Gifts abound at Indy’s Judaica shops

By SHOSHANA HARPER Synagogue gift shops are in full swing for Hanukkah, featuring books, gelt, decorations, hanukkiot, candles, dreidels, and everything under the sun for the holiday. You can also purchase talit, kipot, tefilin, kiddush cups, havdallah sets, mezuzot, jewelry, and other items for the celebration of life-cycle events and holidays throughout the year. I went on a quick tour last week to check out the offerings. All of the shop volunteers were welcoming to me and the two little boys I had in tow. Bookstores/ gift shops have come a long way in their merchandising. One can shop for themselves or for others of all ages for all sorts of gifts throughout the year. (Remember, Hanuk-

kah is a festival that gained importance in this country due to Christmas, which is unfortunately perceived by some as Hanukkah's counterpart holiday. Nothing, of course, could be fu rther from the truth, but I'll save that speech.) If you are looking now for "the season," check out some of the options we have right here in town. The merchandise ranges from traditional to very contemporary. Truly there is something for everyone. The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck Gallery of Judaica is now also on line, so you can shop at home: www.bezgallery.org.
