Rabbi Marci Bloch

Continued from prev. page involved with college youth and the Hoosier Havurah, hospital and bereavement visitations, writing sermons, and other rabbinic duties. But the main megillah on her plate the instant she sat down at this table (her 1HC desk) July 14 was the annual Rosh Hashanah retreat - planning and coordinating services and workshops for 300 IHC congregants at the GUCI Rosh Hashanah day. She chose the theme Chesbon Hanefesh, "Taking Account of Your Soul." "As Jews we are always supposed to be examining ourselves and looking inward, redefining our relationship with those around us, especially during these 10 days of forgiveness and tshuvah [repentance], to help make the world a better place." In addition to the traditional high holy day and tashlich services, the day included a variety of traditional activities, including Torah study, social action, and Jewish accountability discussion groups, as well as non-tra-ditional yoga and drumming circle workshops which focused on meditation and Israeli dancing and singing. Members of the congrega-

tion as well as outside providers were lined up to lead the workshops. One of the highlights, especially for children, was "Sweets for the Soul," the baking of 600 cookies and subsequent distribution to different organizations in Indianapolis as a New Year greeting. Whether she continues as a congregational rabbi or pursues another rabbinical path, Bloch's goal remains the

same: "I want to help others embrace Judaism in order to experience the beauty and wonders and ultimate fulfillment that our heritage provides." Welcome to Indianapolis, Rabbi Bloch. We sincerely hope the energy you expend is returned by the community you serve. Matthew Silver welcomes comments at: [email protected].

Greg Garrison to be honored by State of Israel Bonds

INDIANAPOLIS—Greg Garrison, the popular syndicated radio talk show host, will be the honoree at this year's Indiana-Israel Dinner of State, announced Douglas Rose, Israel Bonds general chairman for Indiana. Garrison will receive the prestigious Jerusalem Medal in recognition of his steadfast support of the State of Israel. The dinner will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 5:30 p.m. at the Laikin Auditorium of the Arthur M. Click Jewish Community Center. Proceeds from bond sales at the dinner will be used to build and maintain Israel's infrastructure, including new roads, railways, ports, and desalination plants. In addition to hosting his radio show, Garrison is a prominent attorney, former prosecutor, and author. Last year he spent a week in Israel, broadcasting live from Jerusalem back to Indiana. He interviewed government officials including Ehud Olmert, Natan Sharansky, and Bibi Netanyahu, as well other Israeli personalities such as Jerusalem Post publisher Tom

Rose. Since his return he speaks frequently with Israeli leaders in an effort to bring the people of Indiana up to date as events unfold in Israel. "Greg's proIsrael point of view helps balance some of the negative spin that much of the media has toward Israel," said Michael Papo, executive vice president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, who traveled to Israel with Garrison.
