Rabbi Jonathan Adland installed
By MATTHEW J. SILVER "God won't ask how many clothes you have, but he will ask if you have helped to clothe someone else. God won't ask what your job title is, but he will ask if you performed your job to the best of your abilities. God won't ask the color of your skin, but he will ask the content of your character. God won't ask if the food you ate today tasted good, but he wdll ask if you helped feed someone else." So began Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation's Rabbi Jonathan Adland's welcoming the Sabbath, Dec. 5, on the occasion of his installation by former IHC Rabbi Jonathan Stein. This theme of service to the congregation and to the community at large, rejoicing in the embrace of Shabbat, and reunion of these two revered rabbis at IHC, filled the sanctuary all evening. Adland's wife, Sandy, and son Joshua, a freshman at Brandeis, led the congregation in a beautiful vocal/guitar duet rendition of L'Cha Dodi and sang several times during the service. The two rabbitzen, Susan Stein and Sandy Adland, shared the blessing over the Shabbat candles, and Adland's daughter Rachel, a freshman at Carmel High School, led the Kiddush. In his sermon, Rabbi Stein charged Adland with being God's instrument of shalom in this congregation and in this city, urging him to teach, share his enthusiasm with, challenge, and learn from the members of
IHC. In turn, Stein said, it is the responsibility of the congregation to make sure Adland succeeds as rabbi, help him fulfill his vision, give meaning to his life's work, and together make the world a better place. Adland gratefully thanked the staff of IHC, his former congregation in Lexington, Rabbi
Stein, and especially his family for their continuing support. The sanctuary fairly overflowed with the passion and enthusiasm these two men share for their work, their compassion for the communities they serve, their commitment to the job at hand, and their respect and love for each other.
