Something for Everyone Bereavement support group begins Oct. 7 at IHC
By SHOSHANA HARPER To better serv e the Jewish community, <i bereavement support group will be held at the Indianapolis I lebrew Congregation under the continued supervision of St. Vincent Hospice. The program will utilize trained hospice bereavement volunteers who are Jewish. The program originally was open to a small Jewish population. After several successful groups in the last three years, St. Vincent Hospice is offering this opportunity to the greater Jewish community. There is no charge, but you must register for the group. Registration began Aug. 26. Weekly meetings vv ill take place at IHC beginning Oct. 7 and going through Nov. 11 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tor more information or to register call 338-4040. Art calendars for 5764 The beautiful Jewish art calendars are out. It you have not received one and would like to, contact 251-5573. My calendar is always prominently displayed in the kitchen to keep track of secular and Jewish activities. At a quick glance I can also learn a
thing or two about a given Jewish month or holiday. They are a gift of Tubavitch of Indiana. High Holiday services If you are looking for a place to go for the High Holidays, contact the synagogue you are interested in attending. Please know that there is a place for everyone. Some organizations may have a "full house" with their own membership, while others make certain to have an open policy so all can be accommodated. Hebrew High School The Bureau of Jewish Education offers a program for students in grades 7 through 10. Children learn Hebrew and earn a scholarship to Israel! The program includes Israeli studies on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. and Hebrew language on Sundays from 9-10:30 a.m. beginning Sunday, Sept. 21. The cost is $300 per year. K-5 overnight lock-ins The first overnight of the year is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, from 6:30 p.m. until Sunday, Oct. 5, at 8 a.m. K-5-graders can enjoy over-
nights at the JCC, including swimming, sports, games, movies, contests, and plenty of food (dinner, snacks, and breakfast) for $30 if paid on or before Oct. 1 ($35 after that date for members). The non-mem-ber cost is $40 before Oct. 1 and $45 after. Be sure to bring sleeping bags and swimming attire. Tuture lock-in dates include Nov. 8 (Bouncing lock-in); Dec. 13 (Mystery lock-in), and Dec. 31 (New Year's Eve Party lock-in). Call Aaron Atlas at 2514467, ext 283, for more info. Pizza in the hut A celebration of Sukkot will take place at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 4:30 p.m. Enjoy a kosher pizza dinner and activities - arts and crafts and Jewish music. Emil Leyvand honored Enjoy a classical string quartet concert on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in the JCC Laikin Auditorium. What a wonderful tribute for an 80th birthday! Tor 60 years Emil Leyvand worked as a professional musician. He served as the concertmaster of the USSR Symphony Orchestra of Radio and Television, and since his arrival to Indianapolis in 1990 he has contributed much to our community with his many volunteer performances. torium. Scheduled is a political debate, the tentative topic being "How does the Legislature deal with economic issues when there's a budget crunch?" The cost is $10 and includes dinner. The artist employs a mixed media to present a visual interpretation of social and political predicaments. Rothenberg exhibition "Fire & Water" is the title of the art exhibit featuring the husband and wife team of Joani and Jeff Rothenberg scheduled from Oct. 15 through Nov. 15 at the JCC. Many in the community are familiar with Joani's designs on clothing and most recently as the creative illustrator of author Rabbi Sandy Sasso's books. Jeff is a physician and an artist in his own right. His works of glass are beautiful and functional. I have had the pleasure of watching him work with glass at the Art Center as he transforms a blob of glass into a fabulous bowl. Take some time to enjoy the exhibit. Mayoral debate It's time to get more information on mayoral candidates Bart Peterson and Greg Jordan. The debate will be moderated by Jim Sheila, WISH-TV host of "Indiana Week in Review'" on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Laikin Auditorium of the Jewish Community Center.
