IHC, community honor Cantor Janice Roger

The community honored Cantor Janice Roger of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation this past weekend at the synagogue for having served IHC and our community for 25 years. The Saturday evening gala began with a havdalah service led by her sons Eddie and Miles Roger. Her husband, Brandon, also presented a special tribute to her. Musical presentations included the melodies of the 65th Street Klezmorim, a cello duet by Polina and Felix Umansky, and a new klezmer piece composed for Cantor Roger by Andy Smith. She also received gifts from the congregation and a special presentation by artist Leah Traugott. Cantor Roger was bom and raised in Chicago. She was graduated with honors from Roosevelt University, earning a bachelor's degree in music history. She continued her education at the School of Sacred *Music of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. She began her tenure as cantor at IHC in 1979. Her duties include bar/bat mitzvah training, teaching in the congregation's religious school and adult education programs, delivering sermons, creating new liturgies for special occasions, and leading four choirs and the 65th Street Klezmorim. Her efforts on behalf of the American Jewish community include service as vice president of the American Conference of Cantors and chair of the National Committee on

Cantorial / Congregational Relations. She has presented workshops at CAJE (Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education) conferences and has reviewed books and recordings for the JPO. She has participated in workshops offered by the Commission on Synagogue Music and the Midwest Regional Biennial. She also has made presentations for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations Small Congregations Committee in West Lafayette and Des Moines. In Indianapolis she has worked with the Interfaith Alliance of Indianapolis, Young Audiences of Indianapolis, the United Way of Central Indiana, and the Christian Theological Seminary. She has sung as a soloist with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and served as guest artist with the Ronen Chamber Ensemble. In 1999 Roger was named a Creative Renewal Fellow of the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
