A. Noble Dog.
On Friday, June 25, four boys, the oldest being thirteen years, went out from the foot of East Seventh street in a small boat. After drifting about some time the lads finally concluded to return, and when nearing the dock were run into by a tugboat having in tow a couple of canalboats. The skiff was upset and all the boys thrown into the water. With the exception of one, William Held, they clung to the bottom of their boat, and were soon rescued. Held, however, was thrown some distance from the craft at the time of the collision, and, being unable to swim, was at the point of drowning when a large Newfoundland dog sprang into the water from one of the canal-boats and, catching young Held by the coat-collar, raised his head above water and started to swim ashore. The current was sweeping down with great force, and retarded the noble animal bearing his human freight to such an extent that a sailor thought it necessary to go to his assistance. He accordingly sprang into the river, but before he could render any material assistance found himself well-nigh exhausted and quite as much in need of succor as the boy. At this juncture a rope was thrown the lad, and, catching hold of it, he was safely landed on the deck of one of the boats. The dog now went to the assistance of the sailor, who would undoubtedly have been drowned but for the animal’s assistance. At the time of the collision young Held was struck on the head by a projecting piece of timber, and received a fracture of the skull. He was taken to his home, No. 50 Rivivgton street, where he died the following Sunday evening.— New York Herald.
