HHAI students to take part in ‘Anne Frank’ at Civic
Indianapolis Civic Theatre has dedicated the 10 a.m. Nov. 13 school matinee performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank" for inclusion in the 2003 Spirit & Place civic festival. The Nov. 13 performance is reserved for IPS Title One students. In addition. Civic Theatre has reserved more than 100 seats for students and teachers from Hasten Hebrew Academy, Holocaust survivors, and war veterans to attend the performance free of charge. HHAI students will describe some Jewish traditions and answer audience questions prior to the play. After the performance there will be an open discussion of the basic tenets of Judaism, and Holocaust survivors and war veterans will describe their experiences. The Civic is presenting "Anne Frank" in its new 1997 stage adaptation by Wendy Kesselman which challenges audiences to reconcile Frank's story and message of hope with the tragedies in modern society. Geared especially toward students, this performance is nonetheless relevant for all
who seek to probe issues of human rights and religious identity. For more information about the Nov. 13 matinee phone 9246770, ext. 206. For tickets to
public performances on Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, phone 317-923-4597 or visit www.civictheatre.org. Tickets are $23 for the main floor and $18 for balcony seating.
A little tale of terror at IRT
"It is a most wonderful, lurid, poisonous little tale," said Oscar Wilde of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw," now playing at Indiana Repertory Theatre. Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, who adapted off-Broadway's "Tuesday with Morrie," the bewitching story has gone through a number of adaptations in film and stage forms. In this new adaptation Hatclner uses two actors and no costume changes to build a spellbinding story which is playful while making the hairs on the back of the neck stand at attention. Set in 1872 on a remote country estate, "The Turn of the Screw" begins as an ambitious young English governess is sent to care for two young children. Her seemingly peaceful assignment becomes suspect
almost immediately as one of her charges is unexplainably expelled from school while the other refuses to talk. She begins to notice sinister figures in the lake and on the tops of towers. The governess tries to piece the story together as each clue leads her in another direction. What ultimately haunts: Is what she's seeing real? Can her impressions be trusted? "The Turn of the Screw" runs through Dec. 13 on the IRT's Upperstage. Tickets may be ordered online at www.indianarep.com or by calling the IRT ticket office at (317) 635-5252. Ticket prices range from $15 to $44, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more. To book a group or a special event, call 317-635-5277, ext. 4876.
