Obituaries David M. Silver, 88; historian, civic leader
David M. Silver, 88, of Indianapolis, professor emeritus at Butler University and former president of the Board of Public Safety, died Sunday, Nov. 23. Mr. Silver taught history and government at Butler University for 45 years. He retired as vice president of graduate studies and became professor emeritus of history in 1985. He also served as the dean of liberal arts and sciences from 1963 to 1983. Mr. Silver authored the book Lincoln's Supreme Court, which is about the government's ability to set aside constitutional rights during wartime. The book is in its fourth printing. In 1955 he was awarded the J.I. Holcomb Faculty Award by Butler and also received the Butler University Faculty Fellowship. He was appointed president of the Indianapolis Board of Public Safety by Mayor Phillip L. Bayt in 1956 and served for 12 years. While president, he was responsible tor the revamping of the police Civilian Review Board. Mr. Silver was also instru-
mental in supporting legislation to build the walking path at the Indianapolis School for the Blind. He was a member of the board of directors of Jewish Social Services and of the board of directors and former president of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. Mr. Silver was a 1937 graduate of Butler University and received a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Anita Cohen Silver, sons Gregory K. and Terence A. Silver, and three grandchildren. Burial was in Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North. Hanukkah happenings
The first night of Hanukkah is Friday, Dec. 19. Get in the spirit beforehand at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, and Hasten Hebrew Academy events. Celebrate during Hanukkah with Congregation B'nai Torah, Congregation Shaarey Tefilla, and the Yiddish Club at the JCC. Hanukkah at BEZ On Friday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m. there'll be a family Hanukkah service, dinner, and celebration at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, catered by the BEZ Sisterhood. The "juggler" (David Sasso) will be on hand to perform. For more information, call 253-3441. Hanukkah at 1HC Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation will present "Brisket & Boards" on Sunday, Dec. 14.
The evening will begin with "The Great Chanukah Manufacturing Company" from 5-5: 45 p.m. - creative arts and crafts activities for kids of all ages. Dinner will be served at 5: 45 p.m. - brisket, potato latkes, applesauce, green beans, carrot tzimmes, salad, and sufganiot. Bring your menorah to light before dinner; candles will be provided. Immediately following dinner the Not Ready for PC (Purim/Chanukah) Players will present "Guys and Idols." The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 10. Reservations are required by Dec. 8.
