One brick building has just been finished, another is in the course of and a portion of the material if on the ground for still another. Truly, Rensselaer is improver Our office at present is on the second floor of what is commonly termed the 1 ‘shanghai’ ’ building. We expeot to be permanently situated within two or three weeks in the rooms now occupied by Mr. Kelly. Daring the Fair, last week, the dust (to uses common expression) was almost thick enough to slice. Rather rough on the white dresses, bnt a blessing to the lemonade Tenera. The White Stockings of Remington, were otct on Thursday of last week, and played a game ofbaseball with the Rensselaer boys. The Whits Stockings were victorious by a score of 14 to 10. Our thanks are due the Secretary of the Prairie Farmers’ Agricultural Association, to be held at Francesville on the 22d, 23d, 24th and 25th of the present month, for a complimentary ticket to the same. As shows hare been rather a scarce article in this locality this season, it is expected that everybody will come out to see Warner A Henderson's Great Combination next Wednesday. A wind mill is among the rumored improvements of the place, to be erected at the well in the corner of the court house yard. This is a needed improvement and should be encouraged by all good citizens. We had the pleasure of meeting our old friend end partner, E. F. Maxwell, on the streets of Remington, last Monday. He is attending the institute st Kentland, this week, and will probably teach school in Newton county this coming winter. Volume 1, No. 1, of the Gopher, a little monthly, published at Medary ville, by John A. Winegarden came to our table last week. Size about 12 x 14. It was sent out to fill a vacancy made by the suspension of the Pulaski Guard. James Spencer, the druggist, at Remington, is our authorized agent to receive subscriptions and receipt for the same.— Persons living in or near Remington will find it more convenient to call at his •tore than to visit this office. A new newspaper has been put in operation lately at Kentland, entitled the People'» Prat, published weekly by J. B. Spotswood and Dempster, editors. Gentlemen, financially we wish you success in the enterprise. • As all who have subscribed for the Republican, did so with the understanding that the subscription price should be paid in advance, it will now be in order for all such who have not alraady paid to give us a call. Single copies of the Republican can bo had at this office for five cents apiece.

Query.
Why don’t eur present efficient County Superintendent decide the appealed case from Keener township on the location of a school-house? Is not six months sufficient time for that purpose, or is it a case of absolute necessity to wait till the election returns are made ? The trustee would liko to know, you know, so he can build before the lumber decays.
Let the Office Seek the Man
Say the “independents,” and yet, every man but ono on their committee of resolutions was a candidate for office and the one who was an exception was an office holder. Besides this out of the fifteen who met at their convention, eight were candidates at the primary election and worked hard to secure the nomination. This is the office seeking the man with a vengance. Flynn & Sjtatzell hive moved to this place for the purpose of renovating feathers.— Will be found on Washington street, one door west of Healy’a shoe shop. Will guarantee satisfaction to all persons who will try the experiment. Price, for renovating a single bed $2.00 if satisfaction is given, if not, the work will be done free of charge. Remember the place, End give them a call at once. It Is coming and no mistake I The Great Museum and Menagerie of Warner & Henderson’s will exhibit in this place, on the 23d instant. You should save your money and go to the show. This is no humbug that travels over the country to swindle honest people, but is supposed to be a firstclass affair. See their mammoth advertisement in another column of this issue, and remember the times and places. They will exhibit at Remington on the 21st, at Kentland on the 22d and at Rensselaer on th# 23d. The names of W. S. Haymond for Congress, and George Majors for State Senator from this district, and George H. Brown for Representative from this district are placed upon tRe Democratic ticket by the Monticello Constitutionalist ; yet, the so-called Independents persist in saying they are not Democrats, but that they are independent of party affiliations. “Our opinion of the situation is, that there are not five hundred voters in jasper county who will deposit ballots for the Ring ticket in October. We confidently expect that, with perhaps one or two exceptions, the whole ticket nominated last Saturday will be defeated.” The above extract we clip from an article in the Union of last week headed “Ring Strength.” Our opinion is, after a c ireful consider ationof the situation, thati here are not three hundred voters in Jasper county who will cast their votes for the so-called “Independent” ticket in the October election; and we, no doubt just as confidently as the Union, expeot that, without a single exception, the whole ticket nominated on the 6th instant will be victorious. Subscribe for the Republican and send it to your friend a year.
