable to bear the term of imprisonment to which he had been sentenced. The President on the 27th issued his annual proclamation designating Thursday, Nov. 25, as a day of thanksgiving throughout the United States. The Director of the United States Mint gays the fire at Virginia City will result in a decrease of (1,000,000 per month of gold bullion and of $1,500,000 per month of silver for the next four months. Ah earthquake shock was felt at Memphis, Tenn., and in some portions of Mississippi on the 27th. Three of the parties implicated in the late murder of the Italians in Denverhave been arrested. One of them, an Italian, says he played his harp while -five others cut the throats of their victims. P. C. Latrohe (Dem.) was elected Mayor of Baltimore, Md., on the 27th, by 2,731 majority. Dispatches from Virginia City of the 27th estimated the total damage by the fire at from $3,000,000 to $7,000,000. Two men were killed by a falling wall. Immediate relief was needed to relieve the suffering of the homeless and destitute. The school-houses, the only public buildings which escaped the flames, had been converted into lodging places, but they were altogether inadequate. Bread was scarce, but liquor was plenty, and the streets were filled with a drunken mob. The military were protecting the property of the city.

According to a London dispatch of the 28th the number of cases of cattle plague for the quarter ending Oct. 16 was as follows: In Somersetshire, 88,000; Cheshire, 60,000; Dorsetshire, 48,000; Gloucestershire, 44,000; Oxfordshire, 39,000; Warwickshire, 43,000; Norfolk, 31,000; Cumberland, 28,000. There had been over 600,000 cases in Ehgland and Wales. A Madrid dispatch of the 28th says a -rumor prevailed that the Cariist Gen. ! Dorregaray had been shot, by order of -Don Carlos. * The returns to the Agricultural Departt meat for October indicate that the wheat ‘-crop of this year averages 86 per cent, of <Uast year’s production, and in quality averages 14 per cent, below a sound condition. The corn crop this year falls short !iOf that of 1874 about 4 per cent. The ; oats product is 5 per cent, greater than ,1874. The potato crop is extraordinary, both in yield and quality. Tobacco is 2 ‘ per cent above the average. Barley is 87 ? per cent, of last year’s crop, and bucks' wheat not far from the average. ’ A Boston dispatch of the 28th says a report had reached that city that two. ships —the Jewess and the Delia M. Long—and an English craft, name unknown, which Bailed from that port nearly two yews ago and had not been heard from since, had become becalmed near the Auckland Islands and were boarded by the savage inhabitants of that locality and the crews —thirty in number—were captured and takes ashore and eaten, only one mas es-

caping. The survivor, one of the-crew of the Jewess, told the story to a Biddeford (Me.) Captain at a foreign port Joseph LaPage has been indicted for the murder of Josie Langmaid at Pembroke, N. H. ’■“* ‘ John Nolan was convietedof the murder of James H. Noe, a merchant of New York city, on the 27th and sentenced to be hanged on the 10th of December. Benjamin Both and wife, lately arrested at Fulton, 111., on a charge of counterfeiting, were brought before Commissioner Hoyne at Chicago on the 27th and held for trial in the sum of $36,00Q for the man and $15,000 for the woman. The Driggs party, arrested at Centralis on a similar charge, were committed to jail in Springfield in default of hail oi $40,000, to await the action of the Grand Jury. A Virginia City telegram of the 28th says the mines in that place were all right. The damage done to the Ophir shaft was limited to a few feet at the top. The rebuilding of the mining mills and machinery would be commenced at once. A number of firms in the city had resumed business. Relief was being daily forwarded from San Francisco and other places. According to a Vienna special of the 29th ult. it was reported that the Turks had recently murdered sixty Christians near the Dalmatian frontier. Dr. Strousberg, a leading capitalist of Vienna, had failed, with liabilities amounting to 25,000,000 guilden. Bankruptcy proceedings had been commenced against him in Vienna and Berlin, and his arrest had been effected at Moscow.

A Berlin telegram of toe 29th ult. says Archbishop Ledochowski would be exexpelled from Germany as soon as his term of imprisonment had expired. The Carlist Committee in London on toe 29th ult claimed that the Carlist army had achieved an important victory at Lumbier, in Navarre, on toe 23d. London telegrams of the 29th ult an nounce toe failure of Kaltengell & Campbell, merchants of that city, with $2,000,000 liabilities. A daughter had been born to the Duchess of Edinburgh. The Secretary of toe Treasury has directed the retirement and cancellation of $*104,880 United States legal-tenders, being 80 per cent, of toe National Bank circulation issued in September. This makes the amount of outstanding legal-tenders $373,236,244. Hon. Amasa Walker, a distinguished political economist, died at Boston on toe 29th ult, aged seventy-six years. On the 29t0 ult. a man named Small, riding in a wagon near a railroad wharf in Portland, Me., saw two children playing on the track and a train backing down on them. He succeeded in rescuing toe children, but was himself run over by the train and killed. The case of the People vt. Flynn and Wilkie, charged with conspiracy to injure the reputation of Miss Early, of Rockford, 111., is to be tried in Boone County, a change of venue having been taken to that county.

On the 29th ult., at Salt Lake, Utah, Judge Boreman issued an order requiring Brigham Young to pay the sum of $9,500, awarded to Ann Eliza in the divorce suit, or go to jail. Brigham was sick in bed and, refusing to pay, was placed in custody of the Marshal. On the evening of the 29th ult., at Athens, Ohio, three small colored children named Krumsley were left at home alone, and during the absence of their parents the house took fire from the upsetting of a lamp and they were burned to death. According to the Leeds (England) Mercury of the 30th u’.t. the large iron-pro-ducers, Blockow, Vaughan & Co., employing over 10,000 mqn, had given notice to their employes that all work would be suspended Nov. 13. A Cairo (Egypt) telegram of the 30th ult. says that the Egyptian army had entered Abyssinia, the inhabitants offering no resistance. A London telegram of the 81st ult. says the British expedition to punish pirates on the Congo River had been heard from. Many villages had been burned and a large number of natives-killed. The French iron-clad Magenta, the flag ship of the Vice-Admiral commanding at Toulon, caught fire on the 30th ult. and exploded. No lives were lost. The London Timet of the morning of the Ist says that 200 seamen had been drowned in the North Sea during the gales of the preceding three weeks. A Santander (Spain) special of the 31st ult announces the capture of Ordune by Gens. Loma and Quesada. The Secretary of the Treasury has directed the sale of $500,000 in gold coin on each Thursday during the month of November.

The Carleton Woolen Mills, Philadelphia, were destroyed by fire on the morning of the Ist. Loss from $500,000 to SBOO,OOO. Judge Dillon, at Des Moines, has lately decided that there is no penalty under the law for sending vulgar matter on postal-cards through the mails; but that it is the duty of the Postmaster into whose hands such cards come to destroy them. James Otis, Mayor of San Francisco,, died on the 30th ult. An advance in passenger fares has recently been made on railroad lines between the West and East, the rate from Chicago to New York being twenty-two dollars for first-class tickets. Thb constitutional amendment authorizing the taxation of dogs was defeated at the late Ohio election. At an election held in Missouri on the 3(Hh ult, the ww Constitution was adopted.

Thb official canvass of the votes cast at the Nebraska election shows that the new Constitution is carried by nearly 25,600 majority. The clause leaving to the people the power of locating the State capital has 1,500 majority, and that giving the people the power of expressing their preference for United States Senator 18,800 majority. The Democrats elected two District Judges and one District Attorney. All the rest of the officers-elect are Republicans.
