Something for Everyone Concert will celebrate Emil Leyvand’s 80th birthday

By SHOSHANA HARPER A decade ago, hundreds jammed the JCC's Laikin Auditorium to hear Emil Leyvand's 70th birthday concert. His 80th birthday concert on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. promises to be every bit as outstanding. Emil Leyvand, a violin virtuoso, is the former concertmaster of the USSR Symphony Orchestra of Radio and Television. His 80th birthday also marks 60 years of a career that began at a young age in Ukraine. He graduated from Moscow University's School of Music and enjoyed a brilliant career in Russia until 1990 when he immigrated to the United States and settled in Indianapolis. Mr. Leyvand mesmerizes his audience with a violin crafted by his son, Alex Leyvand, a skilled violinist in his own right and a violinmaker. Mr. Leyvand will be accompanied by a string quartet for a repertoire that includes classical, American, and Russian pieces. A reception featuring IndyKlez will precede the concert, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend both the reception and concert, free of charge. For more information call the JCC at 251-9467. Art calendars for 5764 The beautiful Jewish art calendars are out. If you have not received one and would like to, contact 251-5573. My calendar