The Northwest Indiana Conference while in session at Lafayette, last week, passed a resolution declaring that the Conference would not vote for any one who was not all right on th# temperance question, by a unanimous vote. On the last day of the fair two persons were thrown from their horses while racing. George Catt who baa been working in James Fraser’s blacksmith shop over at Remington, was one of them, and Bud Hawkins, a farmer, from Pine township, Benton county, was the other. Both of them were pretty badly bruised op, but we understand there were no bones broken. As we are young in journalism mid not very old in years, we would raspectfully solicit the aid and assistance of of our friends, by sending ns the items of news, from all parts of the county; and wa can assure you that all such will receive prompt attention, as wa desire to make the Rbtubucan an interesting local paper and one that will be welcomed to every household in Jasper county. Webster's Unabridged Dictionary contains a hundred and fourteen thousand words and throe thousand pictures. Jones says when he came home late the other night, in the space of fifteen minutes his wife applied all the words to him, besides some extra ones and the fire shovel, suggesting to his mind the picture of the duckingstool on the 418th page of the Dictionary. “Farmers are left out in the cold in electing officers.” Three Commissioners—farmers, Auditor — farmer, Treasurer —farmer, Recorder—farmer, Sheriff— farmer, Surveyor—farmer, Assessor—farmer Clerk of Court — a merchant’s clerk. Prosecuting Attorney—a lawyer. » How is that for farmers being left out ? Of thirteen Towuship Trustees, twelve are farmers. Still “the farmers are only used to elect lawyers and doctors to office from which they (the farmers) are excluded.’’ The fact is these are only the specious arguments of the demogogue, and the farmers very well know it. The farmers of Jaspor county are too intelligent a class of citizens to b 9 fed upon such chaff, and would almost to a man feel insulted at the insinuation against their common sense, only that they consider the souroo from which such barefaced whoppers come. Gentleman “independent” office seekers, send the marines to the main-top-sail yard to look in the locker, but dont try to blow chaff in tho farmers eyes. It wont Win.
A little Set—Two.
We are informed by a letter from a friend that a terrible fight occurred in Princeton township, White county, last week. A man by the name of Christy Hammond, a Pennsylvanian, who has performed many wonderful feats, among which arc the following: He claims to have swam up Niagara Falls; twisted a rope with nine live rattle snakes attached to it; whipped twice his weight in wild cat s ; lifted a horse weighing thirteen hundred pounds clear of the ground; whipped ten men at one time ; and believes that if he was six inches taller and built in proportion otherwise, he would be the best man in the world. This man with his wonderful proclivities came in contact with plain Mr* Haynes. Mr. Hammond made use of an iron maul weighing aboattwenty-five lbs, while plain Mr. Haynes used bis plain fists. Mr. Ham. mond finding thwmaul had no effect threw it aside and took up a spade, Mr. Haynes all the while putting mansard roofs over his eyes and causing the clarot to flow freely from the nasal appendage.

0. W. Church is visiting friends in Ohio this week. It wm reported on the streets Tuesday that Cap, Fountain had on acleanahirt. Prof. Corkins has built and moved into a new shop next to Riley & Shepherd’s marble shop. The bricklayers have commenced work on Anglemire’s building and the old stone store will soon have a new top. One of the old landmarks, the first building erected in town, the one where Corkins recently pulled hair and out beards, is being torn down. Svett has purchased it and proposes to get it out of the fire range. The two happiest men in this end of the county are Ben Butler and Charlie Price Well, who blames them for being happy f A nice little girl baby apiece is sufficient cause.
