How to be married for 60 years

By MARIANNE MIRKIN LACOSTE

Who knows anyone married for 60 years? I see a few hands. How do you think people stay married for 60 years? Any ideas? Well, my parents did it, and by living with them and observing them over the years, I got some ideas about how they made this happen. They have been blessed with good health, which really helps, but there were many other very important things as well. Td like to share these with you now. Humor My parents are actually funny people who like to laugh. My mom can be funny, but my dad is really, really funny. Here is one small example of his humor, yet I am sure any of you who know him have other Art Mirkin stories and have laughed at his jokes as well. We once were on a family camping trip in Canada. It was dark when we set up the tent,

so perhaps we did not set it up as well as we should have. In the middle of the night a torrential downpour of rain occurred. Mud was oozing in through the floor of the tent, and drops of rain were showering us from every direction. My dad found every pot and pan we had and put them down under every place he could find the drops

falling.

What could have been a nightmare turned into a really fun event when my father looked at us, as we woke up, and asked, "Anybody for tea?" We laughed and laughed then and still laugh now when we think about it. With his humor, Dad turned around the whole potentially awful situation and made it into great fun. Love and common interests Did you know my parents are really good dancers? Well, they used to dance all the time in the living room when we kids were young. Heck, they

knew the fox trot, the box step, the cha-cha, and all the ballroom dances, and they danced often. 1 loved watching and learning from them, and I could tell it was something they loved to do. They seemed to relax and enjoy one another as they danced. I am sure my love of dance began right at home and my career path was strongly influenced by this experience. 1 ended up getting a bachelor's degree in dance education and then a master's degree in dance/movement therapy because 1 loved dancing and felt its healing power. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for this. Love of separate interests My mom has had a variety of passions in her life. She really is a great cook and used to bake all kinds of things when we were growing up. She used to send us homemade ingberlach and raisin cookies when Continued on page 13
